Inspired by Paul's two around-the-world threads, here's a third one, and my fave bands from East to West are: Stomu Yamash'ta (Japan) Jukka Tolonen, Wigwam (Finland) Made in Sweden (Sweden) Burnin' Red Ivanhoe, Secret Oyster (Denmark) Embryo, Out of Focus (Germany) Fermata (Slovakia) Korni Grupa (Serbia) Accordo Dei Contrari (Italy) Jean-Luc Ponty (France) Iman Kalifato Independiente (Spain) Osibisa (Africa) Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Santana (USA) If quite to follow PA's classification, I had listed Iconoclasta (Mexico) as well, but I consider them more to be Symphonic than Jazz-Rock. Enjoy it!

I'll have to get back to you on this one, but I can tell you that Secret Oyster (Denmark) and Out of Focus (Germany) will be on my list too if I'm choosing one favourite Jazz Rock/Fusion band from each of ten countries.

Nice list from Grumpy.
Overall, how do you all look at Jazz Rock? Doo you all see it as a strict subcategory of Jazz Fusion. Or is there Jazz Rock, that isn't Jazz Fusion. Like, where do you place a band like Steely Dan? |

Thanks for clearing up the Con-Fusion. I'd be hard-pressed to name any Jazz Fusion artists I like, but I'm a big fan of Jazz Rock.

Mostly only the big names but the only band I play regularly is Colosseum 11. Electric Savage and War Dance is pretty much all I need from this.
Recently started enjoying the Norwegian band Krokofant

Some very good questions. ![]() I see Jazz-Rock and Jazz Fusion as two different categories, Jazz-Rock being more Rock-influenced while Jazz Fusion mostly Jazz-influenced, and also to higher degree having influences from other genres than Rock. Then I distinguish between Progressive Jazz-Rock and non-Progressive Jazz-Rock, the latter one being less complex/experimental, like Steely Dan.

Hi, Nice to see some ECM listed here, and if we look at their listing of albums we probably could add a lot more!!!!!. Terje is the "odd one" here in that what he does is not exactly jazz-rock, but then it is not rock either, or jazz in a lot of the stuff he does. As an example, the odd one out, EOS is an example of Chamber Music with an electric guitar and electric bass and effects and the album is more ... about classical chamber music, than it is anything else ... (make sure to skip the first cut!!!). Jan Garbarek is more pure jazz, but when you hear him with Gismonti and Haden, the story is very different. I like his experimental period in EVENTYR ... which is an incredible album, and many other things, and the trio's MAGICO is a very beautiful album, that defies jazz or rock ... it's just excellent music all around. Egberto Gismonti deserves to be listed. I was thinking SANFONA is valuable here, but I wonder if people get lost when they hear the piano excursions, which I find outstanding. Of his albums, I prefer NO CAIPIRA, which is a sort of psychedelia meets Villa Lobos, meets Samba, meets Brazil, and meets heaven knows what ... it's way out there and the combination with the orchestra is just sick ... totally sick in its design and beauty. I often think it's pure Brazilian music, but I'm not sure that even fits ... On the topic of Brazil ... Milton Nascimento was mostly jazz-rock, Moacir Santos I have not heard enough of as yet to say much, Airto Moreira was jazz-rock, although when it was around, I'm not sure that many could handle the Brazilian rhythm touch with the jazz-rock ... this was the case with a jazz guy at our local station that liked Airto (the one famous piece) but disliked the rest because it wasn't jazz enough! The kind of comment that makes you groan, right? Some Japanese? Like Bondage Fruit? When I saw them in SF in 1999, I thought of this as Japanese jazz with a touch of rock, but (honestly) I have not listened to them since!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

But frankly speaking, Paul, I miss here listing albums, and I don't feel quite well with talking about "my fave bands" when I'm mostly just fond of one album from each of those bands/artists. ![]() |

Bondage Fruit are a great band, I tend to place them in the Japanese Zeuhl arena with the likes of Koenjihyakkei, Happy Family, Amygdala, Le Silo, etc.
