I've been watching his videos for
quite sometime now, and what I have thought about based on many of his
comments on his "lists" is that he does not have intimate experience
with all of it.
Especially the albums in his list that are less than popular, those are the ones he has not much to say about in detail.
We
all own "krappy" albums but because we own them we know why they are
krappy, rather than going to the WWW to find out, which is what I think
he might be doing in some cases. Now buying all these albums in CD
format is super cheap....It would make sense if he goes ahead and spends
$10 and buys 6-8 CDs of a band to legitimize his claims. I don't have a
problem with him reading notes, for him to review a band like Yes with
so many albums you would need notes. It's the content I have question
on, it seems too basic and no details with his critique of certain
albums.
But I guess in this age of the internet......it must all be true.
To
be fair, I'm sure that SoT is a good site for someone just getting into
prog rock as it's not very detailed and the videos would be a plus. But
for old hands like us, I don't think so.
Yeah, didn't mean to come down on Pardo or SoT. They're defending the cause, no matter at what level.

going after his hair? God I wish I still had some.
Yeah (again), but it's just that he should maybe get a peak at the ratings on dedicated sites, instezad or purely relying on his (sometimes insufficent) knowledge ... and tastes
I just looked at Pardo's list posted by PP, and TBH, outside Renaissance (the MKI dissing) and some odd choices in Floyd's discography, I generally +/- agree with his preferences order in his list.

I agree with you and I didn't mean to come down that badly on the man, but I still feel that SoT is a bit too light weight for most here. But Psych Paul was the one who posted all this, so there you go.
This message was brought to you by a proud supporter of the Deep State.
The music doesn't help. I could never get along with someone with no sense of style. And Pardo's hair is from the 70s. Yuck.
picking on someone's looks is lame to be honest.
Pick on his opinions if you will, not his looks.
Shallow narcissism is in. You gotta get with the times.
Well, for a guy above 40, (I'd give him between 55 & 60), he's still got hairs (and plenty), which is a lot more than many can say.
He should fix that tooth, though.
This said, I just quickly ffwd through his Renaissance appraisal and find him indeed fairly shallow: not only is he not sure about what he's saying, he's reading the tracks or participants (he's even mentionning drummer Slade - instead of Sullivan) and almost totally disregarding the ex-Yardbirds line-up (does he even own them at all?) not even showing the albums, as opposed to those crappy 80's and 00's albums, which he obviously owns.
How can someone knowing so little about a band's embryonic days can be assessing them correctly?
It's not just a question of tastes (and publishing them), but a question of credibility:
- I mean the Yardbirds "were still looking around and trying to find the Renaissance style"?? Looks like the Dunford-Haslam duo never tried any further in that case, because they owe everything to the MkI line-up.
- Tout one of the best bassist? Weeeelllllllllllllllll, he owes eveything to Cennamo.
- AFAIK,Tatcher wasn't involved in the band in the early days.
I'd hate to hear his appraisal of other bands.

I agree, and I still watch him regularly. I'm not insinuating he is lying, just that a small % of the time seems like he is not too well versed like he really has not listened to the album in question or it may have been a long time ago or just going off memory.
I like Pete, he's pretty genuine to me and I like he has guest interviews......To me his new reviews are more in-depth, not a big fan of Top Album lists.

I don't think anybody is bashing the guy, at least I don't read any posts like that. Some of us just made a comment about his content in Top Album lists. Regardless, you put yourself on the internet like that and you open yourself up for critique, positive and negative. He does a lot of reviews on progressive/prog music, which is great.
But for me I prefer his new album reviews because then I know he is well versed and listened to the album probably several times. When he does a Top Album list with 10 albums, that's about 100 hours of music to review.
If I wait another 2 months I suspect my hair will look like his except mine is still pretty much black......

Ummagumma and Piper at the Gates of Dawn are at the bottom of my Pink Floyd listings too, although I'm surprised to see Wish You Were Here near the bottom of your list.
Psycho your VDGG rankings look deliberately ridiculous, Least and H to He as 5 star but Pawn Heart as a 2 star is barking.
My VDGG album rankings are absolutely genuine, and with the exception of Pawn Hearts (which I've never liked) and The Aerosol Grey Machine, they're very close to Pete Pardo's rankings.
Plague is easy enough, but Man-Erg and Lemmings really require that extra-clic to get it.
I doubt PP will one day "get" those two tracks, though, but can only tell him to keep trying.

Yeah (once again), but indeed, one has to wonder if he's not spreading himself a little thin, so he should prepare more in thowse top lists.
I also think that he should go a litttle deeper by presenting the albums in a chronological order first, than secondly give us his order of preference afterwards.

Indeed the critique is more about the substance of his top list for XYZ.
His hairdo reminds me much of UZ's Daniel Denis, actually

I've listened to Pawn Hearts three times now, so I doubt if I'll ever "get" that album if I listen to it for a fourth time. The only positive thing I can say about Pawn Hearts, is it's my favourite out of the six VDGG albums I've rated with two stars.

You might "get it" three years from now. Sometimes it happens that way. I'm "getting" things sooner that I used to. I can't tell you how many years it took me to "get" bathroom spray.
---------- i'm shopping for a new oil-cured sinus bag that's a happy bag of lettuce this car smells like cartilage nothing beats a good video about fractions
^ I bought the two 1970 VDGG albums last Christmas without even hearing them first, after reading some of the rave reviews on ProgArchives, but from my point of view, it's a good thing I didn't buy the Pawn Hearts album instead, or that might have put me off Van der Graaf Generator for life.
King Crimson are another band I have a hard time getting into, and I'll have Pete Pardo's King Crimson album rankings coming up next.

The Least We Can Do is listen to what Pete Pardo has to say about Van der Graaf Generator, which will be coming up next, while there's Still Life in this thread.
I'll have about as much interest in what he has to say as a plague of lighthouses.
