Recently listened to the video comparing American Big 4 vs German Big 4 [thrash metal bands].
Is there a consensus as to how it all's going on in classic prog? Prog Rock's Big 6 is KC, Yes, Genesis, ELP, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd - am I right? As the admirer of GG (and, for the most part, the unlover of KC, Yes, ELP and PF), I find it unjust, of course.

Yes, that seems to be the general consensus of opinion on Prog-Rock's Big Six, according to a recent poll.

Trying to find justice in the unjust world, I suppose ![]() Perhaps, different people may add their candidates and form their own Big's. In thrash metal it was fairly obvious - but thrash is a very restricted style of music. Anyway.

There has just been a big 6 discussion a little while ago, I thought that was done for a while. Sorry for the naive thought, these kind of topics will never end... Silly me...

Excuse me ![]() This is probably the first time I'm in such a trouble. What do you propose? Let's remove my thread then!

ignore me... you are not in trouble. I've said my gripe with the whole big 6, you won't see me post in this thread no more.

This kind of topic has been done many times before, but I can merge this with the last topic (a very time-consuming process when it comes to long threads as I need to do it one post at a time) if the OP is okay with that. That said, it might get a little confusing. If you are specifically trying to make the case that in a just world Gentle Giant would be considered part of the big six (despite it's lack of popularity/ knownness/ success during the classic era), then that becomes its own subject.
To me the justice angle is of little interest. The big six are the big six because they were more commercially successful and had more recognition. I like Art Zoyd much more than Yes, but I don't think it unfair that Art Zoyd never had the same level of recognition. That said, Art Zoyd is still in my Prog Archives big six. Popularity does not equal quality. And if GG were there in the big six, then I think that VdGG also should be in it. Edited by Logan - October 06 2020 at 16:26 |

My understanding is that they are considered the big six not because they’re the best, but the most successful in record sales and in making the people aware of the genre.

My thoughts as well. GG is top tier prog rock for me regardless of popular opinion.

How much does it matter? We can like and not like whatever we want anyway. Note that I'm not being negative about this thread, I'm honestly curious why people care that much.

These prog bands were voted the all-time Top 20 in a recent PA poll:-
1. Genesis (508 points) 2. Yes (436 points) 3. King Crimson (432 points) 4. Pink Floyd (428 points) 5. Rush (243 points) 6. Emerson, Lake & Palmer (165 points) 7. Jethro Tull (136 points) 8. Van der Graaf Generator (123 points) 9. Gentle Giant (91 points) 10. IQ (90 points) 11. Marillion (80 points) 12. Soft Machine (78 points) 13. Porcupine Tree (75 points) 14. Renaissance (67 points) 15. Can (66 points) 16. Cardiacs (60 points) 17. Camel (59 points) 18. Magma (57 points) 19. Spock's Beard (55 points) 20. Henry Cow (46 points) Personally, I would place Jethro Tull in the Big Six in place of Rush, but that's just my biased British opinion. ![]() |

I was thinking of this poll when reading this thread....Although the topic of the Big "#" of prog bands has been discussed ad nauseam here. I would not change results of any poll, it is what it is but we all have our preferences. What struck me is IQ and Marillion at 10 and 11, strange since there is such a disdain for neo-prog in general. I like Marillion wayyy more than IQ, there would be a spread on my list between the two. I also thought CAN would have been higher, I don't think people appreciate CAN for what they did...I would swap CAN and VdGG. Just my 2 centavos....

^ Christi will be pleased that Marillion are #11 in the poll, putting them in the "second tier" of prog.
![]() My only disappointment was that my favourite band Renaissance didn't quite make it into the Top 10.

Although I love VdGG as well, I'm always delighted when you write about Can; they seem quite far from what you usually listen to, as is much of my taste, but both of us can see the genius there.
