Finishing up the list:
Zoot - Eleanor Rigby An exciting take and variation of the original with some great guitar riffs giving the track a new life. Ramsey Lewis Trio - Hard Day's Night A great, unpolished performance that ranks up there with the best of all Beatles' covers. Very enjoyable and the crowd only makes it more interesting. The Cardigans - Iron Man Great cover, but I'm already too familiar with it. Still, it's a great choice. Sorry I don't have time to comment on all of the auxillary postings that were put up, but I did hear them all and found this to be one of the most interesting collections of postings. There is some really great stuff here. |

And a comment on the final nominations: Chris Cornell - Billie Jean The version I am listening to is slightly different than the one in the playlist (which is blocked in Denmark), but as I understand it, it is essentially in the same mood. To be honest, I am unsure of what to think of it, but in any case there is a great potential for a mash-up of "Billie Jean" and "Nothing Else Matters". It is more bluesy, but it leaves me a bit indifferent. Zoot - Eleanor Rigby This is certainly very different from the Beatles, and judging by the intro alone, I would not associate it with Eleanor Rigby. I like the heavy guitar riffs, but whether or not the style really fits the melody is another question. My favourite part is probably the ascending guitar figure after "when there's nobody there" - it reflects the string quartet arrangement in the original version. The outro is great too. Perhaps you should just forget about the Beatles and listen to it as if it were an original number. The Ramsey Lewis Trio - A Hard Day's Night In this case I really think the jazzy arrangement fits the song. Not so much to say about, just an enjoyable listening experience, and it sounds like the audience enjoyed it too. The Cardigans - Iron Man This one was blocked in Denmark too, but it looks like it's the album version anyway, so I turned to Spotify. This one is very different, which should come as no surprise as the Cardigans and Black Sabbath are very far away from each other musically. I really enjoyed this one.

Some observations: I'm surprised I like Ozzy's cover of 21st Century Schizoid Man a lot. I'm surely not a fan of Ozzy, but this is very well suited to his style. Eleanor Rigby is a good thing to cover actually; the original is quite extreme in a way and leaves a lot of space to go on about it in a very different way (same holds for Kraftwerk's music, I guess, even though on the composition side they're not quite the Beatles). The Zoot one is maybe not quite up there with the one micky posted, but it surely makes sense what they are doing there. Similarly Kat Onoma's Radioactivity - not quite sure how much I like it, but for sure its a worthy re-interpretation of that song. Living Color's Memories Can't Wait is very good to listen to, but I have to make my mind up about how much of that I actually give to the excellent original. Sure it's different, but still good in a somewhat similar way. I know that legendary All Along the Watchtower cover probably too well to vote for it, it's great of course, but I can't help thinking that Bob Dylan is much better as a composer than many of his own interpretations of his songs are, so he is an easy one to improve upon (except Hurricane). Enough for now.

This thread has been so rich with the many interesting cover versions proposed that the final nominations hardly reflect the quality that can be found here. I am less impressed by the more rock oriented renditions of some of those great classic songs and of which I prefer, by far, the original, but overall it is very nice to discover some of these. Once the nominations listed, my first two votes were found rather quickly: - Placebo - Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush) - The Unthanks - Sea Song (Robert Wyatt) The third one was more difficult to decide on, but in order not to go with the obvious Jimi H. or evt. Chris Cornell or Ramsey Lewis, it goes to: - The Cardigans - Iron Man (Black Sabbath, the original that I don't like..;)

My final votes. 10
of these actually made it to the real competition level for me. Here are my top 3 and 2 honourable mentions,
but this one was the hardest yet, as I’d heard most of the songs (and a ton of
the covers….and yes, the sheer amount of listening added to that), but judging
from a cover perspective is different than judging a song new to my ears.
1. Annie Haslam “Ripples” As expected, gorgeous. Very good chance of this winning for me, as I’d not heard it before. 😊 And after all, it did. 2. Live “I Walk the Line” Very moving take on this song. Never heard them do it, very powerful. 3. Patti Smith “So You Want To Be A Rock and Roll Star” A most excellent choice. It keeps the slippy, slidy sound of the original, yet brings a punk edge to it. She’s just brilliant. Honourable Mentions: Placebo “Running Up That Hill” Wow. This is a very chilling version of this song. It’s very spare and gave me chills. Not easy to do. that said.. I had my first three on the first listen through and didn't change with a 2nd listen through last night. 1. easy.. there is a reason she picked it. It absolutely rules.. Muzz and Vernon were on fire there.. and IMO topped the original. The highpoint of a fabulous album and that was saying something. Memories Can Wait 2. Leave it to Christian to pick another winner.. in fact I did a playlist for my mobile player of poll favorites and you sir are the winnner for number of selections I picked. Greg being a rather close 2nd (that brazillian one you did in the Latin thread is a favorite of the office btw) Robots 3. and the WTF out of left field that nailed me hard on the first listen.. and why oh why did we all forget this stone cold classic in the singer-songwriter thread. Minus 2 Mick points to myself for that oversight... what a song.. and having a bunch of Dannish Euros sing Choctaw and Tallahatchie in a song.. well.. that gets my vote in any poll.

Congrats to everyone for choosing some really fantastic covers  ! We need to do this once again (at the very least), because there is so much out there. Now it's time for me to vote. Choosing three wasn't easy, but in the end that's how it went for me. Ruling out "All Along the Watchtower" because of its undeniable high profile, here's my top 3: - Ode to Billie Joe: though the cover very different from the original, this Danish new wave band nailed the Southern Gothic atmosphere incredibly well. - Never Let Me Down: though not a million miles away from the original, the Smashing Pumpkins cover conveys the intriguing, vaguely sinister atmosphere that is the band's trademark. - Sea Song: it's impossible to improve upon a song that is already perfect, but The Unthanks' slo-mo cover gave it a rather doom-laden tinge that I liked. Not all of the covers selected for this round are successful, in my humble opinion, but the important thing is that almost none of them (I'll refrain from mentioning the exception  ) were boring or predictable.Honourable mentions: - So You Want to be a Rock'n'Roll Star: Patti Smith's cover captures the spirit of the original while injecting more energy. - Eleanor Rigby: like "Sea Song", this song is impossible to improve upon, but I liked the way the band made it their own.
