Subject: Rick Wakeman: The Caped Crusader of Prog

Rick Wakeman's scintillating Piano Vibrations and stunning keyboard wizardly have been entertaining and enthralling us now for half a century. He's almost as legendary in modern times as The Six Wives of Henry VIII were in Tudor times. Let's Journey to the Centre of the Earth with Rick and explore some of the Myths and Legends of his incredible career. Some of the myths surrounding Rick Wakeman may have No Earthly Connection with reality, but that's how prog legends are created. His symphonic masterpieces have all the magnificent majesty of the towering White Rock of the Matterhorn, and for any self-respecting YES fan not to have at least one Rick Wakeman album in their collection is *almost* as embarrassing as admitting to a past Criminal Record. As we listen again to Rick's rapturous Rhapsodies, it's as well to remember that The Burning issue in 1984 for Rock & Roll Prophet Rick Wakeman was whether he'd ever make any profit again after staging the spectacular King Arthur on Ice in 1975 at enormous expense during an increasing Cost of Living crisis.
All Rick Wakeman albums Highlighted in sequential order of release.

Rick Wakeman is one of progressive rock's brightest lights. I haven't watched the video of that concert, but I will, and soon!

I'm watching it right now and it's just as good as any Yes concert I've ever seen.
I only discovered Rick Wakeman's "Made in Cuba" concert on YouTube today, and I thought why am I sitting here through this endless stream of YouTube ads which are ruining the concert, when I could be sharing the concert with my friends on ProgArchives and watching it totally ad-free.

Have you watched the 2001 Live in Buenos Aires concert with Rick & Adam on keyboards, and Damian Wilson on lead vocals? It was also released on DVD. So much Caped goodness! 'Boards galore!

There was actually a book about Rick Wakeman called the caped crusader.

I never knew that, although it seemed like the obvious title for a Rick Wakeman tribute thread.

Wakeman is one of my very favourite artists, and has some of my favourite albums indeed. I would actually rank more Wakeman albums with 5 stars than Yes albums. One thing I admire of his live shows is that he usually adapts the music he's choosing to be played with what he has available in the band, and won't use overdubs to fill in orchestrations or choirs or whatever (I think that Made in Cuba is one of the exceptions, though, using tapes for the choirs from Cathedral in the Sky).

I once made a 4 hour round trip by car to see his 'stand up' show on a school night . Great musician and great personality. His stories about touring in the seventies are absolutely hilarious. The man that put the 'fun' into prog for sure!

The highlight of the Cuban show for me was where Rick took his keytar out into the audience and then brought a girl back up on stage with him. It gave the Cuban security guy a bit of a scare though.

Wakeman rules...but I actually think Moraz was a better fit for Yes!

For some reason, I think Rick Wakeman's talent, contributions, personality were at the core of what made YES fantastic in the first place. It doesn't mean I don't respect Squire-Anderson-Howe LLP, of course I do and would never replace them... but Rick's shining moments elevated already great music to stratosphere. Sounds he created made YES music twice as picturesque, imo.
And his no-nonsense, a bit of a jerk attitude balanced things out a bit I'm sure! I believe they made a mistake in 1973 with Topographics dominated by Jon and Steve ideas; if Rick had more say in it, we'd get more of his solos perhaps... or reduced length at least.
It's great he came back for GFTO, as well as briefly in the 90s, this is the go-to keyboard wizard for Yes... and his 70s output rivals Hackett and the best in the genre (Wives, Journey, Myths, Connection and Criminal). I also have a soft spot for https://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=4611" rel="nofollow - Wakeman With Wakeman: Romance of the Victorian Age (1994). A bit quiet and simplistic, but atmosphere is great.
Feel free to recommend me his lesser known albums

Considering how many albums he's made, this should have been much longer.

I'm seen with Jon Anderson and on a solo tour, he is indeed a very funny man. His story about being mistaken for Richard Clayderman is a classic, as was his reference to the well-known Yes song "Owner of a Horse and Cart".

I'd love to recommend some of Rick's lesser-known albums, but so far, I only have his classic 1970's albums in a 5-CD box set. I'm hoping to discover a lot more Rick Wakeman albums though, now I've started this tribute thread.

I can remember as an ELP fan being quite annoyed when I heard Rick's Six Wives for the first time (on headphones over at a friends place circa 1977) . Nailed it.
Of course they were the two that got all the attention in those days as both were incredibly flamboyant and helped raise prog rock in the general consciousness. They both had ever expanding keyboard rigs to match their ever expanding egos it seemed. While Keith was doing stuff with an orchestra in ELP , Rick was doing Judas Iscariot with a choir. They never understood the idea of 'small' that for certain. I would say Rick was the better player but Emerson's excellent Piano Concerto was never quite matched by Wakeman for pure creativity I feel. Overall its a score draw although Emerson's general influence within Rock Music (not just prog) was much greater that's for sure.

I was watching a very average movie last night called Bullet to Beijing with Michael Caine ruining the iconic Harry Palmer character. The redeeming feature was Rick did the score for the movie.

Starting tomorrow (New Year's Day), I'll be embarking on an epic Journey to the Centre of Rick Wakeman's humungous discography, listening to and rating each and every album along the way, and also offering Rick's own candid and humorous perspective on each of his albums, taken from his website, Rick's Place.
Piano Vibrations (1971) - Unofficial release: not considered a Rick Wakeman album, even by Rick himself.
Rick's Perspective
"This was never meant to be a solo album and to be honest I certainly don't count it as a solo album in any respect. True it is a piece of history, but not one I'm proud of."
"I was actually booked to play piano on a session at Pye Studios in London's Marble Arch and it was to play on some backtracks for an unknown singer who was due in later that week to put his vocals on."
"Shortly afterwards I started having some success with Strawbs and the next thing we knew was that the album was being put out by PYE Records as "Piano Vibrations" with no vocalist and with a picture of me on the back."
"I was unhappy and A&M Records, who had Strawbs and myself signed, were furious."
"I received £9 for my trouble."
Rick's Verdict
"If you're in to collecting nostalgia and history then this is for you. If you are a music lover however then save your money!"

The Six Wives of Henry VIII (1973) - Rick Wakeman's magnificent official debut album, which sounds even better today in 2021.
Rick's Perspective
"Much has been documented about this album so it's difficult to say anything new except that the stinking reviews it got when it came out really hurt me. Also the fact that A&M records hated it didn't help. I felt very much alone with this album until help came in the form of Tony Burdfield and Terry O'Neill at A&M who actually liked it because it was different and worked their socks off to give it a fair hearing."
Rick's Verdict
"I'm very proud of this album and all who played their part in recording it and making it a success."

Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1974) - The first Rick Wakeman album I ever bought back in the mid-1970's.
Rick's Perspective
"Little known fact but I had to mortgage and sell nearly everything I owned in order to make this album as I only had £4,000 from A&M to pay towards it. In fact that is one of the reasons it was recorded live as I just couldn't afford to record it in the studio. On the day of the live concert I received a writ for non payment of my milk bill by the Express Dairy."
"The original music was written to be much longer as well, but had to be severely edited to make it shorter to perform live so that it would fit on two sides of the album!!! And what happened to the edited music? Well suffice to say that throughout three divorces much has been lost!"
"The concert was recorded on 16 track tape and basically there was spillage onto all the tracks from everything. The Battle suffered the most as some terrible wrong notes, bad playing and a horrendous buzz made quite a substantial section completely unusable. It was not possible to re-record either and match sounds and so a chunk of the piece was copied and used twice, hence for the astute listener, there is a verse section of completely wrong lyrics."
Rick's Verdict
"One up for musicians. A&M in England hated it and didn't want to release it. The issue on finally releasing it was forced through by A&M in America."

The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table (1975) - My all-time favourite Rick Wakeman album.
Rick's Perspective
"This is in many ways a musical autobiography. Much was written in my head whilst lying in Wexham Park Hospital after my first minor heart attack. The Last Battle I wrote after being advised by the specialist, in front of my management, that he recommended I stopped playing and retired in order to give myself a chance of a reasonable recovery."
"I was 25."
"Thankfully I ignored the advice, wrote The Last Battle that night, and carried on. Heart surgery has come a long way since the mid seventies as well thankfully!"
Rick's Verdict
"A very hard album for me to listen to as I can hear the real story within the music. Having said that I think the main theme is probably the best I have written and I am genuinely quite proud of it."

Lisztomania (soundtrack) (1975) - A much better album than expected, especially after what Rick said about it.
Rick's Perspective
"This album stinks!"
"At the time I was having a huge run in with A&M records and their hierarchy would do anything possible to try and disrupt what I was trying to do. It was not an easy time."
"I delivered the finished soundtrack album and it was immediately thrown back in my face and a deal was done directly with the film company to take the tapes and do what they wanted with them, which was a complete disaster in my eyes."
"The album flopped dismally and I was furious because it was my name on the front cover."
Rick's Verdict
"Unless you're a serious collector, don't waste your money."

Not likely, especially not with Rick Wakeman. I generally listen to at least six prog albums a day, so there's still one more album to come today, and this is the best one yet, in my opinion.
Live at the Empire Pool, Wembley: King Arthur on Ice (1975) - Simply the best, better than all the rest!
Rick's Perspective
"There were just three performances of King Arthur on Ice and it was “crucified” by most of the media before it had even had its opening night! Amazingly though, the demand from the press and media for tickets was unprecedented and which was met with a total refusal to all who had “pre-reviewed” the event! It was undoubtedly for me, a high point of my musical career. I was pleased with the music and to this day feel that the main theme is probably the best I have written and will be hard to surpass. The shows were just great fun and were put on with virtually no outside assistance as very few people believed in it and indeed wanted it to happen. Numerous people, who will remain nameless, tried in vain to get me to do a basic show at the Royal Albert Hall and to “forget all this nonsense about an ice show”! Ice skating was not popular back in 1975 and so I enlisted the help of some of the world’s greatest skaters from all over the world. To the best of my knowledge it was also the first time a PA of that size had been “hung” in a venue the size of Wembley Arena. I shipped in a Clair Brothers system from America as there was nothing in the UK that could handle the task. Thanks to people like Tony Burdfield at A&M Records, my band, the conductor David Measham and the English Chamber Choir, and the foresight of Alan Yentob, who filmed much of the show for the BBC, the memory still lives on. …And my thoughts now? I’d just love to do it one more time!!!"

Great to see all this reviews, I just would like to see more of your own views on the albums. I remember checking this reviews from Wakeman himself years ago when I was getting to know his music. I still remember one of those (though I don't remember for which album, surely one I haven't heard, actually) that I thought was really funny. He just said "To be brutally honest, I don't remember recording this".

About the Arthur album, it's also my favourite, and making a play list for my IPod combining the original, and a few songs from the new re-recording has made my enjoyment of the album even greater. About the Live at Wembley version, I was slightly disappointed, since they didn't play the whole thing... at least there was some technical issue or something, and the title song is incomplete, and that's my very favourite song from the album, and from Wakeman in general, so that was indeed a letdown. And the sound quality isn't that great, either. I would like to mention a little piece in the album, not within the Arthur section, but before he started to play the album, Lamobak's March, which is really a short piece (which continues into a piece I don't really like), the thing is, I really liked what he was doing there, and I wish he had taken it when he was making the re-recording of the album, and that he might have reworked it and expanded it into one of the new full songs of the album.

It's funny that Rick Wakeman was brutally honest with his review of Lisztomania when he said "This album stinks", whereas I really like Lisztomania and most of the reviews I've read for the album have been generally positive too. I'm looking forward to checking out The Real Lisztomania (2002), although that won't be for a good while yet, as I've only just reached the year 1976 in Rick's humongously long discography.
No Earthly Connection (1976) - An album that's either loved or hated according to Rick. Well, I love it!
Rick's Perspective
"I truly believe there is life apart from that on earth and also that there are many other unknown dimensions as well and that's what this album was all about. Unfortunately the press thought I'd gone off my rocker and sl*g.ed it off. A&M records held emergency meetings because of poor sales - 4,000,000 plus as it happens!!"
Rick's Verdict
"Full of recording techniques and production that were way ahead of its time and the album has created more controversy than any other album I have made . It's either loved or hated."

Live at the Maltings, Farnham (1976) - A very good quality Old Grey Whistle Test recording, considering the concert dates back 45 years.
Rick's Perspective
"This was indeed a very interesting filming as the show was recorded at the Maltings in Farnham in the early evening and was actually broadcast that same evening around 11pm. There is very little on film that includes the brass section of Reg Brooks and the late Martyn Shields and so it was a time when the ERE was going through quite a metamorphism with a new guitar player as well in John “Dusty” Dunsterville, who was a very funny guy in many respects and his rendition, (and altered lyrics), of the Johnny Cash classic, “I Walk The Line” was a regular occurrence on stage and indeed appears toward the end of this concert too!"

White Rock (soundtrack) (1977) - The towering title track is a mountainous tour de force of sheer keyboard wizardry.
Rick's Perspective
"In many ways another album ahead of its time, mainly due to the tremendous foresight of the late Michael Samuelson who produced the film of the Winter Olympics in 1976 and decided that he was fed up with hearing orchestral music or brass band music on sports films and that it was time for rock and roll to make an entry. By telling me this was what he wanted he gave me the opportunity to pave the way for all sports films from that day on, and all television sport, to look at music differently."
Rick's Verdict
"The percussion on this album is outstanding. Remember there were no boxes of tricks in those days. What you hear is what was played. All credit to Tony Fernandez."

Review by Tim Boudewijn van der Wart on 30th March 2002:-
"Yet another great masterpiece from the maestro. The Loser is the one of the most beautiful Wakeman tracks ever, and White Rock is the song the mini-moog was probably invented for! Lax’x is a very abstract and complex composition, very good though. Searching for gold is also very good, it has a catchy chorus; the entire album can be called brilliant if you ask me. There is lots of piano and organ use, also is there a good choir. Among the fast rock pieces there are very beautiful piano compositions enhanced with synths Rick does so amazingly well. In my list the album ranks probably at number two. Such a masterpiece must be possible to play always, and not to be worn out till here are no copies left anymore."

Rick Wakeman's Criminal Record (1977) - A criminally underrated record!
Rick's Perspective
"This was always a loosely based concept album that was recorded in Switzerland with Alan White on drums and Chris Squire on bass. The album never really turned out as I wanted it to except perhaps for the Judas Iscariot track. The drums and bass were recorded after the keyboards and they did such an excellent job that I wanted to redo some of the keyboards again and change a few things I'd played....but there were no tracks left and no money either."
Rick's Verdict
"A "nearly" album. It was intended to be another 6 Wives but for me it never quite made it. Perhaps it was a mistake to try for another such album. Some excellent all round performances though."

Review by Marianne Donnachie on 10th October 2005:-
"How does one describe such a seminal piece of music history? This album has been my all time favourite for many years and for many reasons. The six pieces of musical composition has everything, from the humour of The Breathalyser to the primeval gut wrenching emotion of Judas Iscariot. I defy anyone with a soul to listen to Judas Iscariot and not be moved. The sheer power of the Church Organ and choral vocals make the hairs stand up on your neck. This piece leads one through the betrayal of Christ and to his ultimate crucifixion, portrayed by the popular hymn 'there is a green hill far away without a city wall'. It ends with the moving music depicting Judas Iscariots suicide and his obvious angst and regret. I simply cannot hear this piece and not be absorbed by it. I can only liken it to Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings. It has that sort of power to evoke feelings of longing, of understanding regret. Quite simply moving. Conversely The Breathalyser makes one smile. The car chase reminds me of the old keystone cops music and the choice of Bill Oddie for the vocals is pure genius! The Birdman of Alcatraz is a wonderful piece, Rick accurately has depicted birds in flight so well. Those who know the story will easily recognise the dichotomy of a prisoner and the freedom of birds in flight. Take my advice...listen to Chamber of Horrors in the dark and imagine yourself locked in there after dark, that girl's scream makes me jump every time! Don't analyse this album by genre or even in comparison with Rick's other albums. Just get it! It is simply a work of pure genius. Thanks so much Rick for the many happy hours I’ve had with this masterpiece."

I think the epic Judas Iscariot is by far the best song on Criminal Record, having just heard it for the first time, literally a few minutes ago. It's also a good thing that the best song on Criminal Record is more than twice as long as all of the other tracks on the album. I'll have the Rhapsodies (1979) album coming up around midnight (GMT), if I can stay awake that long.

Yes, I feel privileged to have lived at the same time as all of the living legends of prog, and it's wonderful that Rick is still around, especially bearing in mind he had a heart attack at the age of 25, brought on by the glorious excesses of living life as a rock star.

Rhapsodies (1979) - A diverse double-album that may have been better condensed into a single album.
Rick's Perspective
"This album is probably the most confusing I have ever made. It contains so many differing styles that it is hard to keep track of what the album is all about. A&M decided I had to have a producer and Toni Visconti was brought on board who I got on great with. A&M demanded everything from disco...(please, I know ) and that's how Rhapsody in Blue came about plus all sorts of other styles some of which I loved and some of which I didn't. Great sounds on tracks like March of the Gladiators though."
Rick's Verdict
"Worth buying for the fact that half of the album is what I wanted to do and as it's a double album it's still worth it. The last of my recordings for A&M and the end of an era in many ways."

Review by Robert Nancarrow on 12th March 2015:-
"Whilst this album represents the end of the A&M years, and some people have been rather dismissive, I really like this album. It highlights, even from a relatively young age, Rick's great diversity and his ability to interpret music through a range of styles and genres. I think the fact that he wasn't trying to take himself too seriously was also to his credit. The album gives some sense of what he can deliver through tracks as diverse as Sea Horses, Gladiators and his sublime interpretation of Gershwin’s Summertime. I really enjoyed Credits, the last track, which perfectly captures Rick's essential sense of humour."

Live 1980: Swedish Television Special (1980) - One of the live hidden gems from Rick Wakeman's Video Vaults.
Rick's Perspective
"To be honest, I don’t remember too much about this particular show except that it was a great period in Europe for rock shows on television and it was quite common to be invited to Scandinavia, Italy, Holland and Germany to do live shows which were broadcast on major network channels at prime time. Watching this performance back reminds me just what a fantastic time it was for musicians back then. Interesting to note that two of the band in this performance (Ashley Holt and Tony Fernandez) and still in the English Rock Ensemble today! (The phrase “Gluttons for punishment” springs to mind) and whilst the sound quality is not the greatest in places, it is a very unique recording and piece of film as to the best of my knowledge this is the only record on either film or audio of this particular line-up of the ERE."

The Burning (soundtrack) (1981) - Not as famous as The Exorcist soundtrack, but still just as spooky.
Rick's Perspective
"This is an album of two sides. One side is actually great analogue stuff of arrangements of music taken from the film and the other side is...well, not so hot! Always difficult to produce soundtrack albums as you're trying to please so many people and it's never possible really. It's the only album I used the Prophet 10 keyboard on and so I like it purely for that reason!"
Rick's Verdict
"One for the collectors - but not really anybody else!!"

Review by Mark Ingle on 19th June 2004:-
"The Burning I picked up in a music shop in Sutton Surrey in the 80's and it instantly was a masterpice as far as I was concerned. Their are two sides, one side with the music from the film - the other side is variations and shows Rick at his best on the improvising. I suppose the thing I love about Rick is his ability to imrpvise and make it better than the original and this is a classic example. Although Rick does not rate this as one of his great works - I beg to differ. If you can get hold of 'The Variations' then do, no true Rick collector should miss this track."

1984 (1981) - An epic magical masterpiece with a full orchestra and choir and featuring Jon Anderson & Chaka Khan!
Rick's Perspective
"The wrong album at the wrong time, with all the wrong people around at the time. To do an orchestral rock concept album at a musical time when I probably couldn't even have got a job as a piano tuner was nigh on suicidal. I formed the wrong band, (the worst I have ever had), the deal for the stage show fell through and all in all I listen back to the music with my head in my hands. True there are some good moments, but my personal life was such a mess at the time that I should have run away rather than run into the studio!"
Rick's Verdict
"In retrospect, a mistake. Great lyrics from Tim Rice though and a magical performance from Chaka Khan."

"I, like many others was shocked to read Rick's verdict on this one and again, I couldn't agree less with his own verdict. This is one of those albums that hooked me instantly, for the summer of 2009 I couldn't stop listening to it. It flows nicely and the lyrics are great with the just the right balance of catchy easy to listen to songs and grander arrangements, I'd rate this above most of Rick's albums. Rick, listen to your fans, take pride in this work, we're telling you it's great."

1984: Live at the Hammersmith Odeon (1981) - A good concert, but even by Rick's own admission, not one of his best, and not as good as the "1984" studio album.
Rick's Perspective
"This was a strange era for me. Concept albums and prog rock were at possibly their lowest ebbs and there was I having just recorded a massive concept album, co-written with Tim Rice, and followed it up with a huge prog rock concert at Hammersmith Odeon…..err…..no points Wakeman! Truth was I just wanted to do what I felt I was best at and not tow the fashion line musically. It was a very difficult time in my life. I had lost my father a few months earlier, my 2nd marriage was on the rocks and musically I had no idea what was likely to happen to me in the coming months or years and to top it all, the band proved to be one of the few very unhappy line-ups that I had ever put together, although it has to be said that this concert was certainly a highlight."

Rock 'n' Roll Prophet (1982) - An album with a quirky 80's sound that's reasonably good overall.
Rick's Perspective
"I mentioned the Buggles earlier on and Rock and Roll Prophet was recorded in the late 70's in Switzerland and was meant to be a spoof on them in many ways. I wanted to release it under a different name as my name stunk at the time with the growth of Punk. I wanted it to come out under a band name of KUDOS. This never happened of course and the album remained in moth balls until after 1984 had actually been recorded and released. A big mistake."
Rick's Verdict
"I love the sounds on this album. Very analogue and a pretty decent production too. It was later released as Rock and Roll Prophet Plus with extra tracks."

Cost of Living (1983) - Another mixed bag album with some hidden gems.
Rick's Perspective
"Another nearly album. It has too much variation within the music for me to be really happy about it and again I ended up in a studio that I really didn't like that was picked by the record company at the time and so I couldn't change. There's a mixture of great playing and some very poor playing as well. Most disappointing is the piano sound as the piano in the studio was cheap and nasty. There are a couple of classic tracks on the album though such as Happening Man which I would love to re-record one day."
Rick's Verdict
"If you don't mind skipping a few tracks there are some hidden classics on board this release."
"Not one of Rick's better known albums and yet worth the effort of investigation. This is an album that demonstrates his ability to successfully capture a diverse range of sounds and styles in one session. Where else could you experience the sublime beauty of Thomas Gray's opus next to the hilariously funny Monkey Nuts ! One of the more reflective moments is found with Gone But Not Forgotten, a track inspired by the Falklands conflict. The album marked the end of his short lived association with Charisma records and perhaps has failed to secure the recognition it truly deserves. Try it - if you like Rick you won't regret it!"

Rick's Perspective
"Another soundtrack album and not bad as soundtrack albums go. It's a shame DVD wasn't about at the time as it would have made a nice sporting DVD release. It was always a pleasure to work with Mike Samuelson the producer and Tony Maylam the director. It was recorded in the worst studio I have ever worked in in my life. Crimes of Passion (soundtrack) (1984) - An upbeat Pop/Rock album, and pretty good as soundtrack albums go.
Rick's Perspective
"A very messy soundtrack is all I can really say. Certainly there is some good playing and one or two really classy tracks, but once again, like all soundtracks it suffers from cohesion in order to satisfy all the parties concerned with the film."

Silent Nights (1985) - Another Pop/Rock album which represents a major departure from Rick's earlier Symphonic Prog epics.
Rick's Perspective
"Written and recorded during what I lovingly refer to as "My Great Unwanted Period", as whatever musically I tried at the time was received with total disinterest by media and press alike! In fact I was so fed up at the time that I even turned half the songs into Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band type of efforts. "Ghost of a Rock and Roll Star" and "The Dancer" being classic examples. Then in contrast there are prog rock tracks such as The Opera and then of course the almost poppy Silent Nights track. Confused? I was!"
Rick's Verdict
"If you want to hear what I was recording when I was somewhat confused as to what direction to go in, then this is the album for you."
"Most songs on this album are quite straightforward melodic rock. Not many classical influences here compared with Rick's other work. Musically unadventurous with a weak production."

Live at Hammersmith (1985) - A true return to form with four symphonic epics from the previous decade given an 80's makeover.

"A pretty half decent live album in as much as it as least an honest appraisal of how my live performances were at that time. Not much else to say about it really. I thought the cover was dreadful when I first saw it, but after all these years I have warmed a little to it's "dreadfulness"!"

"This was an album I never wanted to do. In truth at the time I desperately needed the money. Times were really difficult and sales of my albums had hit rock bottom. I was offered £5,000 to make a "new age" piano album and so I went for some long walks in the country and came up with the music. I recorded it over two days at a cost of £2,000 and kept the balance to pay off some very pressing bills. "I was surprised to note Rick's comment that this wasn't an album that he wanted to record. On hearing it, on its release in 1986, I was overwhelmed by its lightness of touch and its ability to evoke vivid images. In some senses, it seemed a particularly mature undertaking and demonstrated Rick's undoubted talent as a musician and composer. The subtle tones of" Ducks and Drakes" and " Waterfalls" evoke memories of childhood. My favourite track is "Wild Moors", which whilst quite short, seems to run the full range of emotions and captures the essential sense of Rick's prodigious talent. Take my advice, if you haven't yet heard this album, try it, you won't be disappointed."

A quick story from Rick's first Grumpy volume:
Country Airs was a hit and it did top the UK new age album chart. "Waterfalls" sort of became an unofficial "hit single."
Rick performed an intimate concert that featured only himself on keyboard and a chum on guitar. In the front row were seated a bunch of bikers!
When the show ended and they took their bow, one of the biker toughs actually leaned over and grabbed Rick's arm and told him "Waterfalls" was his favorite tune, and were they going to play it?
Well, naturally, Rick obliged; thus, "Waterfalls" was the night's encore!

The Family Album (1987) - A playful electric piano tribute to Rick Wakeman's extended family, including his pets!
Rick's Perspective
"An album that I can't play now as it is full of so much sadness for me. When it was first recorded it was all about everybody in my family and life that meant everything to me. Now, many have passed on or have proven not to be the great loves I believed them to be at the time. Knowing what I know now I would never have made this album."
Rick's Verdict

"One of my favorite CDs from the maestro. It is full of musical textures, ranging from slow moody tempos to fast upbeat phrases. Wakeman's writing trademark abound in every song... slowly constructing melodic themes, then making variations and finally resolving each song with beautiful mastery. It was very interesting (altogether highly shocking) to read Mr. Wakeman's opinion on the album, which tells how big of a sensitive genius he is. Thank you for the music!"

^I know the music industry is a notoriously tough business, but it's sad to hear that even such an esteemed and successful artist as Rick Wakeman was struggling to make a living in the mid-1980's. I'm sure he must be a multi-millionaire by now though, and deservedly so too, after keeping us all entertained with over half a century of great music, both as a solo artist and with the Strawbs and Yes.
The Gospels (1987) - Hallelujah! A religiously-themed symphonic epic with narration by Robert Powell (who once played the part of Jesus Christ!)
Rick's Perspective
"Why oh why did I let myself agree to making albums on budgets woefully lower than necessary to make a good finished article. This is the worst example of my falling into this trap. I so wanted to record this music but had little or no money to do it with and the end result, although deeply from the heart, is dreadfully recorded and mixed. Thank heavens I was able to rectify it at a later date."
Rick's Verdict
"A bit of Wakeman history and that's about all."

Review by Levente Toth on 21st April 1997:-
"A quite innovative, daring and undeniably successful musical experiment based on the four Gospels. Blending synths, choir, Ramon Remedios' tenor vocals, Robert Powell's tranquil narration, it reflects the mood of a serene church reunion. With well-controlled emotional charge, it passes from moments of inner calm to passages of intense dramatic beauty."

Time Machine (1988) - One of Rick's "forgotten" 1980's Pop/Rock albums, which contains some pretty good songs, making it a worthy addition to any Rick Wakeman fan's collection.
Rick's Perspective
"The original deal for this album was with Polydor records, who just as I finished the album had a change of Chairman who told me he hated the idea, hated me and hated the music and was not going to release it. I tried to buy the album back but he refused. Six months later he sold it to President Records. Amazingly enough the album got pretty good reviews but it suffered through my being about as popular as a skunk in a perfume factory at the time and disappeared into oblivion."
Rick's Verdict
"I think some of the songwriting on this album is some of the best I have ever written. Ocean City and Custer's last Stand are two of my favourites and Ice is for me the best overall song I have ever written. Worth having in my book!!!"

Review by Tatiana P. Wakeman on 7th January 1998:-
"Time Machine shows the influence of the 80s music in Rick's style. This is an album which has got one of the best moments from the keyboard wizard, and for the ones that haven't listened to the album, you should try to listen to songs like Ice, Angel of Time, Make me a Woman and Custer's Last Stand. Here comes a great album with great performances and great songs for people who like Rick's rock songs."

"Ice" is a good song, I thought I recognised it. I've got it on a "Yes and Friends" compilation somewhere.

^ It's good to see that Ice is one of Rick's favourite songs too. I like every Rick Wakeman album I've heard so far, including Rock & Roll Prophet, which has a dismal rating on ProgArchives.
A Suite of Gods (with Ramon Remedios) (1988) - Rick Wakeman's first classical excursion, and it's an opera, but not as we know it.
Rick's Perspective
"This for me is a little masterpiece. It was recorded in the mid eighties and used one of the first computer recording packages that was about as stable as Iraq. The software was very primitive and crashed at regular intervals. All the sounds were keyboard created with the exception of the percussion which again although played by Tony Fernandez, was in fact electronic. The vocals were some of the best ever recorded by Ramon Remedios and all in all I was very proud of this album and only wish it could have been performed live."
Rick's Verdict
"I would dearly have loved to have recorded this with an orchestra but there was not the finance in place to do this. An album worth having...well in my opinion anyway!"

Review by Norman Hansen on 1st June 2014:-
"Of the 52 albums I own from Rick, this I must say is the most beautiful. Not everyone, RW fan or not, can enjoy opera but this has the magic touch by Rick and tenor Ramon Remidios. "Giants roaming with a single eye". What a lyric. I think it's a classic. From creation to padamonium to the flood to hero's' it covers all of that era gone by. A must for true fans."

Zodiaque (with Tony Fernandez) (1988) - A magical New Age mystery tour through the twelve signs of the zodiac.
Rick's Perspective
"An interesting album all based around the rhythmic ideas of Tony Fernandez. Very simple in many respects it has a lot of very interesting nuances hidden within the music and the more you listen to it, the more you can hear."
Rick's Verdict
"If you like your music as a cross between New Age and Chill Out, then this is for you."

Review by Sergey Lenkov on 4th May 2003:-
"Very unusual record. Imagine: Milt Jackson and Modern Jazz Quartet finished their work and left the studio. Here comes Rick and Tony. They listened to MJQ and they began to play, but they did something different. It’s a jazz record not in style of music (let’s call it instrumental art-rock with a little touch of New Age), but in another sense: the album is a kind of dialog between keyboard player and drummer. It seems that not many overdubs were made there. And the mood in this record is a little bit darker than usually on Rick’s albums."

The Word and the Gospels (1988) - Magnificent! Magical! Majestic! An operatic masterpiece in what must have been a very busy year for Rick Wakeman, with his fourth album release of 1988. The album was performed live in Israel with eloquent narration by Robert Powell.
Rick's Perspective
"Originally recorded in Israel with a full orchestra and narration by Robert Powell the only tragedy is that I had not rewritten it before this filming took place. When the ultimate DVD is filmed of the New Gospels then certainly elements of this one will be incorporated as part of the music's history."
Rick's Verdict
"Wait for the ultimate DVD."

Review by Julia Harries on 11th November 2000:-
"Open this video with a fabulous Rodney Matthews cover and you have a live performance recorded in an outdoor amphitheatre in Caesarea, Israel in 1988. It starts at sunset and the backdrop to the performance is a tranquil beach. Rick, soberly dressed in a black suit and wing collar shirt with sparkly dicky bow, looks really great and the performance is lovely. The story of Jesus Christ is narrated capably by Robert Powell both live and in the intercut scenes out and about in the Holy Land. This gives the video an interesting dimension and adds texture to the musical performance. Rick performs with the Israel Symphony Orchestra, the Eton College Chapel Choir and Ramon Remedios and the whole show is delightful. Regulars David Paton and Tony Fernandez are also in evidence. There are good shots of Rick playing and although his performance in this show is obviously more restrained than his rock shows, it's good to see him perform in this style. Highlights for me are the charming "Welcome a Star", Rick's great twiddly bits in the style we know and love on "The Baptism", "The Lords Prayer" which Ramon Remedios does brilliantly and "Children of Mine" which combines a terrific melody with great playing by Rick and vocals by Ramon."

I think he actually releases new albums faster than you could add them to this thread. He's already released 14 so far today and it's only just lunchtime.

Wow! There's also a guitarist called Buckethead who's released a phenomenally long list of albums, although you'd be hard-pressed to find any of them in the shops.

Rick Wakeman & Mario Fasciano - Black Knights at the Court of Ferdinand IV (1989) - Rick ventures into Rock Progressivo Italiano territory with a Neapolitan Sundae of different musical styles.
Rick's Perspective
"The whole idea of this recording was to merge the wonderful melodies of the Neapolitan style from southern Italy, so melodic and romantic, with prog rock type of arrangements. I thoroughly enjoyed making this album although I was not happy with the mixes that I felt could have had better results if it had been mixed using a food blender."
Rick's Verdict
"If you understand Neapolitan Italian, then this is for you!"

Review by Armando Betancourt on 15th July 1997:-
"Rick's Third Royal Masterpiece. Lyrics in Italian (not included, unfortunately!), and excitingly close to the very best Italian progressive bands. In a rock trio format, Rick gives ample space to guitars and singer/drummer participation. Half of the tracks are great instrumentals. In a league by itself, "Black Knights..." shouldn't be overlooked!"

Do him after Phrozenlight then!
This is great work Paul, thanks for this. The only problem is I keep reading about albums of his I'd never heard of, then going to check them on Spotify only to find they're not on there. Just listening to the Planets at the moment.
