^ But then again Malher never really dropped an embarrassment of a symphony - desperate to get some FM radio airplay. Which in many ways is why I remember Giant For A Day! as a complete abomination

Hi,

I can't say that I do not like some of the albums by some of the bands that I have over 15/20 cd's of. I have a terrible hard time figuring out which album I like more than the other, but in general, when I like the band, the albums and their differences do not matter.

Some fans like the 5th, others the 9th ... I like the 3rd myself! (Mahler), but there is nothing in those things that suggest the work is not very good, or great ... for me it flies and then some!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Hate is a strong word, but I reacted very negative towards these albums from bands and artists I normally love:

Comus - To Keep From Crying
Arti & Mestieri - Quinto Stato
David Bowie - Black Tie White Noise
Gentle Giant - Giant for a Day!
Miles Davis - You're Under Arrest
Peter Hammill - The Fall of the House of Usher (yeah I don't get it)
Herbie Hancock - Monster
The Residents - Freak Show
Wayne Shorter - Native Dancer
Frank Zappa - You Are What You Is

^ I own at least half the albums on that above list - many of which I've bought from charity shops and car boot sales at bargain basement prices - so it seems they're the unpopular prog albums that the majority of prog fans want to dispose of. Luckily for me, my musical tastes aren't that discerning. Tongue

Just because someone hates particular albums doesn't mean they aren't any good, just that we respond differently to certain albums and the fact we love particular bands we tend to react harshly to the albums we don't like from those bands we love because we have high expectations from them.

But at least he tried out things on Earthling, such as drum and bass music (whether or not one likes that type of music is another story - it's not so much my thing, but I acknowledge its qualities). On Hours it doesn't sound to me like he is trying anything.
[/QUOTE]

I know. 1. Outside esp the full 2 cd version is very interesting. Nice re-write after The Leon Suites, which his distribution company refused. That would have tested many.

Earthling is very powerful sounding. The second Cd sort of acts like a mini Dead Man Walking concept piece. He took the modern approach then (as ever) and applied song craft. Very novel.

Crimson's The Construkction Of Light is actually one of their best albums. Actually Crimson never made a weak album, they are all enjoyable, and their best albums can be found in any of their phases.

What an odd question. Or perhaps I just don’t understand what you are questioning? Or perhaps you are being facetious?

I definitely love King Crimson. Not everything they’ve done - but then again, I’m not sure there is any band or artist for whom I love everything they’ve done. But I certainly love a lot of King Crimson’s music, and enough for me to say that I love them. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I really like Aerosol Grey Machine, and I like Mother Focus. As for Giant for a Day, it's more that I just plain dislike it than love to hate it.

I can't think of any albums that I love to hate, I know there have been some guilty pleasure ones that I have somewhat hated to love.

The only love to hate thing that I can think of right now might have been Chibnal's Doctor Who run, which is off-topic.

As for King Crimson, I have no reason to think that people don't genuinely love it. I genuinely love KC music, but not all of it. I haven't thought of it as particularly simplistic nor that complex. There is a lot of very simple music that I love, and I know that a lot of very simple music that people love. I'm not sure how serious you are being or if I may be misunderstanding you. Even in Prog, I wouldn't call it simplistic, let alone compared to much mainstream rock and pop music.

1.The Construkction Of Light - King Crimson
2. Giant For a Day - Gentle Giant
3. Wonderworld - Uriah Heep
4.  Locked In - Wishbone Ash
5. Aerosol Grey Machine - VDDG
6. Broadsword and The Beast - Jethro Tull
7. The Unfortunate Cup of Tea - Horslips
8. Ian Anderson - Rupi's Dance
9. Mother Focus - Focus

I just realized...maybe I am not really into prog, as I can only select these 9 acts I possibly "love"... all the other prog artists that I have in my collection I just don't "love" that much. Uriah Heep I loved up until 1973....and Wishbone Ash are prog-related as well.

Question is; can anyone really love King Crimson?! Or is it too simplistic to love KC?! I don't love them; just respect them.

I'm afraid The Dreaming is only a poor 2-star album for me, but on a positive note, Hounds of Love, Aerial & 50 Words for Snow are all 5-star favourites. Thumbs Up

I'm speechless.

It's a daring adventurous album. We should expect that some hate it...

Love the band, but "Pure" never click on me, perhaps the voice of Fog or the lack of experimentation compared to "Strange in Stereo" and "Omnio".

Yea, I was a little surprised to see The Dreaming on his list too (along with Discipline)
But I guess we like what we like.
