AlainPP did it again. Another review for an album, not the single:
Also, not sure I understand this review at all...but that might just be me. Edited by Tasartir - May 15 2023 at 08:25 |

Bingo! For sure. AlainPP sprints down a poetic, stream of consciousness path. Not the most efficient review technique. However, his style resonates with me.

^ I think the alainPP account is handled by several people, because at times his English is poor, other times it's perfect. Weird...

He (alainPP) did it again...
This review seems to be rather for the studio album not the single... http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=2921789 Edited by Tuzvihar - May 05 2023 at 12:02 |

There's a review on the front page at the moment which appears to be a review of Hergest Ridge, but the heading is Tubular Bells and the accompanying picture is a single "Froggy Went A Courting" by Mike Oldfield. Incidentally this is by the same reviewer who a few weeks ago posted a review of Mirage by Camel under the heading of a DVD by Camel. alainpp is the name of the reviewer and in addition his reviews don't seem to make grammatical sense, I wonder if English isn't his first language?

Probably. I guess it's just me, I have a problem with reviews created way ahead of an album's release.

If he is writing for a label or similar, writing a review weeks in advance would make little sense. They want the review published as near to the release date as possible. I am holding back a couple myself for that very reason.

Mystery's new album will be release mid-May, yet there is a review already (https://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=2919553). I'm starting to believe that user (alainPP) promotes and writes for either labels/artists or magazine/webzine and the like. I also believe it's an user acount that is handled by several people. For example, alainPP suggests bands with poor English, yet there are perfectly written reviews by the same alainPP. Just saying... weird.

You are right, thank you! The other problem is the average rating. I have two ratings, one 3 and one 5. The normal average is 4 but the site rating is 3,10...😜

I know how it feels. Someone keeps rating every one of my albums 1 star without even adding a review. Because, my albums have very few ratings and even less reviews, those 1 star bombs have a significant effect on the average rating. The only solution is to just take it easy, roll with it and not take the star/numeric ratings on some niche website too seriously.

Hello.
I am Antonis from Forbidden Myth. http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=12176 rdtprog had reviewed my album and gave it 4/5. I thanked him. Some days later he changed his review to 3/5. I was send him a message that this was not a serious decision and he never replied to me... I have no problem to accept a bad critic but if someone change his critic, it is not a good thing. Listen the album carefully and write anything you want. It was just disappointing...

Nickie gave me permission to repost her reviews which she makes on Bandcamp for music she buys.
She is a most wonderful person and you can meet her in discord chat for ProgRock.com. Look - that may have been your point - but consider this. This was not a bulk load of data. Zap carefully posted each and every one of his reviews by finding his original review, looking up the album in Proggnosis and then then republishing his review. 394 of them! One at a time! "Do not look a gift horse in the mouth" goes the phrase. So while in the past 23 years my labor of love, Proggnosis, has had it's share of disparaging comments in the past - it takes what I perceive as an unfair attack on someone who gives to us for free - to get me to respond. Or perhaps I should say "perceived". If your intent was benign, then please accept my apology for an over reaction. It not, then shame on you. I love this site (ProgArchives). Whereas we have created a better search site at Proggnosis (I am the programmer so I will take my bows here) ProgArchives has created the greater community and has had a larger influence on the Prog loving world. I(f you go to a release page on Proggnosis and click an a member name in the credits, Proggnosis will show you our complete discography. it is not complete of course but outside of Discogs and perhaps Encyclopedia Metalum, I think this feature is unmatched among prog/fusion resources and I am so proud of the javascript tricks I created to make this work.) Anyway - we all do our parts with the resources we have and together, the two sites give to progressive music lovers something beyond anything that existed 20+ years ago when GEPR and Tommy's Forest and Ground and Sky and Progressive World were all we had. BTW - if you like Nickie's reviews - our advanced search makes them easy to find: OPEN the advance search bar, select "list for reviews by" and there you can retrieve a list of all of Nikkie's 61 reviews (and counting).... That was exactly my point. I visit Proggnosis routinely, mostly to see the latest releases and reviews. According to the internet Way Back Machine, prior to being flooded by Zap, the site included a couple dozen reviews by Nickie Harte Kelly, several by Marc and dbSilver, and other reviews by mikeL, Giantvital, Jean, Bert1958, and Rob. I especially like to read Nickie's reviews because she often reviews band I like. But they all got wiped out overnight when Zap flooded the site with his own reviews. How is that fair to those other reviewers? They, like Zap, worked hard to write their reviews, and had every expectation that people who routinely visit the site would take notice of, read, and appreciate their latest contributions? It's great that Zap contributes and I have nothing against him for doing so, but he could have submitted a few at a time, spaced out over days or weeks, so other reviewers whose inputs were queued in the "Latest 50" didn't get bumped out.

^ Still, PDB's points are well-taken. Especially if they don't have a problem with it.

I think the poster was simply referring to the reviewer flooding the site all at once and considered Proggnosis to be suffering the same issue. The "inconsiderate" comment referred to Zap, not your site.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Yes, this is the same Zap Niles. A really cool person, great DJ and excellent reviewer.
BTW, I enjoy your show very much when I can catch it. Keep it up! |
