Greetings members of Progarchives! I am very "old school " in the sense that I am not thrilled over downloading. I buy cd's instead and since I collect mostly obscure titles I am often faced with the dilemma of something going out of print. There are situations where a particular cd will never be re-released. For many years I've tried to find Michael Giles- Progress and the first two Julverne cd's at a fair price however I am dreaming and it's ridiculous of me to think I could find them without paying an extremely high price or trading something rare . Has anyone on Progarchives struggled with this? Would you be so kind as to make a list of recordings that you've been searching for ? It would be interesting to know what obscure Prog titles are out of print.

Completely agree with you Jacob.
I'm also "old school" in that I like to own the physical album (CD format) and some are devilishly difficult or impossible to get hold of. I tried to get hold if Anglagards Hybris for years, but you can't get it unless you want to pay silly money. James Baldwin did an interesting article on Museo Rosenbach's Zarathustra the other day, but try getting hold of this album on CD and its impossible! |

Area's Arbeit Macht Frei is another one that I simply can't get hold of in CD format

Hi,
I think I have around 200 albums in my collection that are STILL not on CD and will probably never will be. It would be nice to see some things done properly and better (if that's possible) but I am not sure that some of these folks have the resources for it ... great example? Sensation's Fix. I'll make a list one of these days, but I am wanting to mp3 these things and posting them illegally so other folks can hear it.

I used to be the same until my CD collection hit somewhere around the 15,000 mark. Nothing wrong with listening on YouTube :) Contact some of the labels and push for reissues of titles you want. Also you can always make CDs out of any internet source by downloading the video and recording the audio and then ripping it to a CD and printing out the cover art. Not the same i know but at least you'd have a physical source.

Wow...that's interesting. Thanks everyone for responding! It must be the license process that makes life difficult idk? I'm guessing to license a certain Prog release is expensive and it might be a situation where once it's released it sells out quickly yet the label that licensed the recording is not making enough profit to release it a second time and so therefore it gets deleted and the price then gets ridiculously high whether it's a sealed copy or a used copy. I could be wrong. I'm thinking it must be difficult to be in the business handling that.

Tenko's Energeia, Beledo's El Céfiro and Museo Heterodoxo's De Los Brujos, Magos Y Alquimistas are seemingly non-existent in any form on the internet, and physical copies are either unavailable or else prohibitively expensive. me sad After glancing at my Discogs wantlist, some more out-of-print stuff that's hard to acquire at a reasonable price on CD that I can think of includes: * The Tony Williams Lifetime - The Old Bum's Rush * Tipographica - Tipographica * Thinking Plague - Early Plague Years * White Noise - White Noise 2: Concerto For Synthesizer as well as most Cardiacs albums and pretty much anything by Soft Heap

If i had unlimited space and money, it would be many times that. I have a very eclectic palette and there's a lot of stuff in there that would make proggers cringe! Having said that i have a large amount of prog and metal and pretty much everything else! Including cheesy pop, reggae, R&B, punk etc

Silly Puppy...it's good to be diverse regarding your taste in music and you certainly are. I have the same deal but nowhere near your league. I realize that a lot of Prog fans would cringe if they saw a cd in my collection such as Lucifer 1. Maybe even Metal purest would too...but I love that album.

I have some seriously cringe-worthy additions! Barry Manilow, Olivia Newton-John, pop country artists, Spice Girls, New Kids On The Block etc I used to do DJ-ing so have a good collection of pop music I have many greatest hits of cheesy AOR bands, dance pop, disco, easy listening etc. Most of my music is cool though. Lots of prog, metal, classical, jazz, world ethnic music, experimental etc

More CDs go OOP than most people realize. As another physical media proponent, I'm aware of that painful reality.
Eventually, some CDs do get reissued (if not here, perhaps in Japan), but many don't. There are many albums (various genres) from the '80s that have not been reissued, and some weren't even pressed on CD! Thankfully, there are good people out there who enjoy making vinyl and cassette rips for upload to YouTube.

Happily I have all of those. Though I also have a long list of unrequited wants. I just won't pay silly prices for a CD, so I am resigned to the fact that I'll never get many of them. My approach is this: - add to Discogs wants list. Then you get an email every day with new items of interest. - add to eBay saved searches, with email alerts. - sit back and wait patiently. Every now and then something that usually comes with a fancy asking price will pop up for peanuts and I'll pounce on it. Very satisfying when it happens! Still keeping an eye out for Ruth White cds and most Electronic artists in the U.S. during the 60s. Mort Garson's 2 occult albums were released on cd and I picked those up quickly. Now they appear to be going out of print. Beaver And Krause Ragnarok has never been released on cd. Paul Beaver was a great pioneer of the synthesizer and an innovator . Ragnarok I want just for 3 Electronic pieces. I'm not particularly fond of the album. One Beaver & Krause album on Limelight and several bizarre Ruth White releases on Limelight. Wendy Carlos I have about 6 cds and most of her back catalog is out of print. I would seriously like to have the early Stomu Yamashta on cd. When he was more of an Avant-garde artist collaborating with others and prior to going to England , working with Hugh Hopper, Gary Boyle, etc and releasing about 5 solo albums that were Prog...sometimes sounding Canterbury with an Asian "feel" and Esoteric released those. Then he disappeared into a monastery for about a year and surfaced again with ceremonial music such as the Iroha-Ka series which was some of the darkest Electronic music and practically demonic. . Then he did the soundtrack to Tempest which was beautiful. All of the aforementioned have never been released on cd...ugh! He lives in a temple writing ceremonial music . I really hope to see this stuff released one day...but I sincerely doubt it ever will be.

This got a vinyl reissue this year (multiple pressings), so...fingers crossed!
The 2010 Japanese remaster is readily available, but it's not cheap! ![]()
CD-R only. These sorts of things only turn up when another collector on a site such as this wants to offload some merch.
A bona fide rarity!
This definitely needs a reissue.
This album has been reissued on CD many times in a jewel case or paper-sleeve (vinyl replica) format. The recent Sony reissues and the 2015 L'Espresso remaster are easy to find.
CD-R only. I doubt it will get a proper reissue unless a mystery benefactor chooses to issue their entire discography as a box set.
