Oh, thank you for that! But it doesn't have to be prog. But I'll check out that thread! :) Renaissance and Mostly Autumn are cool, but they don't seem to have the hard/heavy sound that I'm looking for. I'm more into hard-rock and metal. :)

Taking only metal into consideration you've got the already mentioned Doro/Warlock, but there's also a few 1980's thrash metal bands such as:

all the bands I mentioned (others as well) were from the 70s and 80s. 

I can go even further back in time with Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane (Grace Slick)

I'm happy you listen to The Gathering, but there were many other female artists before Anneke.

For a female fronted band with a heavier prog sound then definitely check out Babe Ruth as I mentioned earlier in the thread.

Grace and Janis were certainly the pioneering ladies of hard rock singing - I'm struggling to think of anyone before them to be honest, and we are now as far back as the mid 1960's.

Carol Grimes' Delivery deserves a mention too, although they're more of a Blues Rock band than Hard Rock. Thumbs Up

"Pioneers of female-fronted hard-rock" definitely goes to Fanny.  No question.  I saw these girls a couple of times back in 1971 and they were awesome live.

Special mention to lead singer Jinx Dawson and her band Coven from the late 60s/early 70s.

From Wikipedia (note the name of the bass player and the song):
Quote Coven was composed of vocalist Esther "Jinx" Dawson, bassist Greg "Oz" Osborne, guitarist Chris Neilsen, keyboardist Rick Durrett (later replaced by John Hobbs), and drummer Steve Ross. They are recognized by metal fans and metal historians as being the band that introduced the "Sign of the horns" to rock, metal and pop culture (as seen on their 1969 debut album release Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls, which has an opening track called "Black Sabbath").

Jucifer (from Athens GA) is one I don’t think has been mentioned yet. Started in the 90s. Metal duo with Amber Valentine on guitar & vocals and her husband on drums. Quite rockin’ and eclectic. They did a double concept album about the French Revolution (L' Autrichienne) that’s all over the place.
