Praised by critics and fans alike, this album is, in my humble opinion, overrated and quite polarizing. What do other forum users think of this 1977 'masterpiece'?

I don't know if "overrated" is the right word here, but it's overhyped still, it sold well and it's a famous album, if not one the most famous ones, several songs from it are still played everywhere.

edit: it's overrated... LOL

Not at all, but the follow-up album "Tusk" is overrated. It's a double album which should have been a single album, if you discount all of the raw songs recorded in Lindsey Buckingham's garage. Smile

What's polarizing about it? I think 99% of people agree its a classic album with relatively strong pop rock songs front to back.

It's strange, his songs on that album usually get sl*g.ed off but I love them. My version of Tusk would be his songs with most of the Stevie Nicks ones.

Not sure if this is the correct percentage LOL
It is a strong pop rock album, some amazing songs, and some which are garbage.

I don't think it's overrated. It's a great album.
I think the issue is that there are many other great albums that don't get anywhere near the same amount of attention in the "lamestream media" (sorry, couldn't resist). You only have to look at PA's top 100 to work out what I'm talking about

I would not call it overrated. Like it or not, it's a rock solid album.

I don't know of any songs that are "garbage" on the superb Rumours album, but you're welcome to Go Your Own Way. Wink

Okay, okay, garbage might be a bit too extreme but 'Second Hand News', 'Never Going Back Again', 'Oh Daddy', 'Gold Dust Woman' are so edgeless and make me roll my eyes.
This said, 'The Chain' and 'Dreams' are killer tracks.

I like Joe Jackson's version of "Oh Well". Beyond that, FM are a pass for me. All of their music is overrated to my ears.

Don't know. It's not by any means groundbreaking or anything, but it's still a very good album. Perhaps it sounds a bit too streamlined and commercial, but the songs are very well crafted, and most importantly, it's a very accomplished album. Personal favourites: "Dreams", "The Chain", "You Make Loving Fun" and "Gold Dust Woman".

It’s an exceptional album, deservedly mega selling. I also love Tusk. The Mac were a great band, and Buckingham is a genius. One of my favourite non-prog albums is Gift Of Screws.

So basically you don't like it so therefore it's overrated. Is it overplayed? For sure but it's a classic album for a reason.

Never said I don't like it. Perhaps, I love one half and despise the other... don't know where this stands on the like-dislike spectrum. Tongue

Here's a beautiful cover of one of the songs I adore on this album, I hope it lifts the spirits on this thread a bit. Embarrassed

No, it is not overrated. It is an excellent example of pop/rock songwriting. The Chain and Gold Dust Woman are the best of these. Not my cup of tea as a whole, but you have to recognize the result.
