I can live without those perks. Though the Prog Illuminati's Scaramouchie mask orgies sounded promising, turns out it's mostly just you guys that show up. Anyway, thanks for taking care of that Greg. Edited by Tapfret - February 19 2023 at 21:31 |

All Traps on Earth "...stayed under my (the reviewer's) radar for AT LEAST 40 years..." by using that old trick of not existing for 30 of that and not releasing an album for 5 more.
Reviewer goes on to point out the lack of freshness, "...especially when the synths presets are heavily switched to saxophone". Even the reviewer has to be amazed at the keyboard preset that gives birth to the actual living, breathing form of saxophonist Fred Lindborg. Everyone has their own tastes, but come on. If you're going to write a review, at least spend 90 seconds to research the artist/album you are writing about. This reviewer also led his review of the latest Zopp album with a parenthetical suggestion that Ryan Stevenson may be AI. Edited by Tapfret - March 01 2023 at 19:23 |

^ personally i think the time has come to up the criteria for
reviews on this site. These kinds of reviews lack any sort of
professionalism and are downright idiotic. Personally i think these
reviews should be.... terminated. |

^ Maybe, but reviews were never meant to be 'professional', that was kinda the point. |

^Maybe professional isn't the right word. Competent?
The opinion portion of the reviews are open to whatever claims people want to make about the quality of content. But facts is facts and ahould be accurate when included in a review. |

Some reviewers are AI , they have a "chip" on their shoulder

I miss those reviews from many years ago that were transformed using Google Translate (or was that called Babel something or other back then?). They were some of the most amusing reviews I've read on this site.

PA should have done what metalstorm does with user reviews: they are pending for approval, if the mods think the review is ok, then it gets published on the site.

My first thought is this would require more unpaid labor. Then again, what's the old saying? "Ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure", or something along those lines. |

This is what they are doing right. For example they got a rating abuse problem, much worse than PA ever had.

I agree. I thought I was the only one. I did not realize the same reviewer posted the Zopp and Traps' reviews. Figures....I thought both reviews were fraudulent.

Apparently TELEFUNK is in Belgium, really!, and references The Restaurant at the End of the Universe as location despite, or more likely because of, Belgium, according to the Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy being a very vulgar word, but awardable for most gratuitous use in media.
I read those reviews before being reported, and my immediate impression was that the person is a bit of a joker. I often like a bit of humour of the absurd variety in reviews, and personality, but it doesn't always come off, humour is very subjective, and can confuse others. The person/AI comment is rather unkind perhaps, but indicative of a lack of creativity and doing things by numbers -- 1s and 0s particularly. The 40 years comment in All Traps in Earth could refer to his age (I don't know if English is the first language in, and please excuse my French, Belgium or not), although I read it as indicating that this music is nothing new, retro, and music like this was being created 40 years ago. A little joke that doesn't quite work. "I can't see much freshness here, especially when the synths presets are heavily switched to saxophone" I didn't take literally. I think it was more of an issue when it was on the front page as default, and now its more one of many reviews. It would be a lazy reader to base their impressions on one review, which shows biases, and I know that I like to look at the info on musicians and what they played and year of release... I could PM him, but I'd rather just keep an eye on him at this time. Maybe someone who takes issue might like to drop comments on his reviews. I have tried to do that before but then realised I needed to log in to Facebook to post, and I don't use Facebook. As for more professional or competent reviews. This is a site of amateur writers, where high quality does happen, but I think we should be flexible. I don't like the idea of having to check every review before it is published. Partially because that is lot of unpaid work, I'm sure there are those who would be willing to do it although we have a smaller dedicated userbase to draw from now than years ago, but also because it can be off-putting and intimidating to new writers, and lead to more cliquiness perhaps.. I personally would like this site to be on the more embracing and less censoring side. If the reviews are regularly reviewed by staff and mostly approved in a very timely manner, it wouldn't be so bad. I was writing things years ago for a short films site, and it took days for approval to come often even though I knew there was nothing really concerning with what I wrote. That was a total turn-off for me. I don't want to feel like I'm being graded with my writing or like BB is always watching and evaluating me. Just my two cents. ^ maybe we could have a celebrity death match on PA where we all vote which reviews get deleted and figuratively tarred and feathered
That’s sounds fun! |

I liken seeing one of their new reviews to coming upon a horrible car crash on the road, wherein one is unable to tear the eyes away from the destruction and tragedy. You are free to call this a rant if you wish, but such reviews, and others recently, are in such contrast to the many, many other great contributors here, who attempt to be fair in describing their impressions - how they arrive at their ratings, whether 1-2 or 4-5 stars. These folks have helped me tremendously in my own musical journey. I at least know when to drive on by certain reviews/reviewers. Edited by woundedpig - March 05 2023 at 17:51 |

^ I hid the first post, but good advice for next time (may be try editing that post above). I used to get code (SQL injection) due to my security software. It's a particular problem for me if copy-pasting, with quoting and editing my posts. I imagine things like MrSkin, fleshlight etc. are there because they are part of a list that is blocked. If you have visited those sites, or similar ones, then I suggest a deep scan in case you have malware (good idea anyway if you haven't). I get unwanted code if I have the WYSIWYG post editor enabled. To change that click on Member Control Panel, then Forum Preferences, then no to the editor. And clear your cookies and browser history.
Speaking of the negative reviews and Haken, I see proghaven's one star Haken review (not an album I've heard as I didn't like the earlier Haken album I tried) and it certainly has generated quite the response (well, three) in the social review comments. https://www.progarchives.com/review.asp?id=2895921#social-comments I can't speak to the veracity of him being a Dream Theater troll without some research as is being claimed by one person. He has rated 16 DT albums at PA from five stars to one, don't know about his activity elsewhere (only other music site I check ratings and stuff on is rateyourmusic and he's not posted there on this), but that looks quite fair to me. The review is critical, and not very informative, but I think it's passable. We have had complaints that too many people rating over three, and I am happy to see some balance. I think it understandable that ratings tend to skew I as it is normal to prefer to listen all the way through and review those albums that they really like. Those that rate lost one stars, especially lots by artists, I don't tend to trust. Maybe a sibling had them or a friend and so they were exposed to them that way, but it's strange how so many seem to act like masochists. I doesn't matter much to me if a review is critical or praising of albums that I care about, but I do prefer informative or at least thoughtful reviews that ideally offer some insight and info into the albums (and I like to hear about similar music in reviews) be you a lover or a hater of it. I at least want to feel reasonably confident that the reviewer actually gave the album a proper listen all the way through, and I know it far too often has happened that people have not. I do think some, don't directing this at the poster above, get too annoyed by negative reviews of what they like. What can help is finding those reviewers who seem to speak your language (figuratively-speaking) in that they share similar perspectives, but I do like variety. The negative ones don't bother me if there are other ones to find to counter-balance it. The fanboy/girl type I tend to find annoying (or comedic). Some of the negative ones can be quite funny. Quite a few of the reviews would be better as forum posts. I enjoy reading a variety of styles of reviews generally with a variety of attitudes. It's pretty easy to spot the uninformative, or ignorant and hyperbiased, ones often and move on to the next, I find, usually. |

Posted this review on the page of the single instead of the album. Don't see a way to delete it - sorry, and thank you for removing it for me! https://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=2902099
