To explain: A guy named Rich Zabriskie was involved in the production overview of "World Record" by Van der Graaf Generator; the credits on the album list him as Rich "What's the point?" Zabriskie (an allusion to the movie "Zabriskie Point"). "Was ist der Punkt?" is German for "What's the point?". Peter Hammill is, among other things, credited as playing "Wasistderpunktenbacker" in the liner notes. Now if we replace "Wasistderpunkt" with "Rich" we get "Richenbacker", which with a slight spell correction becomes "Rickenbacker". So via this complicated wordplay we can assume Peter Hammill plays Rickenbacker guitar on the album.

For listening whatever sounds good in the hands of the given player.

For playing a Fender Telecaster. And it doesn't even have to be a proper Fender, Squier is as good.

I simply don't have any idea what guitar sounds the best, but Gibson Les Paul is the best for my viewing pleasure. So elegant and classy.

Based on what the big six prog bands play. And that is what matters, aye? Wink

Bob Fripp - Gibson
Steve Hackett - Gibson
Martin Barre - Gibson
Greg Lake - Gibson
Steve Howe - Gibson
David Gilmour - Fender

But for listening and playing I prefer Fender.

Nohjindijcrackycracky was a roadie of VdGG; I have forgotten what his real name was.

I honestly think we inhabit quite separate prog planets!

Not nesser-celery - had I meant this to be a prog specific discussion I'd have shoved it in Prog Polls instead of in here!

Fender. I'm not a huge fan of Gibson's shapes plus they're quite pricy, or dare I say, overpriced.

Also, in terms of quality, Fender guitars, even the Mexican line.... heck even the friggin import guitars like Squiers.... are just impossible to top. :)

And with Epiphone, it's a lottery.

BTW, Rickenbackers are indeed associated with prog but from what I've heard they're even more overpriced than Gibsons. And in Poland, they're SUPER RARE.

Hi,

Not sure ... but I miss my EB-0 (the original) with the pegs going backwards instead of sideways ... for some reason it had a stronger sound than the other versions that sound bad and cheap. I do miss, NOW, my Fender Jazz Bass ... since anything I have gotten has not been good enough on my hands, and the Gibby's bass versions turned into cheap crap and over priced stuff that can only come close to the original quality and sound when a mountain of electronics are added.

I can't speak about lead guitars ... to me they all sound great and good, and I don't know enough about them to tell you which one I like more. But in a variety of hands, mannnnnn do they sound great!

I don’t really care as long as the guitarist can play. Either way you can make any electric guitar sound like a Fender or Gibson. Cue pick-ups and perhaps a bit of wah.
I love how most musicians I know wouldn’t be able to hear a difference in a blindtest, providing we’re talking the same pick-ups and whatnot.....yet keep on buying the pricey stuff.
I figure it’s a penis thing
