Well, this thread certainly veered off the beaten path and proverbially slammed into The Wall. Gilmour and Wright certainly helped Syd after he left Floyd in the studio with his 2 solo efforts in 1970 (with Waters providing some production work on Madcap Laughs), but then they lost track of him, which often happens. Given the 5 year interval, and Syd's radically different look in 1975, it is easy to see that the band didn't recognize him, particularly in a busy studio setting with people filing in an out all of the time. Nick Mason said he was "horrified" when Gilmour finally identified him, and Waters was reportedly "reduced to tears". That is how radically different he looked.

Whatever, fact remains Syd's longtime buddies AND band members didn't even try to speak to him, call him, give him a nudge, verify with security who that man was, what he was doing there, etc etc. .....too many contradictions by band members who DID NOT want to see or talk to Syd !!! |

what's a "yet troll"? You're not a troll yet but working on it? Why are you not mentioning the hell Syd put on the other band members? Musicians have been kicked out for less reasons than Sud has. How he was impossible to work with and be around with during the promotion and tour of Piper? Or that he constantly embarrassed the band in interviews, how the first American tour was a nightmare because of him. How he was impossible to write a song with trying to make the follow up to Piper. That you forget to mention. But fanboys are impossible to have a conversation with, so whatever "dude"...

Your opinion is ridiculously judgmental and misinformed; in addition, based on interviews there doesn't seem to be any contradictions among the band members. They did not recognize the bloated bald man with shaved eyebrows, and they were genuinely shocked when they finally figured out who he was. And to show you are [in error], here is a further recounting of the WYWH session:
So, evidently the band did talk with him. Evidently, he was asked to stay and attend Gilmour's wedding reception after the recording session. Evidently, Syd was so messed up he left without telling anyone. This is further borne out in an encounter between Syd and Roger Waters a couple years later at the London department store Herrods. Syd saw Waters, dropped his bag and ran away. So, as with all relationships, it takes two to tango. P.S. Edited out all the html/CSS interwebz scripting garbage that was vomited onto this post after it was previously edited by the kindly mod.

I hid a couple of posts (and then some more), one which clearly went over the line and I will be issuing a warning. The old adage of attack the ideas, not the person applies.
Bear in mind the forum rules: 1. No Vulgarity profanity, or bigotry 2. No Personal attacks (flaming or trolling) 4. No Sniping See http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13083 Best not to post until cooling down and you can discuss the ideas rationally (that's really hard when upset), don't goad, and just avoid insulting behavior (there's the principle of charity and all that). Not that one must have the last word and be right-- stops just dropping a discussion is the best way to avoid getting disrespectful/ insulting. At the old forum I belonged to we had one basic rule, "Be excellent to each other". Edited by Logan - February 13 2021 at 09:52 |

One of the few things I don't like about this site is that there's no ignore button. Being able to ignore people on here would make life so much easier for everyone but for some reason those who started this place didn't think it was necessary apparently.

Well, they didn't design the forum software, that's Web Wiz Forums, and I don't know why that one was gone with (cost I suppose) or which ones would have provided an Ignore button. I can't remember if this was the first forum software they used. I don't believe this forum software has that functionality, and to move to another is not that easy methinks (migrating over all the posts). None of the forums I belonged to before this one had an Ignore function (they all used different services methinks). I think modern VBulletin versions provide it now.

They certainly have wider appeal than any other band that gets labelled prog including Rush and Yes. I think one reason why they became so huge when others didn't is because they weren't typically as complex and were often closer to "normal" rock than the others. If I wanted to be somewhat mean I could even say they are a band for people who aren't that big into music or a prog band for people who don't like prog.

It's not impossible. I remember progressive ears totally changing websites about 9 years ago(I don't remember the reason though). However, it might not make sense at this point and probably would just confuse people. This site is admittedly a lot bigger and more involved than PE.

Still, I don't think things become ugly quiet so often on this forum, I don't think the ignore button is so needed anyway. And still, I don't fully understand how such a feature would work... why do we need an ignore button to ignore posts we don't like... all we have to do is, well, ignore them.

I suppose an ignore button would just make it easier to ignore them. Some of us don't have much self discipline and could benefit from said button.
