I'm actually not that into Zappa outside of the instrumentals. "Peaches en Regalia" was the first track to make me interested in Frank Zappa (used to hear it regularly on a classic rock radio station), and the next one of his that I heard and loved is Imaginary Diseases. (I still find this to be an absolute joy to listen to) I never fully got into FZ. And this is no Prog secret, but I have never really "got" Yes' album Close to the Edge other than the title track. |

Hi, FZ is an acquired taste, and one that is difficult to get into ... most folks get into the rock stuff (OS) and then all of a sudden they hear HR and ... you don't know what to make of the whole thing. And then, if you are crazy enough you watch 200 Motels and wonder ... is this guy for real, or just a loon on the loose? One example I like to show folks is the live version of 200 Motels done at UCLA (I think) before Gayle (his wife) passed away and towards the end, you hear a complete choir do the whole ending ... and all of a sudden ... it's like the choir is saying ... finally we get something worth doing, instead of the schmaltzy and sometimes stupid use of the choirs in most compositions ... they are not there for music, they are there for background ... a sort of colored scrim on the back of the stage kind of thing ... but you get the feeling that the choir really enjoyed putting up a finger at almost all the music they had ever done ... and it is emotional and exhausting and very satisfying, although I may be the only one that people think I smoked too much hashish to hear it ... and I'm a veteran ... I quit all that stuff 45 years ago! As a composer, when you chart out all of his work, he is likely to be one of the great composers of the 20th century ... with one problem ... fans and "top ten'ers" don't know music much, and they only vote for their favorites ... and thus, FZ does not get much attention here except on some threads where some folks say something nice. But ... remember this ... there has to be something in it, when European Orchestras and venues wanted him to do classical stuff and all he could do in America was OS/Ap/Sheik ... etc ... which likely bored him senseless!

^ Off topic, but what is that weird version??? Is it some kind of remix? I mean, it's fun, but VERY different from the version I know: Edited by projeKct - May 08 2021 at 11:09 |

^ I have no idea, I had just posted that without listening to it. I came across the video you posted first, but didn't go with it because it has dead air at the end. It is strange now that I listen to it (some kid of a remix I would guess).
The version you now have is the one I know and like. Edited by Logan - May 08 2021 at 11:19 |

^^ Frank re-mixed some of his older songs and added more contemporary drum beats, a bad idea for sure.

Thanks, it sounds really "off" to me. The two are interesting to compare. With some of those artists who tried to contemporise their sound through remixes adding things etc., the music ended up sounding less timeless (not quite the word I want) to these ears in a way. Too many mess with the classics -- commonly it's nice to hear different live versions, though. |

My introduction to Frank Zappa was Freak Out! which I loved (at the age of 14). Around the same time I also went throug Joe's Garage and Hot Rats, but I got bored. I still like his early work
the best. Albums like Overnight Sensation, which seem to be more popular, sound rather conventional to me in comparison. |

Hi, OS was a hit because it was perfect for the FM radio in Southern California at the time, and all of a sudden all over the FM radio in America .... no one could resist an album that was selling that well, and played really nice on your turntable. At the time, FM radio in many places was being hounded by many (supposed) FCC folks counting how many bad words were used and such, and the stations could get fined and all that ... to my knowledge it never came to pass, and the joke was that the FCC used old ladies to listen to stuff they didn't like, but there were many things that were still censored before they were played ... PF's Money had a few words blanked out, for example, until a few years later, the FCC stopped burning money on nothing and let it go. But a copy of that censored version of PF's song, is worth a lot of money, and it was only available for the stations, and never sent out to the public ... which ought to tell you how malicious the whole thing was and specially dishonest.

"Inca Roads" is awesome with a great guitar solo to boot. Zappa made a lot of albums and there are several bad ones, but the good ones are superb.
Also, he was truly progressive. Every album was different. He covered psychedelic, jazz, rock, classical. Edited by Grumpyprogfan - May 08 2021 at 14:56 |

I think I'm in the same boat as you regarding Zappa. I used to listen to a couple of his compositions and really liked them, but then others just weren't gripping me. I sampled Grand Wazoo a couple weeks ago and passed on it. Just doesn't fit my preferences at this stage in my life. But I still respect his musical talent and influence a lot. |

Yup, a big influence but that does not equate to me liking his music. I'm not interested in exploring FZ, there is more interesting stuff for me to pay attn to. That's a good way to summarize it, does not fit my preferences at this stage in my life....and I'm not embarrassed about this.

I'm a die hard Rush fan and I also really enjoy Pawn Hearts when I'm in a hardcore prog kind of mood. As someone who enjoys both, I think they can be compatible, but you have to be listening for what they have in common rather than what separates them, which is admittedly quite a lot.

Well, this thread is a saucer full of uninteresting, predictable prog preferences lol.
Zappa = too much satire/comedy for most is not unusual. I personally love that level of comedy in his music, it's another level of his genius/satire regarding art-as-consumerism, etc. That's just my personal grasp and what I get out of being a Zappa fan. Now Pink Floyd being prog rock, I feel like we need a thread debating this never-discussed-topic here

I find it hilarious people will praise Gabriel but denounce Hammil; they're cousins in terms of wackiness and vocal prowess IMHO. Also vocal tone of Geddy is an issue for some, but not VDGG, or vice versa as you said. For the record I love VDGG and Rush, the former is a much larger influence on my personal musical output than the latter, even though the latter might appear to be whom I'm drawing direct influence from. It's inescapable as a three piece prog rock band. "You guys like RUSH?!".

Me too (Moving Waves) and I haven't heard anything since that makes we want to change that. I mean, what did Geddy sound like before his balls dropped?
