Another excellent poll theme!

I posted a Tuomari Nurmio song on the last poll and some people liked it so here's another one. Punainen planeetta (the red planet) is the title track of his 1982 album and it's more in art rock vein rather than blues. The song is about a farm/country boy who receives messages from beings from outer space and describes his experiences/fantasies of traveling in space. This song is my nomination for this poll.

J.M.K.E. are an Estonian punk band active since 1986. Here's a song called Antikristus ja kuldsed talrikud (Antichrist and golden saucers). It tells how Antichrist comes and destroys the earth and select people escape to space on golden saucer-like ships. I think. (don't be afraid of the punk tag, they're from the more innovative end of the genre)

As a bonus here's a song by my band that makes references to UFO sightings and alien abductions, written by yours truly.

My nomination is an Italan classic:

Eugenio Finardi: Extraterrestre

This melodic pop-blues song, one of Eugenio Finardi's most famous, was written in the Prog era, in the seventies, when Finardi released proletarian-priced records for the same label as Area.

He re-recorded it in the nineties and this is the new version.

Please, read the text, it is a very beautiful allegorical parable.

ET

There was a guy who lives in a dormer window

To always have the sky close

He wanted to pass over life like an airplane

Because he didn't care

About what people did

Only one thing was important to him

And he practiced all the time

To develop that latent talent

Which is hidden in the folds of the mind

And at night lying on the bed looking at the stars

From the window in the roof with a message

Fly make contact, he said:

Extraterrestrial take me away

I want a star that's all mine

Extraterrestrial come and look for me

I want a planet to start over

One night his message was received

And in an instant he was transported

Painless on an unknown planet

The sky a little more purple than normal

The sun is a little warmer, but a good taste in the air

Land to consult, and after the land the sea

A whole planet to play with

And slowly awareness

Mixed with sweet security

"The universe is my fortress!"

Extraterrestrial take me away

I want a star that's all mine

Extraterrestrial come and get me

I want a planet to start over!

But after some time its safety

It begins to show signs of uncertainty

He feels the bitterness growing inside

Because now that his purpose has been fulfilled

He still feels empty

He realizes that nothing has changed in him

That his fears haven't gone away

On the contrary, they have always increased increases

From amplified loneliness

And now he spends his life searching

Still to communicate

With someone who can bring him back, he says:

Extraterrestrial take me away

I want to go back to my house

Extraterrestrial come and look for me

I want to go back to start over!

Extraterrestrial take me away

I want to go back to my house

Extraterrestrial do not abandon me

I want to go back to start over!

That way I can look them up myself in the WeTube window.
Thanks.

First listen, to the end of Page Two:

Kees:  The Comet Is Coming “Astral Flying”  High pitched something with repeating, flowy keys, drums start up.  Sort of a horn sound on keys, I think? joins in.  There are some deep thrums and the horn begins again with the same melody it struck up the first time, but now varies.  It becomes clear now that it is indeed an actual sax.  Excellent space/electronic rock.  Again The Comet Is Coming with “Journey Through the Asteroid Belt”  Wiggly wogglies and swirlies at the outset, drums are very far back in the mix.  Keys come to the fore, pretty quickly joined by the sax.  Very engaging piece.

Anders:  Gnags “Fra en fremmed planet”  Begins with some sustained guitar notes and spacy sounds, like they are spiraling down.  Now I’ve opened the lyrics and indeed, the person is spiraling down to earth.  What a sad thing (and true) to find, as the singer describes what he’s seen in just two weeks.  The music is appropriately skewed sounding, as indeed it should be, we should be so much better to one another.  The pace picks up about halfway in and it turns into a real rocker.  There is a deep sarcasm in the music versus the lyrics as the rock part is very upbeat.  The piece slows down again and there is another spirally part.  It winds up with almost a church organ sort of sound and some swirlies.  Einstürzende Neubauten “Total Eclipse of the Sun”  Melancholy start, with an orchestral sound (but no orchestra, so pre-recorded?  As this is a live performance).  I quite enjoy the moodiness and the ominousness (if that’s a word).  Interesting machine adds some percussive pieces (a self-built instrument, or something I’ve not seen before).  Very tense piece, there is some nice sustained feedback on guitar and quite the vocal screech from the singer, about 3/4ths in.  You get the feeling he may have the power to summon the eclipse, by his sheer will.

Christian:  Cat Stevens “Novim's Nightmare”  Haven’t heard this before, even though obviously, Cat Stevens is very well-known.  Begins with piano and bass, in a minor key (already a fan of that).  Such a gorgeous voice.  The song reaches a crescendo about halfway in, then drops back to feature the voice, with soft chorus behind.  Not sure if he’s speaking in terms of numerology, with 9 being the highest number, or is it something else?

Tigerfeet:  Billy Lee Riley & The Little Green Men “Flying Saucers Rock ‘n’ Roll”  Wrangly guitars, a song about rockin’ aliens in a rockabilly form.  Fun novelty song.  Lemon Demon “Ancient Aliens” This one starts with a sort of eerily quiet vocal and swirly keys that come more to the fore, along with drums and guitars after the intro.  Reminds me a bit of Oingo Boingo crossed with Elvis Costello. Another fun romp with whatevertheymaybes.

siLLy puPPy:  Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds:  Just a part of the story, The Eve of the War.  Richard Burton narrates (beautifully, I might add).  An orchestral and electric ensemble with what sounds like electronic drums.  Flute-y keys and a string section carry a back and forth with one another.  Soaring lead guitars and lovely bass.  Richard Burton’s narration continues during the piece.  Justin Hayward’s unmistakable voice sings a chorus from time to time as well.  Piece ends with theremin-like weeoohs and Richard setting the tone for the rest of the story.  Steve Vai “Little Green Men”  Whirlies start the piece out with some antic voices and Zappa-esque complexity and sarcastic asides (expected with Vai, of course).  Song where my friend’s music show derives it’s name, “Light Without Heat.”  Megadeth “Hangar 18”  As one would expect, gets right down to metally business.  Lots of flashy guitar and driving beat here.  Keeps up the breakneck pace to the end.  Muse “Starlight”  Nice contrast to the no-holds-barred speed of the previous song.  Alt rock with a singer boasting a fine falsetto.  TOOL “Rosetta Stoned”  Heavy feed-backy, then crunchy guitars and a spoken vocal open the song. After a bit, an impassioned vocal and some dynamics shifts happen several times, all with an apocalyptic feel.  Vocals become a bit more effected, still impassioned, but less vehement.  More feedback guitar with relentless percussion and bass about 7 mins in, then layers of sound reenter the fray.  Comes to an abrupt end.  blink 182 “Aliens Exist”  Another one that gets right to it, kind of a They Might Be Giants tone here.  Humourous tone to the song with wailing guitars and steady beat.

@Mike: Can't see the Flaming Lips one.

Nice topic by the way, and I'm surprised how little I have - means that I don't know almost anything, good for (space) discoveries.

By the way, @JD: You can add the Cat Stevens one, Novim's Nightmare. @Nicky, yeah, numbers are very important on that album (it's called Numbers), and Novim is number nine and not happy with that, probably because it's the last number. Can't tell you much more I'm afraid. My father has that album and it has a nice booklet, and as a teenager I figured out the story, but I've got to say that I remember little (I have it in digital form and no booklet will help me anymore).

^ @silly puppy - if you want to participate in the poll, you'll have to make a final nomination out of your songs, the more songs you post, the harder to pick LOL

Once the poll is ready, we listen to all the songs and vote for our three favorites.

Unless I misunderstood, it's post a maximum of two songs, then only vote for one song when the time comes for this round.

1. Post a non-prog video or two max, meaning you should avoid bands that are listed on the Prog Archives site. Gotta keep it manageable so choose your songs wisely.

2. Listen to the music that has been posted.

3. Keep checking back until you've listened to them all.

4. Then we will vote for our top song....
