Interactive Poll #18 for Real: Short and No Suites

Logan:  Susan Christie “Paint A Lady”  Pretty psych-folk.  Never heard this one, love the warbly guitars and the imagery.  Produced with a really retro sound.  Gary Numan “I Die, You Die” Gary Numan sticking with his signature style.  Not really a fan of the robotic sound.  CocoRosie “Lemonade” Interesting dark sound.  Video makes me think of “Gormenghast,” (on the third book of the trilogy, second time around).  I find the vocals distracting, I don’t know if they always sound this way, or if it was affected for this tune.  I like the video more than the piece, because of the vocals.  But I find the chorus kind of enchanting….it may grow on me, who knows?

Cristi:  Simon & Garfunkel “Kathy’s Song,”  One of my favourite LPs of all time.  I so enjoyed seeing them live in Nashville, local Phil Everly came up and sang with them also.  Art hit that high, sustained note in “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” perfectly, even though this was in the 90’s.  The Child “Little Light”  Lovely, heavy, slow-moving psych!  Never heard this one before.  Will certainly go back for another listen.  Morten Harket “Burn Money Burn” Definitely enjoyable, rock-with-synths, but not as light as the A-ha smash hit. I really prefer his voice in this more mid-range.  Joey Tempest “Sometimes” Solid rock vocalist and well-crafted song here.  New Model Army “Lights Go Out” Hard rock with a punk edge to it.  Not as fond of the vocal style, but it’s a pretty rocking tune.  Lyrics are thoughtful. 

Lewian:  Pinback “Devil You Know”  Interesting repeating bass lines, nice change-ups, with this alt-rock sort of band.  Liked the chorus and it’s certainly catchy.  Caparezza “Teste-Di-Modi”  This kind of thing is just not for me, although the video is amusing. 

Greg:  The New Seekers “Look What They’ve Done To My Song Ma”  I remember this version, as well as the original by Melanie.  I like both versions, really.  Johnny Cash “A Boy Named Sue”  Great, great, performer/artist, of course I know this one.  He was also so supportive of others, his tv variety show was just fantastic.  No wonder that this song was a hit all over the place.  The Kinks “Dedicated Follower of Fashion”  Another familiar to me, BIG Kinks fan from their beginning.  No one else quite like them. 

I prophesy disaster:  Devo “Shrivel Up” Princes of New Wave, I enjoy their sarcasm, but it’s not my favourite listening style.  Morgan Delt “Tropicana” Here we have some kind of psych-tinged edgy music.  Not sure what I think of it yet. Van Halen “Atomic Punk”  I think I’ve said, not a Van Halen fan much. I think DLR is a great showman, but just not my kind of music.  The Orb “Toxygene” Electronic music here, not a genre I necessarily enjoy, but some has surprised me.  Not this one, though.  Edwyn Collins “A Girl Like You”  I remember this one and quite enjoyed it at the time, a KROQ staple.  Love the fuzz guitar riff, it also got a lot of club play in LA at the time.
