Thanks for all the nice comments on I'd rather drink muddy water, particularly this one. Chances are you are much more of an expert for this kind of music than I am. In fact I hadn't really been attracted to this style despite respecting it a lot, however long time ago a friend of mine with musical tastes much different from mine played this album and I thought, this is really great, I absolutely need it,  and it grabs me more than anything of this genre I had heard before. Unfortunately I didn't do much to explore the "genre" (if it's considered as such) much more, but the album remains a jewel in my collection.

...and on to the voting. Once more a great poll here with many discoveries and nice surprises.
Also once more I'll make my task a bit easier by not voting for things I had already known. That's here the songs by Joan Osborne and Living Colour, both great and would've been contenders for sure, and Ha Ha Ha Ha (Yeah), which I also like despite not being quite up with the other two in my taste.

Alas, even then I'm (also once more) left with more than three songs that I like so much that I have a hard time not voting for one of them. That's Laura Nyro, Rhiannon Giddens, Kool and the Gang, Jackie Venson, and Ebo Taylor.

OK, I've got to make a decision here, and that's...
Rank 5 for Kool and the Gang's Open Sesam. This flows wonderfully and comes with some great ideas and hooks, and I'll only vote against it with the lame excuse that I know quite a bit of Kool & Gang and am generally not that keen on them. But still...

Rank 4 Rhiannon Giddens - Julie. Just wonderful in its crystal clarity and simplicity, so another unfair decision to not vote for something, but that's how it is - I had earmarked this for voting when listening before nomination but am now drawn to others that I hadn't heard at that point by the surprise factor only.

I'm not going to rank the first three as I can't really and I don't have to, so in no particular order votes go to
Jackie Venson - Love Transcends: Not sure how specifically this is "black music", but this is really how rock music should be played, underlined by the video that is done in my favourite way, showing musicians living their music while playing.

Eli's Comin' - Laura Nyro: Wow, top dynamical and energetic track here, up and down and up again it goes.

Ebo Taylor - Ayesama: Shortly before the end of the list comes this surprise around... I'm a sucker for this kind of African music that like a big stream takes everything with it that is in its way, total music.

Mascot: All proposals are nicely iconic, and some nice additions are mixed into the playlist - the two that I love most here are Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin, and for the fun video I'll give it to the Queen of Soul.

I'm glad that you enjoyed this one. Choosing an African track was a bit tricky but I thought that it shouldn't be missing. This musical style is a blend of various music genres, both African and American. It emerged back in the 1970s in Nigeria and Ghana (afrobeat/highlife) and is connected to the history of the African continent, that is the decolonisation period.- I've meanwhile ordered the Rawls/McCann album, a vinyl LP by the way. Smile

It is the modern take or one persons take of the black struggle in the USA (and black diaspora generally) for a long time. We all know blues and rock and roll has been homogenized pretty much. I'd say, this is a good example of using that rock/blues genre to make a point (rather than some other genre).

Laura Nyro is one of the greatest singer-songwriter ever (imo).

I have open this poll thinking about her song Eli's comin', that I consider a masterpiece.

Catching up... Listening to the playlist was a pleasant experience, but it also confirms that blues won't become a favorite genre of mine - my attention was regularly going elsewhere...
Anyway, excluding the known ones, two stood out for me and get my first votes: Laura Nyro and Jackie Venson. My third vote is a bit of a toss-up, but it finally goes to the energy of White Denim.

The razamataz is a pain in the bum
