Syd Barrett, the guitarist with Pink Floyd, was a creative genius in his TIME, having written such psychedelic RELICS as "ARNOLD LAYNE" and "SEE EMILY PLAY", where his abstruse lyrics were sometimes OBSCURED BY CLOUDS. Sadly, his overuse of the psychedelic drug LSD led to BRAIN DAMAGE and mental illness. In A MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON, he's rumoured to have walked all the way from London to his home in Cambridge.
While most Pink Floyd fans will be aware that SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND was written as a tribute to Syd Barrett, I wonder how many Pink Floyd fans know that their first album, THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN, was a chapter from Kenneth Grahame's book, "The Wind in the Willows".
It's with SORROW we remember that Syd Barrett (1946-2006) and Richard Wright (1943-2008) are no longer with us and they're now COMFORTABLY NUMB, having both gone to THE GREAT GIG IN THE SKY. I've never seen Pink Floyd perform live IN THE FLESH, but their music will live on forever. No Prog-Rock band will ever ECLIPSE the music of Pink Floyd, no matter how much TIME goes by in THE ENDLESS RIVER of eternity.
The space-themed songs of Pink Floyd SPEAK TO ME with special appeal because one of my passions in life is ASTRONOMY DOMINE. It's nice to STOP for a moment and dream of ONE OF THESE DAYS leaving MOTHER Earth behind and flying ROUND AND AROUND the universe forever. It'd be GOODBYE BLUE SKY as I SET THE CONTROLS FOR THE HEART OF THE SUN. I'd be LEARNING TO FLY with A NEW MACHINE capable of unimaginable speeds in INTERSTELLAR OVERDRIVE. I'd fly with the PULSE jets FLAMING past THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON towards the FAT OLD SUN and then out into the EMPTY SPACES beyond. Eventually, I'd arrive at the Alpha Centauri CLUSTER ONE star system looking for SIGNS OF LIFE where there are TWO SUNS IN THE SUNSET. I've often wondered IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE in the vast universe or is there NOBODY HOME.
I REMEMBER A DAY back in the mid-1960's when landing a man on the Moon seemed about as likely as seeing PIGS ON THE WING. At the TIME, THE DOGS OF WAR had just been unleashed in Vietnam, when the USA took the disastrous decision to MEDDLE in a foreign war in a faraway land. The more recent calamitous decision to invade Iraq in 2003 has resonant ECHOES of the Vietnam War. Both terrible wars bring into stark contrast the POLES APART difference between war and peaceful space exploration.
American Presidents KEEP TALKING about one day landing a man on Mars and plans are now COMING BACK TO LIFE for a Mars mission. I have HIGH HOPES that we'll one day land men on Mars and that will be A GREAT DAY FOR FREEDOM. I'll be LOST FOR WORDS if it ever happens in my lifetime. It'll be ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL of space exploration where MONEY is no barrier to scientific discovery. The first men on Mars will be FEARLESS explorers who've made THE FINAL CUT and they won't RUN LIKE HELL at the prospect of ONE SLIP-up leaving them MAROONED on a distant planet.
Thanks to the Internet, we're now living through some of THE HAPPIEST DAYS OF OUR LIVES and Prog Archives is ONE OF THE FEW websites devoted to Prog-Rock. It's just the website we needed to BREATHE new life into the genre, which appeared to be dying out in the late 1970's with the arrival of Punk Rock. It was a case of US AND THEM, with "Us", the prog-rockers, ranged against "Them", the punk-rockers. Prog-Rock is now COMING BACK TO LIFE with a vengeance and there's much MORE than A SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS just waiting to be rediscovered in the wonderful world of Prog-Rock. The choice of music these days is virtually unlimited and it's not a case of ANY COLOUR YOU LIKE as long as it's black. To any of my friends who haven't yet discovered this amazing site, I say WISH YOU WERE HERE with me to enjoy it.
I can hear the DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER outside and the rain's pounding against THE WALL. I'm a lover of all ANIMALS, and I often wonder how PIGS, SHEEP and DOGS cope when they're ON THE RUN outside in the middle of a thunderstorm. I love to watch a thunderstorm at nighttime and I'll often open the curtains in order to LET THERE BE MORE LIGHT coming in from the distant flashes of lightning, which are never OBSCURED BY CLOUDS.

I wonder how many Pink Floyd fans of my generation, like me, knew Wind in the Willows before knowing Pink Floyd? And I was born years after Pink Floyd released its first album. My Godather sent me audio tapes of him reading the whole thing, and it was one of the first novels that I read as a child -- I found the "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" chapter magical. OH, I also read it to my children (only finished it with one of them), but my Godfather had a much more dramatic voice, and I just put them to sleep quickly by reading it. So it was effective in that sense. Perhaps I should have got them the audio novel Kenneth Branagh reads Kenneth Grahame's Wind in the Willows, with a foreword by Kenneth Anger (if it exists, which is doubtful, at least when it comes to a foreword by Anger).
I almost feel like that should be required reading for children as there is such warmth, humour, and humanity in that tale of animals.

@Logan:- In my case, I'm old enough to remember "The Wind in the Willows" long before becoming aware of Pink Floyd. I didn't buy my first Pink Floyd album until the mid-1990's even though I was born in 1959.

Well, if he's the animals' lover in a more Platonic sense, it's probably okay.

Interesting. Despite my youth, I bought my first Pink Floyd album in 1983, that was the first record I bought. The first cassette I bought was The Who's It's Hard, and the first CD I bought was the soundtrack for a film called The Hunger. I guess I got to know Pink Floyd in the late 70s thanks to one of my brother's and my friend's older brothers.

I never bought any Pink Floyd albums on vinyl. I bought my first Pink Floyd album (The Dark Side of the Moon) on CD, around about 1995. I remember the first album I ever bought on vinyl was Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" in 1973 when I was 14 years old.

I also bought my first Pink Floyd album in the mid 90s (The Division Bell, when it was out); but I was born in 1981. Haha. One thing I consider myselt lucky about is, I'm among the first people in Turkey who read the original Turkish translation of The Lord of the Rings novels. It was translated to Turkish very belatedly (1997-98), I don't know why. At that time, my English was in the upper-intermediate level at best, so reading its Turkish translation was the only way to enjoy and understand it properly. Actually again in or around that year, I read The Dark Tower's first novel (hey another DT, haha) and was blown away. I immediately forgot about LOTR and began on a quest for searching the missing parts of that legend by Stephen King (who is the real DT's enemy, haha).

@Odvin Draoi:- "The Division Bell" was a good choice for your first Pink Floyd album purchase, because I consider that to be their best album. Maybe it's time for a best Pink Floyd album poll, although I have a feeling that "The Dark Side of the Moon" will win the poll hands down.

No doubt "Dark Side of the Moon" is the best ever Pink Floyd album, and a good candidate for best Prog Album of them all, but Pink Floyd's best individual songs are not in DSotM, Echoes (the song) and Shine on you crazy diamonds" are better individually than anything in DSotM.

Pink Floyd has covered so much in their catalog, that there's a little something for everyone, and are able to appeal to many different people, with many different tastes. Great band, and certainly one of my best ten of all times.

In childhood, I saw the 30-minute Disney cartoon The Wind and the Willows (1949) on TV and later purchased it on VHS. Also, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Disneyland Park (Anaheim, Calif.) is based on the children's novel.

Vinyl rulez!!!
Hearing DSOtM on my TT is simply amazing, I've had several copies but the 30th Anniversary edition that was cut by Doug Sax and Kevin Gray mastered at RTI is simply glorious.
I have not spun Tubular Bells in a long time, maybe tomorrow.....I have an original US pressing 1973.

Couldn't agree less
Time is my favourite Floyd song while Wish You Were Here is near perfect as an album (perhaps the decision to bring Roy Harper in Have a Cigar was regrettable but the title track is one of the best songs ever written from a sentimental point of view and Welcome To The Machine is just so lush, maybe Wright's finest moment)

@RichardH:- "Have a Cigar" and "Welcome to the Machine" are two of the Pink Floyd songs I couldn't find a place for in my blog. I agree it was a bad decision to bring in Roy Harper on vocals for "Have a Cigar" when Dave Gilmour would have sounded much better.

I don't think David Gilmour could have made it better than Roy Harper. Harper sounds like a powerful version of Roger Waters. Gilmour would have been very different. Surely he could sing the higher notes, but on that song Harpers voice fits perfectly

With one exception ... DG does not have the cinycism in his words and voice that Roy has which would make the song much better and more pointed.
Roy Harper is, by far, one of the best poets and writers out there, and his voice is not to be taken for granted, as he is very special, with one problem ... a rock bullsh*t audience, would boo him off the stage as he yelled insults at them, I bet!
The problem is that the majority of PF folks have never heard a single album by Roy, to even know what he is about ... and the ridiculous comments made about Roy and his singing that song ... is, downright pathetic ... the sort of comment that goes along with every guitar must sound rock'n'roll'ish, and singers can not be different than everyone else, and an intelligent singer that knows what he is doing is stupid and off his kiln.
Roy, btw, was asked to tour with PF, and he declined, because he knew that commentators and fans, like some stuff said about him, is not something he needed to face in his life ... he has more albums than PF and many of them are not over rated and too fat with themselves. ... and besides ... he gets to play and have fun with Jimmy Page ... and DG doesn't!

Thanks for the warm praise. I've been writing song titles messages and blogs since early 2013 and this one took me eight hours to write - that's two hours to write all of Pink Floyd's usable songs down, around four hours to write the actual blog, one hour to give it a final edit and then another hour spent highlighting all of the songs in colour. You might like my Meat Loaf "Bat Out of Hell" blog and Eagles "Hotel California" blog too if you like this one.

this is absolutely true. The best album ever to stick on a coffee table and pretend to have great taste.
It was never exactly 'out there' though. Mostly formulaic blues/psyche /rock mix but lyrically it was grounded in human experience and had nothing to do with goblins and elves as apparently most prog is about.

Thanks man....I think I'd seen this before when it came out, but it was nevertheless wonderful to appreciate again. I love they give a bunch of time to the people behind the band, filling in the interesting spaces that the boys don't talk much about. I love the appreciation of Rick's playing on Shine On. It's cool to hear snippets of Dave singing "Have a Cigar."
For an album where they felt so "absent," it is music that is absolutely not, to me. It is wonderful and spacious, cold/warm, abrasive, freeing, just perfect.

Ditto from me.....
Harper is perfect for that song....and I'm betting his non commercial music stance is one of the reasons he was asked to do it.
Regarding DSOTM...I simply don't play it anymore..heard it far too many times..and if you turn on FM radio in the US you'll eventually hear a track or two.

Psychedelic Paul, Wow! You have done it again! Since I selected my username because I have a deep love for this iconic band, I read this titles blog very carefully. It was by all means a tribute to them by our friend Psychedelic Paul. Thanks, Paul. You are no RELIC, you have a fresh perspective on creating a memorable story that will linger in our minds about Pink Floyd. Your song titles blog goes on like an ENDLESS RIVER of sweet memories about the band members. Your blogs really SPEAK TO ME, Paul...I'll keep reading as long as you keep writing. I can't REMEMBER A DAY when I thought your blogs were boring..no they are so interesting. So, SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND!!! and keep coming up with more wonderful blogs. Your fans await you!! Keep em' coming! Thanks, FloydianPinkRose

Thank You FloydianPinkRose. Your kind words mean MORE to me than A SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS and you deserve a "MEDDLE" for putting so much effort into your reply. Your generous praise leaves me speechless and all I can say is "UMMAGUMMA". I WISH YOU WERE HERE with me in England to make my heart PULSE with passion for you, my ATOM HEART MOTHER. In A MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON, I might be tempted to fly out to The States before THE DIVISION BELL tolls and THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN plays his final tune. It's reassuring to know I've made THE FINAL CUT with you and you don't consider me to be one of life's old RELICS. Without the wonders of the Internet to break down THE WALL between us, you'd be constantly OBSCURED BY CLOUDS and be as seemingly remote as THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. I can hear the DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER outside and the ANIMALS are heading for cover. It's getting late here in England in THE ENDLESS RIVER of time, so it's time for me to go now. Ciao.

This is one of those albums that has just been played so often that I have actually lost touch with it. It just doesn't do it for me as much as Animals or WYWH. Even the Wall which I have listened to, to the point of it losing its impact still gets to me more than Dark Side.

We don't have a rule about not posting famous tracks that I am aware of, but of course one can make such requests both to the poster and one can suggest rules/ guidelines. I'm not comfortable with people dictating that others not do it.
I'm okay with posting famous songs, just not full albums generally or overloading topics with videos in many threads, which is something that some people have found issue with me (I've always had premium internet service). That said, I'm more interested in hearing the lesser known ones and loved listening to that Cymbaline one and I love More (my favourite from it is "Cirrus Minor").
This is one of my absolute Pink Floyd favourites:

^ I am the one annoyed (for lack of a better word) by famous songs videos, especially studio versions, it's simply a pointless thing to do, hasn't everyone heard those songs, who is the video posted for? The simple mention of those songs should be enough.

The last and only time I listened to A Momentary Lapse of Reason was in 1989, and despite being rather inebriated at the time, I remember that night quite well. "On the Turning Away" I know very well because it got so much airplay here back when I would still listen to rock radio, but Signs of Life I did not readily remember. I would not expect everyone to know or remember such music well or so-well that a reminder might be of no benefit.
There is much music that I know so well that it may seem pointless to ever listen to again as I can anticipate every note, but I might still like to aurally experience again even when I can play that music well in my own head. That which is pointless to you or to me may not be pointless to all others. I find that kind of assumptive thinking quite arrogant. When we get annoyed, often the problem isn't with others, it's with us. We may get annoyed too easily. If I'm annoyed, that's my problem, and sometimes I may force that problem on others which will annoy others. Readily expressing annoyance can be really annoying, I think. Being a pessimist and rather too cynical, I know I far to often do annoy others. Complaining is what really annoys a lot of people, and talk to my wife, I am one hell of a whiner. Sad, but true. At least I recognise it and feel a sense of shame about it. Whiners never win and winners never whine I like to tell myself.
I won't tell you how to think, Cristi, but I recognise that my negativity is a problem, and wish I were more positive and would focus more on the posts and topics that I appreciate than on ones that I don't (ones where I think I can have an interesting conversation and hopefully say something insightful, although as I get older it seems I become less insightful). People generally don't appreciate people who complain a lot, demand a lot, and take things personally a lot. Negativity begets negativity. I do wish we would all try to be a little more tolerant, open-minded, and thick skinned, and complain a lot less (most are good here, but sometimes some of us can get rather snide, demanding, and generally bitchy). I do think it important to look at our own faults, and how others might perceive us, and be quicker to judge ourselves and what we think than others -- be sceptical about ourselves and critical of ourselves and even notions we hold dear.
We may have the right to complain, but that doesn't make it right. And what is redundant to you or me may not be redundant to everyone. I think how one phrases things is important, such as saying, "I would rather X because Y reasons" rather than potentially coming across as bitter and spiteful. What may be a problem for one person might not be a problem for another, so it's important to recognise that we each speak/ think from our own perspective according to our own biases and can't always expect others to feel the same or to act in the way that we would want. And "after a while, you can work on points for style."
So many topics turn into philosophical and psychological discussions....

I don't think I am being negative, or intolerant or narrow-minded. My only complain was about the abundance of videos of bands that don't need video presentations. That's all. I'm not even the complaining type of person.
Disagreeing with someone does not mean I am negative or that I am complaining. It means I just have a different opinion. That's all.

It's not just about expressing an opinion, it's how it is expressed. You might come across as the complaining (and demanding) type when you write things like "who do you post these videos for? how many times do you need to be told not to post videos of famous songs? " I don't know how many others are saying that Paul should not post videos of famous songs. My only complaint was that we have rules when it comes to posting full albums (and that embedding many videos is a problem for some when it comes to page load and data). You seem to disagree or take issue so much with Paul that I am surprised you pay his posts and topics so much attention, but if that is your bliss....

I found the claim that it is pointless to be a problematic assertion. That, said, I will assume that the videos are posted more for Paul by Paul than for anybody else. We tend to be rather selfish posters who do it for our own benefit, even when we feel like we don't want to. I don't enjoy doing moderation, but have discomfort when I don't. Sometimes I do it very badly which make me feel terrible.
I like to say, feel free to speak your mind, but mind your speech. I often feel like I'm walking on eggshells here. Heck, I have said some very controversial things before, hold some controversial views, and taken controversial actions. Trying to live in a polite society where we can express our ideas and be genuine can be very difficult.
I like to see diversity of opinion -- that lends itself to more interesting discussions and I know that I like to have my notions challenged and I do change my mind about things and can come to appreciate different perspectives especially when thoughtfully expressed. I am not one who should say that we should always avoid causing offence, and I am a great believer in freedom of speech (within certain limits), fighting bad ideas with good ideas....

Is the PA entry of the album wrong?
Is it called "Dark Side Of The Moon" or "The Dark Side Of The Moon".

That's weird, and I had noticed that before but forgot to take action. I've always thought it was The Dark Side of the Moon and that's how others list it including PF's official site. For such a famous band and album, that's an odd mistake to be there and last even without the title on the cover. I looked back at archived snapshots from about a decade ago and it didn't have the "The" then either. I will correct it.

^ It's a bit of a grey (or Dark) area but I think it can be either interpretation: I have the album on CD and on the front cover it says "The Dark Side of the Moon", but on the spine of the CD cover and on the CD itself it simply says "Dark Side of the Moon", so I don't think there's any right or wrong way to list the album. I hope that helps.

^ I see, that would explain how it could last without the "The". Still I changed it to fit how most other sites I have seen, including Pink Floyds official site, lists it (as The Dark Side of the Moon). And fixed The Piper at the Gates of Dawn while I was at it. It had the The, but it is NOT The Pooper at the Gates of Yawn. (j/k)

The Slightly Grey Side of the Moon is just one More album title that's Obscured by Clouds in The Endless River of albums.

I unironically like Britney Spears.
When she first came onto the scene, I was a pre-teen girl, so obviously it appealed to me at that time.
And you know, nostalgia and i'm a product of my time, so I would happily listen to Britney or the Spice Girls and then go listen to VDGG or Magma.

It's all good in my book.
I used to like Culture Club, Dollar, Gary Glitter and the Bay City Rollers, but don't tell anyone.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to post any videos from The Wall album, for obvious reasons.

So you cannot express an opinion on the album, songs from the album, musicians without a video.
You can do whatever you want, it seems I am in the wrong...

I like the music from The Wall, but The Wall movie is basically a Neo-Nazi propaganda film.

Bob Geldof plays the part of a neo-fascist cult leader in The Wall and this is what it says about the movie on Wikipedia.....
"The film is best known for its imagery of mental isolation, drug use, war, fascism, dark or disturbing animated sequences, sexual situations, violence and gore."

^So because it includes imagery of Fascism it is Fascist?
Have you not watched the film either?

I haven't watched the film in its entirety because it's too disturbing, but I've seen all of the neo-fascist music videos that make up The Wall album. The only video I could post here is for "Another Brick in the Wall", but we've all seen that video anyway, so I won't bother.

Please don't listen to Randy Newman's 'Short People'

I've been trying to tell Cristi that for ages. He's right in these circumstances though - Roger Waters, support a Nazi film? Dunno what Paul's thinking.

Yeah, Randy Newman has many times been accused of Shortism. He doesn't need another accusation.
