Just curious about how much prog metal people listen to on here and what their opinions of it are. I find that sometimes it creeps into my prog without me realizing it. When it does I usually don't have an issue with it though since I don't normally have much of a problem with it.

Other.
I would have voted “Almost Never”, but the text in parentheses doesn’t apply to me.

I've found so far about 10 Prog Metal albums I like, and about 20 of other Metal. That is 7% of my music collection.

I like the Avant, some extreme and math style metals but not the core.

While I do love quite a lot of metal - real metal, I voted for the second option Most of the time (with rare exceptions). If I feel like playing metal I put on some Bolt Thrower over... Psychotic Waltz. But there's still probably about 20-30 bands in PA's metal sections I really like.

I don’t avoid it, but it’s not my usual fare. I do have reasonably eclectic tastes. I often like a riff-based heavy metal (more in the classic sense) approach to music, but most if that is maybe more a kind of heavy rock by modern standards at least. I would like to hear more bone-crunching and brutal or evil riffage (to use the terminology of my teens). There is plenty of Prog music I like with metal qualities, such as Secret Chiefs 3, Morglbl, and Taal, And I like Kayo Dot and Maudlin of the Well very much. A lot of what I like which I think has metal qualities is likely better describes as experimental rock. There is plenty of post-metal that I like, but that’s kind of a different beast than what I tend to think of as Prog Metal. I like quite a bit of experimental metal oriented things. There are albums in our straight, more conventional I would think, Prog Metal category that I like, and I’m sure lots more to discover. No doubt the wider the way the Prog Metal term is used, the more I would enjoy (as should be expected). I’d like to hear some Canterbury metal scene Indo Prog Metal/ Raga Krautmetal sung in Kobaian.

The metal sub-genres have never been where I seek out new music, but when I hear about something new, exciting, or "extraordinary", I give it a shot. I have reviewed a lot of great metal albums, but most of what I hear is not really my cup of tea. Usually they have to have good melodic sensibilities and lots of atmospheric parts. Some of my favorites: Votum Harvest Moon Proghma-C Bar-do Travels Riverside Second Life Syndrome Arcane Chronicles of the Waking Dream Agalloch The Mantle Ghost Medicine Discontinuance Mastodon Crack the Skye Cynic Focus The Contortionist Clairvoyant Leprous Coal Dream Theater Awake Angra Holy Land Epica Chasing the Dragon Fates Warning A Pleasant Shade of Grey Scardust Strangers Karnivool Asymmetry Kettlespider Kettlespider Caligula's Horse In Contact Seiges Even The Art of Navigating by the Stars Tool Lateralus The Mars Volta Frances the Mute

I really like Prog Metal. I wouldn't avoid it just for being prog metal, but just as with any other music, it depends on the particular bands, albums, and songs, if I don't like them, then I don't.

Most of the time.
I used to listen to quite a bit of metal (the more underground kind) in the past, then had a few years' break when I didn't listen to any of it at all but am now getting interested in it again.
I like some technical death metal now and then, but generally metal must be horrible and crude and reek of sewers and rotten corpses.

Option #3. It is not my favourite subgenre (I usually prefer Symph, Eclectic, Xover, Zeuhl or Heavy), but well worth a try now and then.

It would probably be more helpful if what the OP meant by prog metal was defined, at least loosely. Because prog metal is fairly meaningless without qualification, covering a wide variety of sounds and styles, and having changed, evolved and (yes) progressed over decades.
There are definitely some styles of metal (prog or otherwise) that I struggle to find something I enjoy much (or at all), and other styles where I’m far more likely to enjoy listening to them.
But I wouldn’t avoid any style of music. I’m willing to give anything a go, because who knows until you’ve listened to something whether or not you will like it? Yes, you can have a good idea whether or not you might like something, or not - and more often than not, that idea probably turns out to be right. But there have been so many occasions where I’ve been surprised to really enjoy something.
I would never tell anyone that the way the choose to listen to music is wrong, and I’m not one of those “open minded” snobs who believe that anyone who doesn’t have an open mind is bad. But I do wonder, because of how vague the OP is, how much is being included/avoided in the definition of prog metal. For example, there are three prog metal “genres” in PA, and an acknowledged crossover with some other PA genres. Outside PA, the “genre” brutal prog is recognised, but within PA brutal prog bands can be found more or less evenly between RIO/Avant and the two outlying prog metal genres. Also outside PA, a lot of what is called heavy prog in PA is simply considered prog metal. It is definitely not uncommon, for example, to hear Rush called prog metal.

As those who were around years ago will remember, I used to listen to quite a lot of 'traditional' Prog & Symph-Prog Metal and still enjoy a lot of it when I hear it, but own precious little now. I haven't actually heard Dream Theater's new album yet for instance, which would have been unheard of a decade ago. That isn't because I have an aversion to it or am not interested; more that I think I hit a mental brick wall with metal in general because I didn't feel it was saying anything new to me.
What I would say is I've stepped back from the heavier stuff though; Communic's Waves Of Visual Decay is unlikely to get much future airplay for instance... it's arguably their best album, but too heavy for my tastes these days.

It's just a question of finding the time... I still have all of the albums to listen to in the 2nd Symphonic Metal poll as well as somehow finding the time to listen to most of the albums (excluding Avant Prog) in the 4th Modern Prog poll.

There's always an excuse, isn't there? You showed off and mocked me once saying you listened to progressive metal before I ever did. And yet you have never explored the genre beyond two bands.

Paul, I agree that time is of a premium for many of us; that's why I haven't gotten around to the new DT!
Your approach however seems to be rather 'scatter gun'. If a fellow forum member, knowing my tastes, directed me toward a particular album, I'd listen, because there's a greater chance that I'd like it than from my own random trawling...

It is absolutely NOT the total opposite of scatter gun. You may always listen to artists and albums in alphabetical and chronological order, but the way you find those artists and albums definitely tends to be scattergun, and you definitely tend to (repeatedly) ignore suggestions for things you might enjoy more. 🙄
You are a stubborn, obstinate and obtuse person. But I do enjoy reading your posts, as you amuse me with your bloody-mindedness and wilful ignorance. Carry on!

I know I'm as guilty as anyone in this regard, so this will be my last post concerning this particular side-alley, but I do find it amusing how so many of these threads swiftly become Paul-orientated.. Paul, your approach is one of a very organised scatter-gun. Alphabetical it may be, but it's still random and therefore time-consuming. How many albums have you listened to and discarded as not to your tastes? You say there are some PM albums you really enjoy. Well, Nick, Cristi and I would be more than capable of drawing you up a list of 10 albums you'd have a very significant chance of enjoying very much... but you don't want any help..

Usually but not always...
I have a couple of Dream Theater albums (the earlier work), two Queensrÿche albums (Operation Mindcrime and Empire), two Savatage albums (of which I actually only really enjoy one: Gutter Ballet) and I think that's about it.
I've listened to much more, also from these same bands, but most of it leaves me rather indifferent or is more of the same or just annoys me (especially when djent and the double bass drum seem to become something obligatory without doing it justice to the music...); to my ears it is often very formulaic (as is a lot of music, prog included, anyway).

No, i like prog metal. I was a metal fan first before i was into any prog music. Got into Arena in 2004, got into Savatage in 2006, into Threshold and Dreamscape in 2007. Then eventually gave classic prog rock goes.

Until I first went online in 2010, I had no idea you could listen to music on the Internet, mainly because I still thought You Tube was the name of a TV show.
Not surprisingly, I'm no fan of Dream Theater's Systematic Chaos album either, although I'll resist the temptation to give it a thumbs down. |
How does anyone not know about the internet in 2010? |
I must have led a sheltered life.
In my defence though, there were no full albums on YouTube in 2010 - videos were still limited to 15 minutes duration back then.

I still find that hard to believe. It's still 2010, not the 90s or early 2000s.

If it is bullets we are talking about while saying "progressive metal"s, I surely stay away from them. If I had the powers of Neo though, I could stop them.
Did I say Neo?
I missed our Neo-Prog discussions with Paul. I was using a different account then, though.

I like most prog metal, and most of it that I've come to be familiar with is/was due to PA! I was never a real "metal head" growing up (except some early Rush); now I like it more than ever, and have even gotten into some of the growls (which I used to despise).
But nearly all my friends who like Prog (to some degree--few are actually "prog-heads" like I am) do NOT generally like the prog metal I've presented to them.
BTW, so far, this poll seems to verify the conversation of just a couple days ago in my random shuffle post: (someone suggested PA was becoming "metal archives" but this comment was met with much disagreement, and I suggested heavier tracks seemed not to do as well in the random polls).

Indukti (PL) S.U.S.A.R. (Prog, a. 2011) (2004)
Riverside (PL) Second Life Syndrome (Prog, a. 2018) (2005)
I can tell that I like best heavy and organic, not synthetic sound, and not much Pop-influence.

As I seem to have seen it, most of Prog Metal is influenced by Neo-Prog, and what I like is that without this influence. At the same time, I don't like growling vocals, so it hasn't been easy for me with Prog Metal, and it has been some easier with non-Prog.

Ksiz - Nerve of War Liquid Tension Experiment - I and II Special Providence - Soul Alert
The last two are more proggy and less metallic, IMO.

Actually, I do find that hard to believe, not because mobile phones are such wonderful things and how could you be without one, but because there are forces at work pushing us all into having a smart phone simply to prove who we are.

I believe it. He didn’t say he didn’t know about the Internet. It is perfectly believable that Paul went online for the first time in 2010, and just as believable that as he was only just beginning to use the Internet, that he would not necessarily know all he could do on it. It’s entirely believable that he would not know he could listen to music on YouTube.
And I could also easily believe he has never owned a mobile phone. Plenty of people don’t, and although I do, I barely use it as anything more than a glorified iPod. It’s a hand me down from my wife, as I never found the need for a mobile phone, and if I’m using it at all, it’s usually only to play music. And that’s music I’ve loaded onto the phone, as I’ve never streamed music on my phone.
I know people that had never used the Internet until after 2010, so Paul going online only then is not as unbelievable as you seem to think. Given what we can infer of Paul’s character and idiosyncrasies by his posts, it seems to me highly likely that Paul is telling the truth here. I can definitely believe he had not used the Internet prior to 2010, that he was unaware he could listen to music on YouTube, and that he has never had a mobile phone.
