King Missile is okay. LOL

I think the "Content made for kids." is a mistake by whoever created the video. I looked a little more into it, and it looks like the person posting is responsible for tagging whether the video is specifically for kids.

Quote Per our announcement in September 2019, we’ve made some changes to better protect kids and their privacy, and to address concerns raised by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC).  If their content is child-directed, creators are required to set their video or channel’s audience as “made for kids.

More notes and also on Cristi's two added songs:

Cristi: Nick Drake “Day Is Done”  He was such a master of his style.  Gorgeous.  One of my favourite artists, for just this kind of tune.  Black Trip “Putting Out The Fire”  Dark metal (as one might expect from the band name).  Nice double guitars.  The vocals are a little under the top on this one (in terms of production).

Mike: Took out my thoughts on Ambrosia (very hometown band to me, they’re also from San Pedro and I knew them personally).   Beck “Girl” Catchy, poppy song, nice twangy, twisty guitars.  Enjoyed the video, too, more “hometown” (LA) scenes and the MAD Magazine references. The Avett Brothers “Swept Away” Some banjo for Micky here.  Big Americana-type band in Nashville the years I lived there and with good reason.  Not something I really listen to a lot, but it’s refreshing once in a while.  The Low Anthem “To Ohio” This is more the style of brushing-up-against-Americana that I enjoy.  Have never heard them, but really enjoy the harmonized vocals and understated sound.  Will probably be looking up more of them.

Raff:  The Creatures “But Not Them”  Very energetic art rock/punk edged (at least this one), this evokes a jungle vibe, with the drums and the heat in the lyrics.  Anuna “Deep Dead Blue”  much more what I enjoy (as you probably know already!).  Hypnotic, angelic voices in a minor key.  What’s not to like?

Micky:  Modest Mouse “Satin In A Coffin”  A band I know my son likes, now my time to hear something.  Already like the title….As promised, banjo and some edgy vocals, made me laugh!  I have a special place in my heart for f-you songs.  😊  Neil Young “Old King”  You already know how much I love Neil Young.  And dogs.  Poor old King.  R.E.M. “Wendell Gee” This is my favourite R.E.M. LP.  The whole thing is just stellar.  And this song is one of the reasons why.  Heart “Dreamboat Annie”  Very familiar with this, and what a great Karaoke story to go with it!  Shoulda got that on film, Micky.  You also know how I feel about the too-long for this poll “Bluebird.” Heart The Hollies “Stop Stop Stop”  As you probably could guess, I remember this one well, also.  What a time that was, so much experimentation.  This song is what made my first husband think of using his banjo as a substitute for a saz until he got the real thing when he was recruited into a Middle Eastern music and dance act.  You can hear echoes of what The Kaleidoscope were doing, as well.  Here is a Kaleidoscope piece, "Banjo," David Lindley solo on this one.  Can't get the video to post, so using a link, instead.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2_N3ae_mC0&t=22s&ab_channel=ErickTovarVenegas

Lorenzo:  Morphine “Honey White”  With all of the horns, reminds me a bit of Roy Wood, but the voice is kind of what I think of as a lazy voice (which is not a criticism), it’s kind of drawly.  Definitely a well-done rocker.  Afterhours “Male di miele” Hard punkish edge to this, rollicking song.  Bruce Springsteen “Candy’s Room”  a rocker from Bruce this time, with a guitar solo that hearkens to The Yardbirds.  Kind of a sad song to me, lyrically.

mathman: Yasmine Hamdan's song sounds quite a bit better to my ears than the other two. The Donnie Iris one has some fun bits, the Dag one doesn't speak to me at all.

Funny that many of us (myself included) have gone rather mainstream for this poll... My take on/after a first batch:

Mathman: Dag and Donnie Iris are pleasant listens, but do not leave that remaining impression that Yasmine Hamden's song has on me: a powerful one, with a nice build-up, mixing melancholy and sorrow.

Logan: CocoRosie have made some more convincing songs than this one. I prefer Susan Christie and Gary Numan: both very captivating but in completely different ways. Difficult to make a choice between these two.

Snicolette: Both The Kinks and Gordon Lightfoot are quite nice romantic songs, but I guess I am now more in a Fever Tree mood: I like the energy that pours over from this song.

Cristi (first batch): Simon & Garfunkel, the only album of them I have and it is a brilliant one. Child and New Model Army do not really appeal to me. Most of these songs are a bit too mainstream for me, but from these I think I prefer Morten Harket.

Lewian: Oh, when even Lewian goes Pop, where is the world heading then? Both Pinback and Caparezza are interesting listens but also rather forgettable to me, once the song is over.

The Dark Elf: Three great classic songs. The Kinks are unbeatable, though.

I prophesy disaster: Devo, at first I thought that this is not my thing, but it has something mysteriously intriguing. Tropicana and The Orb don't have the same effect. Early Van Halen cannot do much wrong with me, although Atomic Punk would not be my choice from this album. I had completely forgotten the name of Edwyn Collins, but not this wonderful hit song!

TCat: Beck, to my ears and apart from the guitar interlude, produces here a rather dull pop song. I like the Avett Brothers much more, but The Low Anthem is really a very beautiful song - I by far prefer this one.

Yes, I have my dark sides, too. Tongue (I'm also on record as the biggest Nik Kershaw fan in this forum.)

None of the songs are actually mainstream, Joey Tempest solo for example did very little and mostly Europe fans paid attention. Same with Morten Harket (a-ha listeners). I think both artists created those albums for the fun of it, because they are musicians and, not to serve a wide audience. If you really look what was happening in the mainstream world in the 2000s or these days, you wouldn't say any of it is mainstream or even "pop".

^ "Mainstream", I guess,  wasn't the right choice of words, but to my ears they are a bit too straight forward. That describes probably better what I mean, and it remains of course just a personal appreciation.

Second batch:

Raff: Now we're going for some originality... Two very different but great and captivating songs. The drum riff from The Creatures and the vocals on the Anuna track are enough to convince me completely. Wouldn't know which one to choose, though.

micky: I don't share your love for the banjo, but these four songs are very good indeed. Didn't know Modest Mouse, but I prefer their song over the REM and Neil Young selections here. I even like The Hollies here, but none of these can beat Heart's Dreamboat Annie. I follow you in your choice.

Cristi (second batch): Day is Done by Nick Drake, what is not to like? A very beautiful song! Black Trip (which is missing in the playlist (mathman's censorship? ;) is quite nice. It's maybe not the most original song but I do like it very much. Great playing! Didn't know the band, so will explore a bit more of them.

jamesbaldwin: Morphine, oh yes, a wonderful drive in this song; a great interplay between bass, drums and sax - I think I never heard them before but I really like this one. Afterhours is much less my cup of tea, a bit too much garage-rock for me. And although I am not a big Springsteen fan, everytime I have to acknowledge that he is a real great songwriter. Like this one too, but Morphine wins this for me easily.

The Anders: CTM's La Mer (not on the playlist) is a very nice discovery. It has a very interesting sonic quality. Makes me curious to listen to more of the album. Thanks!

Lewian: Glad you're back into more alternative territories ;) But Solarference will not win me over, I actually cannot stand her voice... which is a pity, because I like their approach.

Songs I knew in advance:
Johnny Cash - "A Boy Named Sue"
The Kinks - "Dedicated Follower of Fashion"
R.E.M. - "Wendell Gee"
The Hollies - "Stop Stop Stop"

I know several other artists for other songs. The Creatures - if I remember correctly - was a (fictional) band featuring either David St. Hubbins or Nigel Tufnel before they joined forces. The other one played in "The Lovely Lads".

I've been trying to think of other short songs to suggest here, but all I could think of was bands I had already suggested in previous polls, or songs everyone and their dog knowsWink. Therefore, this time around I'll stick with just two - unless I get an illumination before it's time to vote.

There are so many I am already familiar with here, but as usual, there is a lot of great new stuff which I am slowly making my way through.  The ones I'm already too familiar with are:  Donnie Iris, Gordon Lightfoot, Simon & Garfunkel, The New Seekers, Johnny Cash, Van Halen, Neil Young (love almost everything by Neil Young but this song is not a favorite), R.E.M. (this is one of my favorite songs from them), Heart, The Hollies, Bruce Springsteen.

And now getting up to date with first listens, starting with an addition from Lewian:

Lewian:  Solarference “I Wish That The Wars Were All Over”  An old ballad with more modern trappings, enjoyed the interplay of voices and the different arrangement of this song.  Sadly, it’s still relevant, isn’t it?

The Anders:  CTM “La Mer”  I really enjoyed this combination of classical and jazz.  Deep voiced female singing with cello and piano, kind of minimal sound.    Very intriguing.

suitkees:  The Nits “In The Dutch Mountains” I think I may have heard this before.  It’s reminiscent to my ear of The Waterboys, who I love.  This has some different elements than Mike Scott and friends, however.  Nice entry.  Yann Tiersen “A Secret Place”  Very cinematic song with unconventional use of instruments, kind of a “talky” vocal.  I like the musical part of it very much.  Jeanne Added “Look at them”  Definitely not jazz, it’s in a very modern pop style.  I’m not a fan of this vocal type, although I don’t doubt her talent.  King Missile “The President”  LOL!  I wonder how they really feel?  There is a song (in a much more traditional style), by Eliza Gilkyson, which she wrote with GW Bush in mind “Man of God,” which also applies equally to 45.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm snipping the posts just to highlight the comments on the material I proposed. I had hoped to bring some variety to my three choices even if two were in the sorts of folk realm.

Originally posted by Snicolette Snicolette wrote:

Susan Christie “Paint A Lady”
Pretty psych-folk.  Never heard this one, love the warbly guitars and the imagery.  Produced with a really retro sound.
Gary Numan “I Die, You Die”
Gary Numanmsticking with his signature style.  Not really a fan of the robotic sound.
CocoRosie “Lemonade”
Interesting dark sound.  Video makes me think of “Gormenghast,” (on the third book of the trilogy, second time around). I find the vocals distracting, I don’t know if they always sound this way, or if it was affected for this tune. I like the video more than the piece, because of the vocals.  But I find the chorus kind of enchanting….it may grow on me, who knows?

The singer who sings the weird parts in that quite Gormenghastly video always has a bit of an odd voice from what I have heard (reminiscent to me of Bjork) but I would not call that song typical of it (not that I've heard a lot of CocoRosie -- it was the imagery of the video that interested me particularly). While I don't find her vocals exactly pleasant in the track I posted (pleasant can be so boring), I like the vocals in the song, and I like the contrast. I like quirky, and those make the song more interesting to me. Without that it would sound less unique and wyrd, so those vocals are a plus for me in the song.

That's a favourite Numan song of mine for some reason, although Replicas is my favourite Numan album.

With the Julie Christy, I really like that song except for the clock (tick tock stuff, which reminds me of Hannibal Lecter). "Tiktok on the clock but the party never stops.... Oh, oh whoah whoah" or whatever.

I'm not that familiar with much CocoRosie, so I think that will be out of the running. It intrigued me. EDIT: I don't know enough of CocoRosie to judge how convincing it is comparatively, but I like it, had planned for that to be my nomination, and probably will stick with it.

When I saw the title of this poll, the first one I thought of was Buffy Sainte-Marie's Vampire, but then I read the OP and saw it was too short (could be accepted now).

I might nominate this instead (had planned to save this for a later round, not sure if I've mentioned this in any of these topics -- I know I did it in one of my own polls):

The Cardigans - "The Great Divide"
