Next small batch of 'long time, no plays'; only 2 tonight-
Bruford- The Bruford Tapes: Despite the 'Bootleg' quality (particularly at the very beginning of 'Hells Bells' where it made me wince slightly) this is a great set of top, top musicians making great music and having fun doing it. Will hang on to this one i think. Billy Cobham- Life & times: this is a white label pre-release in a white sleeve with no info and came in a batch i bought nearly 30 years ago. I'd forgotten how good this is with the great John Scofield on guitar.. when i'm in the mood for this kinda funky fusion music. Think this is a keeper for now. Hmm, that 'sell' pile is looking woefully small...

Eleanor Friedberger | Last Summer - formerly half of the Fiery Furnaces with her Zappaesque maniac brother Matt. She provided a lot of the focus and down to earth personality for that often zany band, and here she does a simple album of indie pop songs, with her voice and phrasing setting it apart. Nothing to get too excited about, but pretty good.
Univers Zero | Heresie — Long time no see, Heresie! Wow, this was one of the first prog CDs I bought in the early 90s once the newly developed internet revealed that prog existed not only in England and the US! Who knew? Universal Totem Orchestra | Rituale Alieno — cool Italian album, kind of Zeuhlish (not sure how/if they’re classified here), which I was given to review around the turn of the century. Peter Gabriel | Security — Shock the Monkey just always makes me happy. Hard to explain. Heard it a million times and it just doesn’t get old. I missed the rest of side 2 cuz I got a call from a coworker who was babbling on a lot. Mission of Burma | The Sound, The Speed, The Light - one of their post-reunion albums that I didn’t like at first but it sounded good today. I think I was comparing it to The Obliterati, which is produced in such a bludgeoning way (and I think it may he their masterpiece) that anything produced more cleanly sounded wimpy. It’s not, though. Liars | WIXIW — amazing experimental rock group. This was 2 albums ago (2012) and they were a trio. Now they’re down to 1 guy. I’m eager to see if/how the band will build back up again. The Jam | The Gift — the last Jam album. Love it. Not the best, but not the worst. Somewhere in the middle, but with 2-3 amazing songs. The Turtles | Present the Battle of the Bands — Sgt. Turtle’s Lonely Hearts Club Band! What a fun ride this is. If you try one Turtles album, go with this one. Preoccupations | s/t — post-punk circa 1996. Their debut (when they were called Viet Cong) was more impressive, but this one’s a grower. They have a newer one I should grab sometime. Yo La Tengo | And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out — Quiet, twilight songs of gentle beauty. My 2nd favorite YLT album, and a real sonic treat for the ears. Couldn’t really crank it today but it sounds great that way. |

Over the last couple of days:
Be-bop deluxe: Drastic Plastic- I really rate Bill Nelson and BBD and just dont think there's enough appreciation or discussion about his music here. I particularly like this lp as its just full of 'ear-worm' songs for me and is overlaid with a hint of menace in the lyrics. Neu: Neu- Nothing to be said except pure genius. Barclay James Harvest- Berlin: a concert for the people- Ive got various promo editions of this lp from Germany and ive got to end up with just one.. Though sometimes i wonder why i have it at all.. A band i love at the point they just went MOR and really bland. But i saw them live at this time and i remember that despite the slightly cheesy nature of some of the (particularly Les Holroyd) later tracks they could still produce strong, emotive and melodic music with a high level of musicianship, particularly in John Lees guitar work. And ive just got a very, very soft spot for them... Brian Eno & David Byrne: My life in the bush of Ghosts- snippets of this have been used to advertise a BBC radio 4 program which got my ears twitching and dug the lp out. Still as dense, atmospheric and unsettling as it always was. Still think that the 'Solo' on Regiment is Robert Fripp doing his Frippery but he's not credited so probably not.. |

A very German week, and a few suggestions from Steven Wilson's podcast, which I'll keep discovering next week:
Marillion - Fugazi Tangerine Dream - White Eagle XTC - Drums and Wires (I heard some of their songs before but I only liked them now.) ELO - On the Third Day Talking Heads - Fear of Music Can - Future Days (I heard it dozens of times but finally got myself a copy of it ) Schicke Führs Fröhling - Symphonic Pictures (Very playful intrumental Space/Symphonic Prog. I wasn't aware of them.) Schicke Führs Fröhling - Sunburst (A bit more Fusion and Electronic. It reminded me of Heldon at times) Lipps Inc. - Pucker Up La Düsseldorf - La Düsseldorf (Same as Can. I like this one even more than Neu's debut.) Cichla Temensis - Fantasia XTC - Black Sea Novalis - Sommerabend Tangerine Dream - Sorcerer |

Since Saturday: Ozric Tentacles - Pungent Effulgent (I bought it last month although I didn't know their ealier work, but they already had developed their sound at the time.)
Stringtronics - Mindbender Höstsonaten - Höstsonaten (Pastoral Prog with a very anemic mix and weak vocals, it's hard to stay awake, especially with a 41 minute "epic".) Mike Oldfield - Crises (First listen to my mint condition original German pressing. I heard so many new little details.) Ryuichi Sakamoto - B-2 Unit Godley & Creme - L (First listen to this duo. I only knew 10cc's debut but it didn't convince me like this one. It's great how they used the production for comical purposes without sounding disjointed.) Grobschnitt - Solar Music Live (One of the best sounding live albums of the 70's to my ears.) Rick Wakeman - The Red Planet (I read some positive reviews but it still surprised me. Very tasteful music and he gives more space to other musicians which makes it more bearable.) Kashgar - Artefact |

Am I the only one who likes to browse this thread and the previous one? I noticed I listed the Grobschnitt album for the first time exactly five years ago, suggested by David at the time

I wasn't that impressed the first time but I sensed there's enough to keep coming back to it, it didn't take long before I realized this is one hell of an album. The thing is the melodies and vocals are just amazing and that takes a few spins to really sink in, plus the sound and songwriting is really tastefully crafted. I'm glad to see you spin that amazing Grobschnitt album, probably it's one of the best live albums of the 70's. L is another superb avant album if you can get your head around those quirky vocals. If you liked this one 10cc is will be easier to get into and just as good, but the debut is hardly the one to go for, it's best to try their second album Sheet Music.
