I’m really digging Weather Report with the “Heavy Weather” album. I think it is the best Jazz fusion album I’ve ever heard.
Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣

Let me suggest some of my favorite American bands!

  • Spyro Gyra
  • Kick the Cat (from Chicago!)
  • Pat Metheny Group
  • Dixie Dregs (often overlooked)
  • Return to Forever and their offspring!
  • Fareed Haque Group and his many projects i.e. Garaj Mahal

But is it Jazz-Rock? - Even it doesn't have to matter that much. Smile

I've been very fond of some Jazz-Rock albums from about the very beginning of my digging music in the first half of the '70s,
and most notably Birds of Fire, RtF's Where Have I Known...and Osibisa. But it was not until the '00s that I became interested
in Jazz-Rock from many different countries around the world which I in return have had very much pleasure of ever since. Tongue

Excellent!  Sounds as if we have walked the same path!   Of course, RtF led to my lifelong appreciation & love for the music by Al Dimeola, Stanley Clarke etc.

Here's a taste of Chicagoland's own Fareed Haque playing some M. Orchestra with the California Guitar Trio! Fareed turns on the burners about 2:40!

Yeah David. You may have a point. I think it may just be straight Jazz fusion. Very very accessible Jazz fusion.

There is only really one and that is Weather Report. Heavy Weather is a masterpiece of an album, same with Mysterious Traveller and Black Market. It is honestly a shame how underrated they are on the archives, they are on the same pedestal as bands like Santana and Mahavishnu Orchestra for me.

Quote Thumbs Up  and preferably only Jazz-Rock, I've planned another thread for Jazz Fusion.
What???? Jazz Rock and Jazz Fusion are not the same thing? I'm confused.

Overall, how do you all look at Jazz Rock? Doo you all see it as a strict subcategory of Jazz Fusion. Or is there Jazz Rock, that isn't Jazz Fusion. Like, where do you place a band like Steely Dan?

Some very good questions. Thumbs Up

I see Jazz-Rock and Jazz Fusion as two different categories, Jazz-Rock being more Rock-influenced while Jazz Fusion mostly Jazz-influenced, and also to higher degree having influences from other genres than Rock.

Then I distinguish between Progressive Jazz-Rock and non-Progressive Jazz-Rock, the latter one being less complex/experimental, like Steely Dan.

I forgot a couple of artists from the States:

  • Shawn Lane - amazing talent, a life cut short by severe health problems!
  • Mahavishnu Orchestra - I tended to think of this band as British, but I'm told it is properly US!
  • Jeff Berlin - another amazing talent, who played with many of the greats!
  • Happy the Man
  • Jaco - sad ending to a great talent!
I tend to think of blazing guitar-driven fusion as Jazz Rock, but there may be others that qualify, such as Paul Winter Consort, Oregon (the band) etc.

I have hundreds of Jazz-Rock favourites, but I can't think of any Jazz Fusion I really like, not unless you count Jan Hammer as Jazz Fusion. Wink
