He was the worst of the BBC Radio 1 DJ's though. There were quite a few in the seventies that were well up on their prog rock but he definitely wasn't one of them! (BTW the first time I heard ELP was when 'The Hairy Cornflake' Dave Lee Travis played Hoedown. That changed my life Wink )

^^ I like Steve Wright - despite him not knowing the difference between Yes and the Strawbs - and I still listen to him occasionally on his BBC Radio 2 afternoon show.

I used to listen to The Hairy Cornflake too, until he famously resigned live on air.

1973: The Six Wives of Henry VIII
1976: No Earthly Connection  and
1975: The Myths and Legends of King Arthur....

Thanks David. Compiling and listening to Rick Wakeman's impressive discography kept me busy for the first three weeks of this year, but it was great fun - apart from having to listen to Rick's bizarre collaboration with Norman Wisdom, obviously.  Tongue

Having catalogued Rick Wakeman's entire staggering discography of 107 albums, Logan's recent "Favourite Concerts" thread has inspired me to search out some of Rick's classic concerts from yesteryear, starting with the epic Journey to the Centre of the Earth concert with the English Rock Ensemble, recorded at the magnificent Royal Festival Hall, London, back in 1974, and if you think that was a lavishly-expensive, over-the-top production, then you haven't seen King Arthur on Ice! Tongue

There's no existing footage of the original Journey to the Centre of the Earth concert, other than a very poor quality recording from Toronto in 1974.

That's quite a line-up! This is the famous (or notorious) concert that takes Progressive Rock to new levels of pomposity, grandiosity and magnificent excess which almost ruined Rick Wakeman's health and career, not to mention his bank balance. Stern Smile

Rick's Perspective:-

"Back in the early 80s, a wonderful TV series called A Little Night Music, filmed in Birmingham had quite an assortment of musical styles over the weeks that the series ran.
The performance was recorded live at Pebble Mill in Birmingham and a small budget was given to me to do some orchestrations for the additional orchestral musicians that were booked to perform with me. A children’s choir was also brought in for Bedtime Stories, but they were perhaps a little too young and brings to mind the well known saying “Never work with children or animals”! Whilst they were very angelic and looked great, trying to get them to sing at the same time proved virtually impossible, but the piece certainly ended up with a lot of charm."

You don't have to be of a religious persuasion to enjoy this heaven-sent concert, but it certainly helps if you are. Smile
