The real tragedy is that the poll has turned from a comfortable majority for 'Not Usually' to being overtaken by 'Most of the Time'  !

It is hardly surprising because of the way the poll was presented. The title is already full of negative connotations, and when I first saw it, before I even opened it, I was wary. The way the poll options are offered reflects the negative bias. The addition of information in parentheses is unhelpful, and makes it easier to choose the negative options than the positive ones. I very rarely avoid ANY kind of music, so “Almost Never” would be the response that is most true for me - but, the parenthetical addition does not apply to me, so I voted “Other” instead.

Although the “What’s prog-metal?” option was presumably put in as a joke, it actually seems a valid reflection of many who have voted for other options, by their comments. In fact, reading through this thread (ignoring the derailing), that option should be a contender for leading the poll! 😄🤪

A lot of this could have been mitigated, had the OP attempted to say what they meant by prog metal. Without a point of reference (and I’m not saying it has to be “right” or “agreed upon”, so much as there - otherwise everyone is voting based on their own idea of what prog metal is, and these can be wildly different. From my point of view it was a good idea for a poll, but poorly designed. To his credit, the poll creator has acknowledged this, and that it could have been been worded differently.

^ Lighten up.  I was being sarcastic.   It's just a poll about metal.  No one cares.

😄

I apologise. Sarcasm is hard to discern sometimes, without hearing the tone of voice.

It's okay.   It is a challenge, isn't it -

Well, 15 pages of discussion seem to show that people do care.

Yes, about arguing.

That's quite an eclectic mix you have there David! I haven't got anything overly original to say, but here are a few suggestions:

Fates Warning  (USA)          The Spectre Within                         (Prog, a. 2014)   (1985)

The next logical step would be FW: Awaken The Guardian, though I think Parallels is the strongest of their early albums. You might like to try Redemption: The Fullness Of Time.

Psychotic Waltz  (USA)         Into the Everflow                         (Prog, a. 2010)    (1992)

Obviously, PW: A Social Grace goes with the above; then you might like to try Dead Soul Tribe: A Murder Of Crows (also Buddy Lackey); also give Zero Hour: Specs Of Pictures Burnt Beyond a try.

Gordian Knot  (USA)            Gordian Knot                                (Prog, a. 2009)    (1999)

Likewise Zero Hour again, also Cynic: Focus; I'd also thrown in Arcturus: Sham Mirrors

Tool                                    Lateralus                             (Alternative/Prog, a. 2010)   (2001)

A Perfect Circle goes without saying... also Soen: Tellurian

Aesma Daeva  (USA)            The Eros of Frigid Beauty      (Symph/Goth/Prog, a. 2022 Tongue) (2001)

I'm not overly familiar with them, but from the bits I've heard, Therion and possibly Haggard would be my go to for comparisons...

Taal  (F)                              Skymind                                         (Prog, a. 2011)   (2002)

Heard the name, but I'm completely unfamiliar with them.

OSI  (USA)                          Office Of Strategic Influence               (Prog, a. 2012)   (2003)

I think you know the drill here; Fates; Kevin Moore's Chroma Key (Dead Air For Radios), Porcupine Tree (Lightbulb Sun era) and of course, the two bands below...

Indukti  (PL)                        S.U.S.A.R.                                       (Prog, a. 2011)    (2004)

Riverside  (PL)                     Second Life Syndrome                      (Prog, a. 2018)   (2005)

Two superb albums... your go-to's are all listed above, along with Lunatic Soul...

Overall, I would also throw in Wastefall: Self Exile if you haven't heard it?

I can tell that I like best heavy and organic, not synthetic sound, and not much Pop-influence.

I keep on checking out, Jared, and thank you very much again for all the suggestions. Smile
