It seems that at least 60 percent of those who responded on here either don't care for prog-metal much (if at all) or only like it in small doses. I suppose I'm one of those small doses people myself since I have to usually be in the mood for it.

I'm not against it as a matter of principle, but I like very little of it. It has its moments though.

voted Almost never (I like most but not all)
I grew up listening to bands like Queenrysche, Fates Warning and Savatage. Then i started listening in the early 90´s technical thrash metal scene (Coroner, Target, Toxik, Anacrusis, Voivod, etc.) then progresive metal and technical death metal, norwegian black metal (In The Woods..., Enslaved, Ulver), later doom metal, death doom metal. Cant stand power metal (except Blind Guardian) and symphonic metal

I suppose I could have and maybe should have worded this poll a bit differently. I apologize for any confusion it may have caused anyone. "Do you enjoy prog-metal?" probably would have been a more direct and succinct way of putting it.

Agreed. The way it's titled right now seems like bait, especially with its inherently negative tone. The poll options could have been presented a bit more clearly as well, especially since prog metal has become such a broad and nebulous style over time. On PA alone, we have three separate prog metal categories, as well as many other categories that occasionally cross-pollenate with it (crossover prog, RIO/Avant, etc.) Edit: Crap, I just realized you were the one who made the poll. I'm sorry if this came off as harsh, lol

Nah, it's ok. Of course I'm the one who made the poll though otherwise I wouldn't have apologized for the way I created the poll!

Tbh. it's not really my thing, but I acknowledge its qualities. If anything, I do enjoy Metallica's 80's albums, and while they don't qualify as prog metal, I'd say the musical structure of several tracks is quite proggy.

Usually but not always. I can enjoy metal of almost any kind, but to be honest, most of it sounds the same to me, even, and perhaps especially, the prog metal.

I think with any poll, the best thing is to keep it simple. As soon as anyone adds something in parentheses to a polll option, it tends to confound rather than clarify. As I stated in my earlier post, I would have voted for Almost Never (just as I would vote for Almost Never for absolutely any genre, regardless of how much personal affection I have for the music of that genre), but the parenthesised addition didn’t apply to me at all, so I ended up voting for Other. Like Brendan, I did think the way the poll has been titled and set out looked like bait. Like Paul, I don’t believe you were deliberately trolling, but the presentation did have a negative tone. It’s a pleasure to see you take this on the chin, rather than get defensive this time. Brendan has also alluded to what I posted about earlier in this thread, also, which is that what you mean by prog metal has not been defined in any way. From the responses of many, it is clear the confusion over what is considered prog metal or not - and a lot of people have named bands that they listen to that they don’t consider prog metal, but which are by a great number of other people. Saying I like prog metal is about as meaningless as saying I like rock and pop. It covers such a huge array of styles and sounds, and most people simply won’t enjoy them all, even if they LOVE one of them. It becomes meaningful to ask if someone likes prog metal only once you put some boundaries or definition upon what you are asking. Even if it’s just letting us know that by prog metal you mean just the “prog metal” section of PA (not including the other two prog metal genres included in PA). Even that PA genre has a surprising variety to it, and likely most people will only ever like some of the styles and sounds that can be found there. And, as I mentions earlier, I think it’s important to recognise that PA is hardly the be-all and end-all of what is considered what. Outside PA, you will find bands that are routinely considered prog metal by many, that appear in PA under Prog Related, Crossover, Eclectic, Heavy, and RIO/Avant. Thus there could potentially be people here who think they don’t like prog metal, based on how PA has pigeonholed the music they listen to, but which might be almost certainly considered prog metal outside PA. None of this is meant as a criticism of your poll, by the way. It was a good idea for a poll, that could possibly (as you’ve admitted yourself) been presented better. It has still had quite a response, so I don’t think (m)any overly concerned or upset by it. |

i like some of it when I first hear it, but it bores me rather quickly, Dream Theater being a good example.

No, because Riverside should be in the Heavy Prog category. I don't stay away from Prog Metal that has some original content.

I had written earlier "First 4 albums are progressive metal definitely. If we had multiple labels/tags, heavy prog and crossover could fit some of their music. " I just don't mind Riverside classified as progressive metal. There are metal influences (for lack of a better word) in their music after all. MMA, which has multiple labels for albums, classify only their 4th album as progressive metal, which I guess it's correct as it is their heaviest.

At the risk of another 'Off-topic' post (apologies to Mike for this), but I feel the need to point out that like Paul, I also do not own a mobile phone of my own and never have had. I am forced to have one for work purposes, but am strictly not allowed to use it for personal reasons (PA, ebay, Facebook, personal calls etc). I do understand that this stance is becoming more difficult, but my Internet Bank agree to allow me to confirm payments via email rather than mobile text, while Paypal occasionally need verification and still do so via a landline automated message, with a code I put online via my laptop. I can see a time when I'm going to be forced down that route, although it will never become a 'mobile' mobile if that makes sense; it will just sit next to my router, where the landline does now. I am lead to believe that BT have plans to pull the plug on landlines by 2025 as they will no longer be cost effective, which will force me into the above, but I fear for the resulting vulnerability of the older generation... Sue's mum is in her late 80's, has no mobile or internet connection. She lives 80 mins away and we can only communicate with her through our landline...
