Subject: Interactive Poll: Outta This World

The news is full of UAP (UFO's for the old guys) sightings and the US government is finally letting the public hear what they've been saying in private all along. There's 5hit out there that we just don't know what it is.
So the theme is : Things that are outta this world.
Your galactic overlord is impatiently waiting to see what you meat sacks can come up with.
So...my Game my rules??
1. Post a non-prog video or two max, meaning you should avoid bands that are listed on the Prog Archives site. Gotta keep it manageable so choose your songs wisely.
2. Listen to the music that has been posted.
3. Keep checking back until you've listened to them all.
4. Then we will vote for our top song.
5. Everyone
is welcome to vote once the voting opens. Please do not vote before
the voting opens. I will add the songs when the submitter confirms their final choice in no particular order.
6. If I mess up, get over it, I'm just doin' the best I can.
Enjoy.

It's awesome. Usually we have done vote for three songs, but rules can change from poll to poll.

The first that came to my mind (I won't nominate it, but this is one of my two videos to mention, my nomination is below it):
Tubeway Army - Praying to the Aliens
I used another track from this soundtrack as my nomination in another poll:
This, Mica Levi's "Alien Loop" from the Under the Skin OST, is my nomination.
Mica Levi - Alien Loop
I decided to confirm my nomination as "Alien Loop" now as I will be so busy that I might neglect to later.

Question, associated artist is under prog-folk, under band name, however not listed solo. Band was many years prior to solo work. OK or no?

I've just watched the movie The Shadow Men, which is an alien abduction film, and entered the forums only to see this. The film was in my list for quite some time. Is this a "sign" for me to participate in this round? Haha, life is sometimes strange; or more often than sometimes.

We have done some for songs (i.e. has singing), some for instrumentals, and some for both. I wanted to be sure since you specifically mentioned songs. With some that can mean any music, and with others songs specifically refers to music that is sung (has vocals), which is how I generally use the term. Anyway, thanks, have included my instrumental choice.

Out of competition: Bruce Dickinson - Starchildren
And here is a bonus, the male singer is me. (Sumeria... Well, ancient alien gods & stuff.)

Great idea! There would be some obvious classical choices, of course and quite a few from the prog spectrum, I decided to go acoustic.
A clever song by one of my favourite singer/songwriter types, Vance Gilbert. "Goodbye Pluto"
And a song inspired by Ray Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles," another perennial favourite, Tom Rapp. With Pearls Before Swine, he had a couple of space-themed songs, they are considered a Prog Folk group, for those unaware. This one was released after a years-long hiatus, as part of a solo return to recording.

Going to go offbeat with my selections.. For anyone who had listened to Dr. Demento, this song should be familiar.
The Firm - Star Trekkin'
And then we have the Tubes.
Tubes - Space Baby
And out of competition, a theme like this deserves some Styx "Come Sail Away", but I will go with the Eric Cartman cover version.

I am sure that not everyone has unlimited new artists to bring, it's all been about meeting a theme. I have a list of artists that I haven't yet shared because they haven't fit any of the themes yet, and also have shared some artists more than once. I don't think there's been a consensus ruling on how often one should share an artist, some also have a lot more catalogue to choose from. Wondering how others feel.

I have shared artists more than once and don't mind hearing other tunes by artists shared previously as it helps develop a wider picture of that artist. We have had the same artist come from different members as well. And with some themes it does become an interesting challenge and I find it enjoyable to hear others' interpretations of that challenge.

I generally would try to avoid nominating the same track by an artist in different Interactive Polls, but that's it. I have had no issue with bringing up different tracks from the same artist in these polls, and I wouldn't mind mentioning the same track in different Interactive polls.
I nominated a track this time from a soundtrack of which I nominated a different track from it before. I doubt many will want to sit all the way through this one, but hoped it might provide some contrast with others. Maybe I'm just getting lazy.

Have not been much around lately and won't be, at least untill Monday, so a quickie from me, because everything out of this world that came to my mind is on PA... A recent discovery, thanks to one of these IA polls (I think it was proposed by Ian...) is the next that comes to mind. Out of laziness and lack of time to look further, two suggestions from the same band - no aliens, but maybe because of the previous poll, I'm still wandering around a bit...
The Comet is Coming - Astral Flying:
The Comet is Coming - Journey Through the Asteroid Belt:
The latter will be my nomination if I'm not back before with something else...

Mica Levi - Alien Loop (Logan)
It contains some very disharmonic and dissonant strings in what sounds to me like the soundtrack to a horror film. It also reminds me of the guitar noise effects from the Sort Sol version of "Ode to Billie Joe" which had a heavy use of tremolo too. Cacophonic and nightmarish, but also strangely beautiful in its own way.
Keldian - Starchildren (Shadowyzard)
A mix between the lighter end of heavy metal and 80's electro. Since it is quite far away from my taste, I don't think I can really judge it properly, but there are definitely some good elements in it. I think the sound is a bit too polished for me, even with the heavy distortion and double pedal.
Klaus Nomi - Total Eclipse (JD)
There is verfremdung en masse, and the setup is very theatrical. Musically it has some clear new wave vibes, and it is quite catchy. I have never been a big fan of operatic singing in pop and rock, nor of falsetto, but it somehow works here.
Comet is Coming - Journey Through the Asteroid Belt (suitkees)
It is based on a 5/4 beat. Feels a bit like an intersection between two tracks with vocals, but maybe I am wrong. With the sound effects and bass I somehow come to think of some of the tracks on The Clash' Sandinista album.
It's nice to know the first nominations already, because it gives me more time to listen. So I am clearly in favour of this format.

Cat Stevens - Novim's Nightmare
The lyrics don't exactly give it away very clearly, but this starts the Numbers story set on the planet Polygor. It is indeed a bit unearthly at least.

Notes on Page One, first listen:
JD: Classix Nouveaux “Nasty Little Green Men”Begins with a repetitive keyboard and
percussion, then guitars, and vocals enter with a sense of urgency.80’s ish sound, with a classic verses/chorus
structure.Guitars are a little wangly
and there are some fun whirlies on the keys.Klaus Nomi “Total Eclipse”Singer’s look is a mix of other-worldly and mime, with an operatic
delivery, must be 80’s as well, I’m guessing from the rest of the band and the
sound of the piece.Fascinating to watch
and listen, as it combines styles musically and is very campy/theatrical.
Logan:
Tubeway Army “Praying To The Aliens”
Electronic whaaas and deedlees with a robotic type voice (80’s
again?). Music is very angular, going
with the general robotic sort of delivery.
Oh I see it is Gary Numan, I almost said reminds me of him, lol. Didn’t know where he came from (space,
lol?). Mica Levi “Alien Loop” Begins with space whirlies, I like the more
free-form start of this to the previous one.
An ambient piece of music, it is more aligned to how I feel about space
than the rigidity of the first piece.
Cristi:
Hail Spirit Noir “Alien Lip Reading”
‘Eavy metal, here, mixed with a bit of psych. Vocals are a bit different than one would
expect with such a heavy, swirly outfit.
Theremin swirls drift through.
The vocals remind me more of late 60’s, in that the vocals are effected
more than one would hear would later metal.
Warlord “Aliens” Right on in to
heavy guitars and drums after a short swirl entry. This is a driving metal song, with some
really high falsetto notes occasionally from the lead singer. Comes to a dead stop in the middle, then
picks right up and goes into an quasi-Middle Eastern sort of riff, then the
driving guitars start up again. Air “Space Maker” Echo-y percussive beat,
guitar strum, bass and piano. This one
has a more ominous sound to it.
Electronic keys shimmeringly join in, helping to create a more complex
and sophisticated sound than the previous two.
UFO “Space Child” This one I do
remember from the past. A bluesy sound
to the vocals, in a slow ballad sort of piece.
Scorching guitar lead.
Shadowyzard:
Keldian “Starchildren” Plinky
angular keyboards and steady guitars and drums get this off to a steady
start. Doubled up and harmonizing vocals
kick in. Another driving metal piece,
this has a nice break in the middle with strings (probably done on keys?) and a
second break with plinkies, adding interest to the piece. Bruce Dickinson “Starchildren” Wastes no time in getting heavy with driving
drums and a strident vocal. These are not
light little starchildren, dancing airily about, they are the dark side of
potential alien invasion. Hope they don’t
make it here soon, lol. Celestial Asylum “Sumeria, Realm
of the Gods” Begins with a Renaissance-styled
guitar. Vocals come in, very like a
group of minstrels, male and female both.
Very courtly in feel, as perhaps ancient Sumeria would indeed likely be. Very pretty and rustic.
George: The
Firm “Star Trekkin’” I loved Dr Demento! I don’t remember this, though, it is quite
fun, as expected. A light take on
matters celestial, a novelty romp and cleverly done. The video is like a Pee Wee’s Playhouse Claymation,
but of course all based on Star Trek. The Tubes “Space Baby” I remember when they were all the rage in SF
clubs, never did get a chance to see them live, though. There is a sense of tongue-in-cheekiness to
the piece. Not at all in the same style,
but reminds me of Zappa in the sense of it’s commentary and theatrical
feel. All competent musicianship here,
there are some really fun vocal harmonies near the conclusion. Styx’s “Come Sail Away,” as done by Eric Cartman.
As expected, quite the sendup of the original, done in Cartman’s voice. The piano playing is quite well done, joined
with full band as the piece slowly builds.
Everything is quite
straight-forward except for the vocal. The
center section is quite woogly for a moment or two, before going back to the
arena rock style of band behind the vocal.
Well done!

This poll is really fun and right up my alley.
The first song that came to mind for me is:
Billy Lee Riley & The Little Green Men - Flying Saucers Rock 'n' Roll
I used to play this track way back in a band in the 80s when it was quite out of fashion but no matter the kind of crowd we got, they always got into it. We used to do an extended version with plenty of room for jamming and wild rock-a-billy lead guitar.
By contrast my 2nd nominee would be by a fun song named Ancient Aliens by a bad band named Lemon Demon.
Lemon Demon is a band created by musician Neil Cicierega who incidentally is quite a cult figure in the very early days of social media/viral world, as well as being multi-talented in numerous fields.

Another excellent poll theme!
I posted a Tuomari Nurmio song on the last poll and some people liked it so here's another one. Punainen planeetta (the red planet) is the title track of his 1982 album and it's more in art rock vein rather than blues. The song is about a farm/country boy who receives messages from beings from outer space and describes his experiences/fantasies of traveling in space. This song is my nomination for this poll.
J.M.K.E. are an Estonian punk band active since 1986. Here's a song called Antikristus ja kuldsed talrikud (Antichrist and golden saucers). It tells how Antichrist comes and destroys the earth and select people escape to space on golden saucer-like ships. I think. (don't be afraid of the punk tag, they're from the more innovative end of the genre)
As a bonus https://luuranko.bandcamp.com/track/erakkomaja-ja-avaruuslaiva" rel="nofollow - here's a song by my band that makes references to UFO sightings and alien abductions, written by yours truly.

My nomination is an Italan classic:
Eugenio Finardi: Extraterrestre
This melodic pop-blues song, one of Eugenio Finardi's most famous, was written in the Prog era, in the seventies, when Finardi released proletarian-priced records for the same label as Area.
He re-recorded it in the nineties and this is the new version.
Please, read the text, it is a very beautiful allegorical parable.
ET
There was a guy who lives in a dormer window
To always have the sky close
He wanted to pass over life like an airplane
Because he didn't care
About what people did
Only one thing was important to him
And he practiced all the time
To develop that latent talent
Which is hidden in the folds of the mind
And at night lying on the bed looking at the stars
From the window in the roof with a message
Fly make contact, he said:
Extraterrestrial take me away
I want a star that's all mine
Extraterrestrial come and look for me
I want a planet to start over
One night his message was received
And in an instant he was transported
Painless on an unknown planet
The sky a little more purple than normal
The sun is a little warmer, but a good taste in the air
Land to consult, and after the land the sea
A whole planet to play with
And slowly awareness
Mixed with sweet security
"The universe is my fortress!"
Extraterrestrial take me away
I want a star that's all mine
Extraterrestrial come and get me
I want a planet to start over!
But after some time its safety
It begins to show signs of uncertainty
He feels the bitterness growing inside
Because now that his purpose has been fulfilled
He still feels empty
He realizes that nothing has changed in him
That his fears haven't gone away
On the contrary, they have always increased increases
From amplified loneliness
And now he spends his life searching
Still to communicate
With someone who can bring him back, he says:
Extraterrestrial take me away
I want to go back to my house
Extraterrestrial come and look for me
I want to go back to start over!
Extraterrestrial take me away
I want to go back to my house
Extraterrestrial do not abandon me
I want to go back to start over!

First listen, to the end of Page Two:
Kees: The
Comet Is Coming “Astral Flying” High
pitched something with repeating, flowy keys, drums start up. Sort of a horn sound on keys, I think? joins
in. There are some deep thrums and the
horn begins again with the same melody it struck up the first time, but now varies. It becomes clear now that it is indeed an
actual sax. Excellent space/electronic
rock. Again The Comet Is Coming with
“Journey Through the Asteroid Belt”
Wiggly wogglies and swirlies at the outset, drums are very far back in
the mix. Keys come to the fore, pretty
quickly joined by the sax. Very engaging
piece.
Anders:
Gnags “Fra en fremmed planet” Begins with some sustained guitar notes and
spacy sounds, like they are spiraling down.
Now I’ve opened the lyrics and indeed, the person is spiraling down to
earth. What a sad thing (and true) to
find, as the singer describes what he’s seen in just two weeks. The music is appropriately skewed sounding,
as indeed it should be, we should be so much better to one another. The pace picks up about halfway in and it
turns into a real rocker. There is a
deep sarcasm in the music versus the lyrics as the rock part is very
upbeat. The piece slows down again and
there is another spirally part. It winds
up with almost a church organ sort of sound and some swirlies. Einstürzende Neubauten “Total Eclipse of the Sun” Melancholy start, with an orchestral sound
(but no orchestra, so pre-recorded? As
this is a live performance). I quite
enjoy the moodiness and the ominousness (if that’s a word). Interesting machine adds some percussive
pieces (a self-built instrument, or something I’ve not seen before). Very tense piece, there is some nice
sustained feedback on guitar and quite the vocal screech from the singer, about
3/4ths in. You get the feeling he may
have the power to summon the eclipse, by his sheer will.
Christian:Cat Stevens “Novim's
Nightmare” Haven’t heard this before,
even though obviously, Cat Stevens is very well-known. Begins with piano and bass, in a minor key
(already a fan of that). Such a gorgeous
voice. The song reaches a crescendo
about halfway in, then drops back to feature the voice, with soft chorus
behind. Not sure if he’s speaking in
terms of numerology, with 9 being the highest number, or is it something else?
Tigerfeet: Billy Lee Riley & The Little Green Men “Flying
Saucers Rock ‘n’ Roll” Wrangly guitars,
a song about rockin’ aliens in a rockabilly form. Fun novelty song. Lemon Demon “Ancient Aliens” This one starts
with a sort of eerily quiet vocal and swirly keys that come more to the fore,
along with drums and guitars after the intro.
Reminds me a bit of Oingo Boingo crossed with Elvis Costello. Another
fun romp with whatevertheymaybes.
siLLy puPPy: Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of
the Worlds: Just a part of the story,
The Eve of the War. Richard Burton
narrates (beautifully, I might add). An
orchestral and electric ensemble with what sounds like electronic drums. Flute-y keys and a string section carry a
back and forth with one another. Soaring
lead guitars and lovely bass. Richard
Burton’s narration continues during the piece.
Justin Hayward’s unmistakable voice sings a chorus from time to time as well. Piece ends with theremin-like weeoohs and
Richard setting the tone for the rest of the story. Steve Vai “Little Green Men” Whirlies start the piece out with some antic
voices and Zappa-esque complexity and sarcastic asides (expected with Vai, of
course). Song where my friend’s music
show derives it’s name, “Light Without Heat.”
Megadeth “Hangar 18” As one would
expect, gets right down to metally business.
Lots of flashy guitar and driving beat here. Keeps up the breakneck pace to the end. Muse “Starlight” Nice contrast to the no-holds-barred speed of
the previous song. Alt rock with a
singer boasting a fine falsetto. TOOL “Rosetta
Stoned” Heavy feed-backy, then crunchy
guitars and a spoken vocal open the song. After a bit, an impassioned vocal and
some dynamics shifts happen several times, all with an apocalyptic feel. Vocals become a bit more effected, still
impassioned, but less vehement. More feedback
guitar with relentless percussion and bass about 7 mins in, then layers of
sound reenter the fray. Comes to an
abrupt end. blink 182 “Aliens Exist” Another one that gets right to it, kind of a
They Might Be Giants tone here.
Humourous tone to the song with wailing guitars and steady beat.

@Mike: Can't see the Flaming Lips one.
Nice topic by the way, and I'm surprised how little I have - means that I don't know almost anything, good for (space) discoveries.
By the way, @JD: You can add the Cat Stevens one, Novim's Nightmare. @Nicky, yeah, numbers are very important on that album (it's called Numbers), and Novim is number nine and not happy with that, probably because it's the last number. Can't tell you much more I'm afraid. My father has that album and it has a nice booklet, and as a teenager I figured out the story, but I've got to say that I remember little (I have it in digital form and no booklet will help me anymore).

Page three and up to here first listens and a few additions:
Hiram:
Tuomari Nurmio “Punainen Planeetta”
Starts off with lovely guitar riff and a mid-range voiced male
singer. The song is light-hearted in feel,
whatever his experiences, he is more bemused than frightened by it, I would
think. Enjoyable, wish I had the lyrics in English, you’ll have to let me know
if I’m correct on my feelings about how the person took this close encounter. J.M.K.E. “Antikristus ja
kuldsed talrikud “ Intriguing
title! Much harder edged than the
previous choice. Definitely moves along,
in a fairly typical punk-ish sort of way.
Lots of driving bass and crashing of drums throughout, with chorded
electric guitar for the most part.
Luuranko “Erakkomaja ja avaruuslaiva”
Begins right off with the full band, vocals are fairly monotone. I enjoy the guitar riff, with it’s surf-type
embellishments and the feeling of being slightly imbalanced, or off-centered.
Mike:Minus the Bear “I’m Not Totally Down with Rob’s Alien” Love that title! Begins with some percussive
sounds, twinkly guitar and some keys.
Vocals join in, way way back in the mix.
The vocal comes to the fore with more twinkly guitars underneath. The guitars become very thick and distorted
during the chorus-y parts. Keyboards
create a wash underneath it all. Love
the whimsical feel of the whole thing.
The piece ends with some beacon-y keyboards, fading out. Gorillaz “Every Planet We Reach is Dead” This one has a wry feel to it, with wah-wah
guitar and repetitive keys, and percussion that sounds almost like
fingersnaps. Vocalist reminds me a bit
of Jack Bruce, kind of more laconic, however.
There is a quavery chorus behind.
Love hearing that string finger-squeak at 2:08. A wall of sounds comes in about 3 mins in
with keyboard chords and a synth wiggle waggle.
The song becomes very bluesy, but with a modern edge provided with the
mixing technique. Before the end, there
is a bit of a string section (on keys, I think) before the song ends. Flaming Lips “UFO’s Over Baghdad” Begins with a horn playing the familiar notes
of “Taps.” Keyboards are played over and
the band kicks in with a marching beat on the drums. An alt rock sound to the act, there is a
waveriness to the singer’s voice that brings Ray Davies to mind. Sorry I compared not just one, but two
vocalists in your choices, I don’t tend to do that a lot, but there it is. Hope you don’t mind. There is a wistfulness
to this song, as was prefaced with the choice of the intro. It seems as though the song is done, but
there are some ominous sounds that come back in for the final couple of
minutes. Flaming Lips “Space
Oddity” Ominous start, with single notes
with a marimba sound. Nice cover and
lovely theatrics. It almost feels like
they’ve turned into a cult that worships Bowie, lol, like years after he’s gone
with the quasi-religious theme. I like
this band a lot, thank you.
Lorenzo: Eugenio Finardi “Extraterrestre” Bass, keys
and drums at the start. A singer in the
style of what I think of now, thanks to Lorenzo in particular, as being in “the
Italian style,” although, obviously, there are many more styles that make up
the Italian perspective. This has a horn
section punctuating the piece, which in general, feels upbeat. Sitar or sitar/guitar comes into play as
well. From the words, I get the feeling
of wherever you go, there you are, after all.
Even if you manage to get to another universe. Also, the idea that the striving is the
important part of the journey of self-realization, not the attainment of it.
dr wu23: Graham Parker “Waiting for the UFOs” I do know both of your selections, first
thought I had from the topic was the very fun “Purple People Eater,” a classic. Graham Parker’s tune is very much in his
style of straight ahead singer/songwriter rock and Sheb Wooley’s song is as
already said, a classic! I hope that for
some it is new, since it’s a clever novelty song. Fleetwood Mac “Hypnotized” Familiar with this one, as well. As mentioned with cstack’s choice, I like
this era of them a lot. Good
choice.
cstack3: Fleetwood Mac “Bermuda Triangle” This has a mild bluesy feel, but touches on
jazz as well, as did most of his material.
I enjoyed much of this era of Fleetwood Mac, it was a logical
continuation of the Peter Green era, which was extremely bluesy, as most know
around here, I would guess. Loved his
“Jewel-Eyed Judy,” song on Kilnhouse, in particular. Fun speculative song, this one.
George: Billy
Thorpe “Children of the Sun” Mysterious
woogly sounds start this one off, then the drums kick in in an unpredictable
way. More wooglies and swirlies, then
the vocals begin in a quavery, yet clipped voice. The vocalist reveals that his more of a
gravelly singer, than quavery. The song moves
into slow motion, almost, with guitars and chorus-y vocals, which are much
effected. Guitar commences with a more
standard rock/blues lead. The oddly
syncopated drums return with bass at the fore.
siLLy puPPY: J Geils Band “No Anchovies Please”Peter Wolf’s outfit, this one is comedic, as
would be expected from the title.A
spoken piece with wonkly sax and music behind. The Smiths “Panic”Morrissey’s
funny song about hanging the DJ, another humour-laden song, including little
kid voices in the chorus.
Hyruchu: Marek Biliński & Bank "Opowieści
kosmiczne" This one begins with
dark sounds, almost militaristic to me, then the lead guitar, although it’s
back in the mix, becomes more jubilant.
Keyboards come to the fore. The
pace switches to become a bit slower about halfway in, a musical bridge, I
would think. And yes, back to the main
theme again to closing, with more swirly-whirlies on keys and back to guitar
lead to closing.

Of course I don't mind the vocal comparisons, it adds some good insight to the songs. I'm glad you like what you heard by The Flaming Lips, they are quite an interesting band, doing things in odd ways. They've made a 24-hour long album that was sold as a memory stick inside of a candy skull for a sale price of $10,000. Of course, it's quite rare, but you can hear the song on YouTube. They have also had some interesting guests on some of their albums, from Jim James to Miley Cyrus to Henry Rollins. They also did a complete cover of the entire Dark Side of the Moon album and it's really strange. But their original music is always the best and varies from regular pop to really spaced out psych rock. They have quite a huge discography too.

Very creative people, obviously. Probably fun to hang around with, reminds me of my old crowd (still friends with them, but some have gone to the other side, sadly). Musicians, visual and performance artists, crafters, writers, no field of art left unvisited.
As an insight, for this one, every single one of your selections would have it into final consideration for me. I don't think I've done that with any one person before, in all of these polls. Very inspired choices.

Next batch of songs.
Air - Space Maker (Cristi)
An instrumental track with a very interesting groove built around some percussion instrument (or is it just a random object that is played on?). There are some rather ominous synthesizers too. I like it a lot. Possible contender.
Tom Rapp - Mars (Snicolette)
It begins with a purposely badly played violin which is quickly counterpointed by a warm acoustic guitar and a down-to-earth (or rather to-Mars?) vocal performance. It's a singer/songwriter ballad. The sound aesthetics is pleasantly dry and "living room"-like. There's also a very thoughtful, slightly melancholic feel to it. The lyrics are narrative, and they sound quite poetic to me. Another possible contender.
Billy Thorpe - Children of the Sun (mathman0806)
Starts with some dark sounds. Then there's a rather weird drum solo of sorts, after which the sound effects come back along with a distorted guitar with chorus effect. Then enter the singing. I like the vocals a lot, especially the vocal harmonies. Is there a bit of early Queen about it overall?
Billy Lee Riley - Flying Saucers Rock n Roll (tigerfeet)
I don't normally connect 50's rockabilly with space invasions, and if I could not understand the lyrics, I would never have guessed what it was about. On the other hand, there were quite a few (very bad) science fiction films made during the 50's, and the clip that is used underneath the audio reminds me of Plan 9 From Outer Space (except it's in colour, and you can't see the wires that the saucers are hanging in - boo!). A cool track in any case.
Steve Vai - Little Green Men (siLLy puPPy)
This one contains some pretty hilarious midi-sounding instrumental imitations, combined with a vocal that appears to be recorded at a low speed and then speeded up. I can't really connect it with one of the ultimate gods of the guitar nerds. Several elements in the music (unusual time signatures and off-beat instrumental melodies) remind me of Frank Zappa. I can not decide if it is fun or just silly - or both - but I think Zappa was better at the Spike Jones department.
Tuomari Nurmio - Punainen Planeetta (Hiram)
The music sounds quite new-wave'ish, but interestingly I think the production values are more 90's-like. It's a very basic production with only a few overdubs, but that also gives it a freshness and some charm. There's something a bit naive about the music too which I really appreciate. Despite the topic, it is very down-to-earth.

Thank you, Anders...indeed the violin was deliberately skewed, to seem more alien, I would imagine. Tom Rapp was a wonderful poet/lyricist, imo. He also wrote another Bradbury-inspired song, "Rocket Man," (predating the Elton John song of the same name, slightly different subject) and several more space-themed songs, all with his group Pearls Before Swine. A compilation album of covers of some of his PBS songs was entitled "For the Dead in Space," featuring The Bevis Frond, Damon & Naomi and The Shy Camp, released in 1997.

Last batch of songs:
Gorillaz - Every Planet We Reach is Dead (TCat)
Interesting soundscape as usually with Gorillaz. There's a lot of electronics and avant sounds, as well as a wah-wah guitar. The vocal harmonies are kind of gospel-like. Strong contender.
Eugenio Finardi - Extraterrestre (jamesbaldwin)
Very late-80's to early 90's sound aesthetics (the keyboards + the snare drum sound). Judging by the speed in which the words are sung, there should be some substance here. Was a translation provided? I don't remember.
Graham Parker - Waiting for the UFOs (dr wu23)
And now for something very different. The melody and sound is a bit odd. I think I need to hear it again to judge it properly, but it is quite a quirky number. Not a type of music I would normally associate with something extraterrestial.
Cat Stevens - Novim's Nightmare (Lewian)
The song starts with acoustic guitar and piano. Composition-wise it is very folkish, especially with regards to the melody. The arrangement gradually builds up towards the end, f.e. with vocal harmonies. Fine song, as are most of the entries in this poll.
Fleetwood Mac - Bermuda Triangle (cstack3)
I'm not very familiar with Bob Welch era Fleetwood Mac, and I don't think I have heard this one either. There's something a bit introvert or mystic about their music from that period. It makes it difficult to really get hooked on it, but on the other hand it is also fascinating in its own way. Had it not been for Mick Fleetwood's easily recognizable drumming, I would not have guessed that this is the band who later made Rumours.
Marek Bilinskiki & Bank Opowiesci kosmiczne (Hrychu)
Heavy riff-based guitar rock containing synthesizers in the front. The track is purely instrumental. My main association is 70's hard rock. I like it a lot.
I like most of the songs, so I am afraid voting will be difficult.

About Eugenio Finardi: Extraterrestre
You are right, it's easy listening but the text is important.
If you go on page 2, you find the lyrics.

My podium is at the bottom.
Here's my general take:
Mica Levi - Alien Loop (Logan): A nice ambient instrumental piece. If I were an alien, I'd abduct a woman wearing furs and torture her! (As in the image of the video.)
Air - Space Maker (Cristi): Very nice sound. An OK song. More like an improvisation than a composition.
Tom Rapp - Mars (Snicolette): I loved the cover art! And mind you, I didn't expect such a song after seeing it. Nice country vibes! Sorta "timid" vocals (lots of "out of the tunes", but not in a spoiling way), and a tranquil spirit.
Billy Thorpe - Children of the Sun (mathman0806): Wow! This deserves to be a classic! Awesome!
Klaus Nomi - Total Eclipse (JD): I made a poll including this song recently. ( http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=126564" rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=126564 ) As one can guess, I love this song!
Comet is Coming - Journey Through the Asteroid Belt (suitkees): Wow, the sax sounds like electric guitar at the beginning. I was fooled. An authentic sound, for sure. Loved the "theme" also. Darkly beautiful and charming, mesmerizingly sophisticated. Thumbs up! (I slightly complain about the use of the hi-hat cymbal though.)
Gnags - Fra en Fremmed Planet (The Anders): Who would've guessed that this song with a static intro rocks & rolls thereafter? Loved the outro too. Very professionally made song, which is also enjoyable.
Billy Lee Riley - Flying Saucers Rock n Roll (tigerfeet): Easy to play, hard to feel! (Ah was it about blues?) Always a delight to listen to classic rock 'n' roll! Steve Vai - Little Green Men (siLLy puPPy): A funny and fun song. Musically interesting too. This is prog, people! Tuomari Nurmio - Punainen Planeetta (Hiram): For no obvious reason, I liked the vocals a lot. Very soulful. If it were sung in English, I wouldn't be crazy about it, I guess. Gorillaz - Every Planet We Reach is Dead (TCat): I guess I haven't missed much by not listening to this famous band before. Sounds like a good song in its style, but sadly I'm not interested in such music. Eugenio Finardi - Extraterrestre (jamesbaldwin): Ah unlike the one above, this song has a soul! Very dynamic and tight musicianship, passionate vocals. Delightful sound. Surprising twists & turns. Uplifting air! Thumbs up! Graham Parker - Waiting for the UFOs (dr wu23): I loved this song for sentimental reasons. Sometimes simplicity is more preferable to sophistication for me. Cat Stevens - Novim's Nightmare (Lewian): A nice emotional song, but not made me feel some special feelings. Stevens' singing... Not really my thing. The part between 2:57 and 3:05 made me say: "WTF?" Fleetwood Mac - Bermuda Triangle (cstack3): A striking visual in the cover. A nice, authentic song with a tranquil country air. The monotonous vocals fit very well to the overall structure of the song. I wouldn't wan to hear shrieks and screams in this song. I liked this a lot. Marek Bilinskiki & Bank Opowiesci kosmiczne (Hrychu): The sound is bad. Dunno if related to Youtube or the recording. Also the mix is... weird. Sometimes it gets annoying. It is understandable though. A live recording from the early '80s... A nice song, if I overlook the sound.
And those that made it to my podium are:
1-) Eugenio Finardi - Extraterrestre (jamesbaldwin) 2-) Comet is Coming - Journey Through the Asteroid Belt (suitkees) 3-) Billy Thorpe - Children of the Sun (mathman0806)

@JD: You gotta allow multiple votes here.

As always, tough to decide! Fun topic and wide-ranging (as should be expected, it's space, after all) selections. Thanks to JD, Lorenzo and George, as always, of course. I will vote on the other two once we can vote multiple times, but am putting in my #1 choice.
1. Mike:Gorillaz “Every Planet We Reach is Dead” Any of yours would have been a contender for me, this time, as I'd stated earlier. But this won won hands down for me of my Top 3.
2. Christian:Cat Stevens “Novim's
Nightmare” Almost made #1, but I just loved that Gorillaz piece, for sheer inventiveness.
3. Hiram:Tuomari Nurmio “Punainen
Planeetta” I enjoyed the bemusement in the vocal and the slightly wonky sound of the song. Sort of a Lost In Space comedic bent to it.
If you'd chosen differently, these three would also have been in contention:
Shadowyzard: Celestial Asylum “Sumeria, Realm of the
Gods”
George:The Tubes “Space Baby”
Anders: Einstürzende Neubauten “Total Eclipse of the Sun”

I read it that we only vote for one choice this round.
Three of these I knew well -- the Klaus Nomi, Air, and Cat Stevens tracks.
My vote goes to Gnags - Fra en Fremmed Planet.
I will decide on the other two at a later date if JD requests more than one choice.

I forgot, very used to the top 3 idea. No problem, then, #1 is still #1, after all. Thanks for reminding us, Logan.

I like the idea of three votes, but I think that being able to play around with the rules makes this series more interesting.

I do worry about you sometimes. In the film, which is one of my very favourite films of the past decade, it is
"she" who is the alien and luring men for sinister reasons.
A divisive film I should read the novel that it's based on.

I suggested "Bermuda Triangle" so I had better vote for it!
