If the music is of a style that you don't like, yet you perceive is as good (maybe good at what it does), does that automatically mean that you will like it? Perhaps by good you just mean "good for you", otherwise we may be into some thorny subjective vs, objective territories. To make it more obviously subjective, one might state it as, "If I enjoy the music, then I like it regardless of the style" but then there would be a tautology (saying the same thing twice with like and enjoy) and then it seems like it should go without saying. I actually have found compositions to be good that I don't enjoy. I can recognise the quality without appreciating it, and this goes for styles too. It could be hard to appreciate good compositions of a style that one does not appreciate or yet understand. There are lots of things I believe to be good that I cant fully appreciate because I lack the knowledge and experience to really "grok" them, or I just recongise it not to be my "bag". If I deem a composition to be good, and it is of a style that I generally appreciate, then I am likely to enjoy the music. Edited by Logan - May 14 2022 at 07:32 |

yes, good for me "If I enjoy the music, then I like it regardless of the style" - I agree.

^^ I think you mean that some music can strike our sensibilities as admirable without necessarily being lovable? I'm probably wrong as I seldom understand a word of your posts.

No, not what I meant or understood from Logan's sentence there. If I like something, then that's that, I like it, whether it's pop, rock, metal, jazz, prog, whatever...

This is a group conversation, so I see no need to apologise Cristi, and part of what I was saying was indeed "that some music can strike our sensibilities as admirable without necessarily being lovable".
You have an advantage over me, I commonly understand your posts but too often wish I didn't. Edited by Logan - May 14 2022 at 08:01 |

^ "It will often be a question when a man is or is not wise in advancing
unpalatable opinions, or in preaching heresies; but it can never be a
question that a man should be silent if unprepared to speak the truth as
he conceives it" George Henry Lewis - who was a bit of a theatre/theater ponce by all accounts but I couldn't have put it better myself. I don't want to labour the point as I've said this previously but you still always strike me as neurotic/compulsive/narcissistic

I don't avoid prog metal but much of what I hear just leaves me cold. I do like Porcupine Tree's metal era. I like some Tool, some Mars Volta, Early Queensryche, and if you consider it prog metal, earlier Iron Maiden.

Yes, you have pointed that out again and again, not that I have ever sought your diagnosis or comments, and I have been open about my actual mental health issues (maybe that seems narcissistic to you). Perhaps you could write it us an assessment and send it to my GP, although I do think it is much better to diagnose a person. Not that any of that should be your business and I don't think that it is at all appropriate to be diagnosing someone as you have -- if you were an actual practicing psychologist than it would be even more reprehensible. As an ex-admin, considering this quote this might have ben more appropriate:
I have defended against you being banned before, but I question that. Maybe we both should be banned, since we both can be overbearing and unpleasant. I thought before maybe I could just avoid you, but you seem compelled to respond to my posts and comment on my character unbidden and I do find your behaviour to be bullying, insulting and denigrating (not just toward me, but you seem to have particular beef with me although I don't recall having personally offended you). Maybe you can only attack the man because you can't understand a word of my posts to attack the arguments. I will bring this up with Keishiro, and see what he thinks. And if you are sadistic, then perhaps you can smile that you really have got me more despondent than my usual sad-self. By the way, since I have had strokes, that could bee affecting my ability to clearly communicate (my mother has expressive aphasia due to her last stroke), but maybe you felt the same even before those. I do sincerely apologise to any that I have been rude to, and one positive thing in my exchanges with you is that it does remind me of the kind of person I want to be. Peter Capaldi is in your sig, and as Doctor Who (he is my fave of the modern ones) he asked, "Am I a good man?" I want to be a good man, for my kids, my wife, this world, sorry if I have fallen so very short. It's a reminder to me to just be kind. "Winning? Is that what you think it’s about? I’m not trying to win. I’m not doing this because I want to beat someone, or because I hate someone, or because I want to blame someone. It’s not because it’s fun. God knows it’s not because it’s easy. It’s not even because it works because it hardly ever does.. I DO WHAT I DO BECAUSE IT’S RIGHT! Because it’s decent! And above all, it’s kind! It’s just that.. Just kind. If I run away today, good people will die. If I stand and fight, some of them might live. Maybe not many, maybe not for long. Hey, you know, maybe there’s no point to any of this at all. But it’s the best I can do. So I’m going to do it. And I will stand here doing it until it kills me. And you’re going to die too! Some day.. And how will that be? Have you thought about it? What would you die for? Who I am is where I stand.. Where I stand is where I fall. Stand with me. These people are terrified. Maybe we can help a little. Why not, just at the end, just be kind?” (The Doctor - Doctor Who - The Doctor Falls). Edited by Logan - May 14 2022 at 10:37 |

^ If banning me means that no-one has to read the self pitying virtue signalling drivel of most of your posts then everyone will have benefited. It's PA's loss kiddo.

I recall you once writing a post saying something about how you should be banned. Okay, banned. Unfortunately, they will still be able to see my drivel, just not yours. At least you won't have to deal with the compulsion to respond to my posts anymore. |

It looks like he's only been suspended. PA seems very reluctant to permanently ban people and maybe that's a good thing since everyone deserves a second chance. However, most people who act like jerks on here don't seem to be able to redeem themselves. I think it's usually best to just ignore people or stay away from those who have given us problems (that's what I do with Rednight and I get the feeling he does the same). It's usually just not worth it to engage with people on here although I admit ignoring people can be very difficult because we all have a sense of pride where we feel like we need to respond and defend ourselves.

I generally don't like it, but I really love most Riverside and Lateratus has grown on me. I also like early Haken, but Vector and Virus did nothing for me.
But bands like Dream Theater, The Mars Volta, Meshuggah (or any other djent band) make me want to chew my leg off.

Do you believe that someone's never owned an iPod or had a mobile phone? What about never having sent or received a text? Because that applies to me. Am I a liar too?
