That's exactly how I have it. I have Pentangle/Jacqui McShee's Pentangle, Steeleye, Fairport, Stealers, Jethro, Strawbs and so on and on all grouped together and then I just let them play random. I never know what comes up next but they all fit pretty well together and provide enough variety within the Genre to keep it interesting for a very long time (days and days). I pretty much do that for all the groupings by the mood I am in.

I'm quite ignorant about Zappa and later KC. I'm currently digging Zappa more deeply. I must say that it's only a question of time. One life is not enough to listen carefully to everything.

I really believe that 2000+ prog is better than most of the 70s prog.

I don't get the Zappa craze. Love the guy as a person but barely stand his music.

I like BOTH of your guys' thinking! I've been trying to make a case for this viewpoint ever since I learned in 2008 that PROG IS ALIVE AND WELL IN THE 21ST CENTURY!!! |

I hold Breathless as a top 5 Camel album, number 5 to be exact
Starcastle is a great band, especially their second record Fountains of Light. Very uplifting and incredibly melodic. I'm lowkey a fan of Styx. They were and important stepping stone/gateway band for me for prog, and I honestly think their record from 2017 "The Mission" is one of their most progressive, and all around strongest records of their career. I rank it at two typically, but sometime it takes the crown. The Missing Piece and Civilian are good records, Interview is as good as the run of albums that came before it Ted Leonard Spock's Beard is the best Spock's Beard, but that's not to put down the other frontmen I don't enjoy Zappas more comedy oriented material, it can be fun, but it just gets a little annoying and tiring for me pretty quickly This could always change though I like a Dramatic Turn of Events more than Scenes From a Memory, even though the latter I would say is objectively the better record. I live for the electronic side of Krautrock/German 70's electronic, but no shame there, it's just hard to show my friends some of that stuff! Though I like some select songs, Gong is one of a very small number of beloved prog and popular 70s rock bands in general that just hasn't resonated with me on a full album basis, despite being a big Hillage fan. I believe the true roots of prog metal lie in death metal and technical death metal bands like Atheist, Cynic, Pestilence and slightly unrelated, Voivod. Fates Warning and Dream Theater can get credit for honing in a cleaner style of prog metal however. Songs From the Wood and Heavy Horses>Thick as a Brick and Aqualung Thrak is my 4th favorite Crimson album, sometimes third Bundles is my favorite soft machine album by a good margin

i'm not a massive rush fan but I do like a lot of their music. Couldn't escape it as tow of my brothers thought they were the greatest. Just can't get into VdGG. The biggest reason for my distaste are the vocalists. Lee I can tolerate but not Hamill. True I haven't listened to a ton of VdGG but I never felt the need to.

Since we're on the subject of VDGG, an embarrassing admission: I much prefer the albums by Discipline, who are thought to be acolytes. VDGG's music I find very difficult, but Discipline's is like ear candy to me.

I would contest that last comment (if we're talking Zappa). But I'm only 23, so I can keep listening in and picking apart those ZFT releases for years to come. That's my thing though. I like the hidden riffs, conceptual continuity inside jokes, and repurposed compositions. It's cool that you're checking him out. It took me a bit to get into him. But while I was only intrigued by a small portion of his work at first, now I enjoy a good majority of it. In any case, I don't think it's embarrassing to enjoy or not enjoy Zappa. And I trust that more people here actually went into his stuff with an open mind and an awareness of the context of his music and messages, as opposed to many others I've heard who "gave it a try."

Mine is that I would love Yes except that Steve Howe's guitar work grates on me. It's that lightweight sound, which I feel should be more distorted with the booming bass and keyboards happening at the same time, plus it's the interminable fiddle-fiddle-stop, fiddle-fiddle stop of his guitar solos and riffs.
I find Hackett much more varied and listenable.

The diversity in the music, all the different directions that progressive music has gone to are both fascinating and mind-blowing, with a load of masterpieces. However, when putting this output next to the classic 60s and 70s prog, I cannot really convince myself that it is necessarily 'better'. One thing that is certain for me, is that the 2000s (+2010s) are the second strongest decade for progressive rock after the 70s! Is it actually better? I don't really know, I enjoy both more than anything else, so I will just keep listening. Edited by A Crimson Mellotron - May 10 2021 at 03:42 |

Yea, I have not been embarrassed about anything I have posted on this thread.......I also don't care for Steve Howe's playing style, it's not that I hate it, it's more that it draws no attention to my ear other than it is very steely sound, there is no meat or thickness at times with his signature sound.
