I've been listening to a bit of his work... it sounds like a
classical King Crimson! Anyone know where I can get albums of his
compositions being performed decently?

Anywhere that sells classical music...
I agree though - strong Bartok influence in KC. If you want to hear a perfect blend of the two then why not try After Crying for size? I reckon you'd dig 'em, MO. |

Did you listen to "The Miraculous Mandarin" by Bartok? If not, then I highly recommend it. The first public rendition of it in Cologne, conducted by Jenô Szenkár, caused one of the biggest scandals in the history of music. The lord mayor of Cologne, a certain Konrad Adenauer (who later became the first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany), forbade further performances. |

Trousy, have you checked out Flying Food Circus yet? It's pretty
much the proper Samlas Mammas Manna of the 21st century, featuring
Hasse Bruniussen... I don't have any Samlas albums, but the song
on the archive is a LOT like FFC's stuff.

I'm investigatin' lad! I'm very strapped for cash right now so I've got a huge backlog of albums I want to purchase, but I'm hunting for an mp3 or two to give me a rough notion of the album. It's almost certain that I'll be getting it regardless. YOU, meanwhile, should get hold of some Samla albums! Maltid and Kaka are the way to go! |

Listening to the samples right now... well, that's another demand on my overstretched wallet... *sighs*
If there's one thing guarenteed to sell an album to me it's silly noises. |

Before this is moved to the non-prog section: agreed on Bartok!!! The Concert for Orchestra is one of my favourites pieces of music. And yes, you can find many recordings out there. There are some recomendations in the Gramophone Recommended Recordings service (http://www.gramophone.co.uk/recrecordings.asp), but not too many... Also agreed on After Crying!!! If you already placed the order I'm sure you won't be disappointed. I'm particularly fond of their album Bootleg Symphony: it's basically classical music, but including for example a rendition of KC's The Great Deceiver (on orchestra)...

It shouldn't be moved to Non-Prog... Bartok, Flying Food Circus, Samlas, and After Crying are all prog...
Edit: Sampled a track from Bootleg Symphony... the Great Deceiver part is BRILLIANT! I MUST hear more of these guys. WHY does online ordering TAKE SO LONG!? Edited by Man Overboard |

Bartok is classical as is the name of this thread, MO. The rest of it maybe prog but not the title. I remember learning a few simple compositons by Bartok when I took piano lessons ages ago. Very tricky and intricate without being bombastic if I remember.

Blaaaah. If we can include Krautrock and RIO and other things retroactively as prog... meh.

To be fair... they ARE prog. Bartok is classical. Proggy classical, but classical nonetheless - got to draw the line somewhere! |

Can you edit the thread title to read "Is Bela Bartok prog?" That way it will stay!
