Greetings members of Progarchives! I am very "old school " in the sense that I am not thrilled over downloading. I buy cd's instead and since I collect mostly obscure titles I am often faced with the dilemma of something going out of print. There are situations where a particular cd will never be re-released. For many years I've tried to find Michael Giles- Progress and the first two Julverne cd's at a fair price however I am dreaming and it's ridiculous of me to think I could find them without paying an extremely high price or trading something rare . Has anyone on Progarchives struggled with this? Would you be so kind as to make a list of recordings that you've been searching for ? It would be interesting to know what obscure Prog titles are out of print.

Completely agree with you Jacob.

I'm also "old school" in that I like to own the physical album (CD format) and some are devilishly difficult or impossible to get hold of.

I tried to get hold if Anglagards Hybris for years, but you can't get it unless you want to pay silly money.

James Baldwin did an interesting article on Museo Rosenbach's Zarathustra the other day, but try getting hold of this album on CD and its impossible!

Hi,

I think I have around 200 albums in my collection that are STILL not on CD and will probably never will be.

It would be nice to see some things done properly and better (if that's possible) but I am not sure that some of these folks have the resources for it ... great example? Sensation's Fix.

I'll make a list one of these days, but I am wanting to mp3 these things and posting them illegally so other folks can hear it.

I used to be the same until my CD collection hit somewhere around the 15,000 mark.

Nothing wrong with listening on YouTube :)

Contact some of the labels and push for reissues of titles you want.

Also you can always make CDs out of any internet source by downloading the video and recording the audio and then ripping it to a CD and printing out the cover art. Not the same i know but at least you'd have a physical source.

Wow...that's interesting. Thanks everyone for responding! It must be the license process that makes life difficult idk? I'm guessing to license a certain Prog release is expensive and it might be a situation where once it's released it sells out quickly yet the label that licensed the recording is not making enough profit to release it a second time and so therefore it gets deleted and the price then gets ridiculously high whether it's a sealed copy or a used copy. I could be wrong. I'm thinking it must be difficult to be in the business handling that.

Tenko's Energeia, Beledo's El Céfiro and Museo Heterodoxo's De Los Brujos, Magos Y Alquimistas are seemingly non-existent in any form on the internet, and physical copies are either unavailable or else prohibitively expensive. me sad

After glancing at my Discogs wantlist, some more out-of-print stuff that's hard to acquire at a reasonable price on CD that I can think of includes:
* The Tony Williams Lifetime - The Old Bum's Rush
* Tipographica - Tipographica
* Thinking Plague - Early Plague Years
* White Noise - White Noise 2: Concerto For Synthesizer
as well as most Cardiacs albums and pretty much anything by Soft Heap

If i had unlimited space and money, it would be many times that.

I have a very eclectic palette and there's a lot of stuff in there that would make proggers cringe!

Having said that i have a large amount of prog and metal and pretty much everything else!

Including cheesy pop, reggae, R&B, punk etc

Silly Puppy...it's good to be diverse regarding your taste in music and you certainly are. I have the same deal but nowhere near your league. I realize that a lot of Prog fans would cringe if they saw a cd in my collection such as Lucifer 1. Maybe even Metal purest would too...but I love that album.

I have some seriously cringe-worthy additions!

Barry Manilow, Olivia Newton-John, pop country artists, Spice Girls, New Kids On The Block etc

I used to do DJ-ing so have a good collection of pop music

I have many greatest hits of cheesy AOR bands, dance pop, disco, easy listening etc.

Most of my music is cool though.

Lots of prog, metal, classical, jazz, world ethnic music, experimental etc

More CDs go OOP than most people realize. As another physical media proponent, I'm aware of that painful reality.

Eventually, some CDs do get reissued (if not here, perhaps in Japan), but many don't. There are many albums (various genres) from the '80s that have not been reissued, and some weren't even pressed on CD!

Thankfully, there are good people out there who enjoy making vinyl and cassette rips for upload to YouTube.

Happily I have all of those. Though I also have a long list of unrequited wants. I just won't pay silly prices for a CD, so I am resigned to the fact that I'll never get many of them.

My approach is this:

- add to Discogs wants list. Then you get an email every day with new items of interest.

-  add to eBay saved searches, with email alerts.

- sit back and wait patiently.

Every now and then something that usually comes with a fancy asking price will pop up for peanuts and I'll pounce on it. Very satisfying when it happens!

Still keeping an eye out for Ruth White cds and most Electronic artists in the U.S. during the 60s. Mort Garson's 2 occult albums were released on cd and I picked those up quickly. Now they appear to be going out of print. Beaver And Krause Ragnarok has never been released on cd. Paul Beaver was a great pioneer of the synthesizer and an innovator . Ragnarok I want just for 3 Electronic pieces. I'm not particularly fond of the album. One Beaver & Krause album on Limelight and several bizarre Ruth White releases on Limelight. Wendy Carlos I have about 6 cds and most of her back catalog is out of print. I would seriously like to have the early Stomu Yamashta on cd. When he was more of an Avant-garde artist collaborating with others and prior to going to England , working with Hugh Hopper, Gary Boyle, etc and releasing about 5 solo albums that were Prog...sometimes sounding Canterbury with an Asian "feel" and Esoteric released those. Then he disappeared into a monastery for about a year and surfaced again with ceremonial music such as the Iroha-Ka series which was some of the darkest Electronic music and practically demonic. . Then he did the soundtrack to Tempest which was beautiful. All of the aforementioned have never been released on cd...ugh! He lives in a temple writing ceremonial music . I really hope to see this stuff released one day...but I sincerely doubt it ever will be.

CD-R only. These sorts of things only turn up when another collector on a site such as this wants to offload some merch.

This album has been reissued on CD many times in a jewel case or paper-sleeve (vinyl replica) format. The recent Sony reissues and the 2015 L'Espresso remaster are easy to find.

CD-R only. I doubt it will get a proper reissue unless a mystery benefactor chooses to issue their entire discography as a box set.

Expensive, but so worth it.

Plus when you buy from the Alphabet Business Concern you can be assured that at least 0.5% of the money will go to the undeserving wretches in the band.

All CARDIACS cds are available on the official website.

I don't think they are expensive at all considering how much they went for before they were reissued.

24 pounds for Sing To God may sound expensive but it's a freaking masterpiece!

I recall having the vinyl years ago. I keep thinking that someone or something really angered Wendy Carlos and she is using her legal power to keep her music from being re-released. I have not googled the subject matter, but it's got to be a particular unfair action perhaps that has truly ticked her off. She is truly diverse! I have Switched On Bach, Sonic Seasonings, Digital Moonscapes, Beauty In The Beast, and Tales Of Heaven & Hell on cd and when listening to those 5 cds it sometimes feels like each one of them is recorded by a different artist. I believe she changed music by creating new ideas . I have always felt that she did that with Sonic Seasonings and although Pink Floyd were capturing that momentum on Ummagumma...she seemed to capture it in Electronic Music with extended soundscapes that were different than Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream and Eno . She was very original sounding

Agree wholeheartedly with the comments on Sing to God! That's one I do own on CD and it was worth every one of its £24 from Alphabet. Cardiacs' masterpiece without any doubt (without any doubt in my mind anyway)

In 1980 I collected all 10 volumes of Brian Eno's Obscure label series. Over the last 30 years possibly 4 or 5 of those volumes have been issued on cd . I've always dreamed of a box set. Each one as a gatefold with the original black covers. A booklet which details the history of the project. I would also love the entire catalog of Ron Geesin to be released on cd just like they were released on LP in the 70s . It seems highly unlikely

Reissuing CDs that are OOP, I doubt that happens. You might get a reissue of the CD on LP before, your best bet is to scour the ebay as well Discogs. But finding some of them for a couple bucks aint gonna happen, especially obscure titles.
I'm also a physical media guy, but only LPs, there are many many titles that only came out on CD that are now out on LP version, but I'm not thinking the reverse will happen.

I did buy a CD the other day, it was Gabriel's soundtrack for Passion-Last Temptation of Christ, bought for $1. You can't buy a pack of gum for a $1.......

Grits : As the World Grits, on Cuneiform. A totally amazing mid 70s band who never had a proper album release until Cuneiform released their demos in the early 90s. Now out of print, and according to Steve Fiegenbaum, it is next to impossible that we will ever see a reissue (due, IIRC, to the wishes of the deceased composer’s estate).

Thankfully I have a copy, but it’s sad that many more will not hear this band. Cuneiform keeps a close eye on illegal uploads of their releases too, so you won’t find it on YouTube. I certainly respect that vigilance, but still, I wish the music could come to light again.

I see that one used at our local music store from time to time.

Just a quick glance on Discogs, it's not really that hard to find or ridiculously expensive even for the newer remastered versions.

I do recommend the remastered versions because they are of much better quality than some of the original CD releases.

Sadly this is always a concern, which has added a little extra push when buying new CDs. Its always best not to wait and to buy. This obviously donsn't help with older, OOP stuff, but would prevent the situation from arising in the future.

I wish a wealthy eccentric who believes in merit and doesn't care about profit come along and invest in Prog. Is determined to license recordings either by contacting the original label or the artist themselves and paying them whatever they want. Design the cover to its true value, history in a booklet, etc..but release it a second time or a third time so the cd never goes out of print A person of this nature comes along once in a lifetime. The person's main interest is Prog, they are so wealthy they can afford to lose money, and the act itself brings them happiness..and it would solve an on going problem for all the hardcore supporters of Progressive Rock who would die for specific obscure Prog releases but are in a price range between 2 and 3 hundred dollars.

A lot of cds are out of print. I could post my list from discogs. Pretty much everything I have on there is out of print on cd. Smile

I think because of the mass media's judgement that cds are a dying format, there is little interest in record companies to repress out of print cds (especially prog which is considered very niche to begin with).
