Subject: Interactive Poll #16 - Under Cover

After missing the last couple of polls, I'm back in the saddle with the promised (or threatenedWink?) poll about cover songs. I've always had a thing about covers - the good ones, of courseLOL! - and am curious to see how other people tastes run regarding this particular "subgenre" of music.

First of all, no rush at all! I posted this now because I had some time, but everyone who'd like to participate can take as long as they need to think about their own nominations and post them here. As this is August, and a lot of people may be away from home, we'll let this run all week through next weekend.

There is a very wide range of music to be explored, so this time around I'll make things easy, and set only a couple of rules. Eligible songs should fall into these three categories:

- the band or artist who released the original is on PA/the band or artist who did the cover is not;
- the band or artist who released the original is not on PA/the band or artist who did the cover is;
- neither the band or artist who released the original nor the band or artist who did the cover is on PA.

This means, for instance, that a Beatles cover by Genesis would NOT be eligible, because both bands are on PA. In any case, with these rules, a whole lot of great music will be eligible to be posted in this poll. Hope this is clear enoughSmile!

To avoid cluttering the previous post, I'll post a few of my selections here.

This is one of those covers that, in my view, are even better than the already very good original (by Talking Heads). Living Colour are an incredible band:

A legendary version of Them's best-known song:

And another one that almost beats the original (by Stevie Wonder):

More to come later! In the meantime, enjoySmile!

Is it ok for the cover artist and the original both not be on PA? For example, neither RHCP nor Stevie Wonder are on PA.

This is a dangerous category for me. I could easily post a 100+ videos. I'll need to have some restraint. But I am stuck home due to rain and flood warnings.

Sorry about thatEmbarrassed! I just updated my post to clarify that "neither original nor cover artist on PA" is eligible. I should have made it clearer, rather than expecting it to be a given. In any case, two out of the three songs I posted fall into this third category (of all the bands/artists involved, only Talking Heads are on PA).

In an earlier interactive poll, I posted Ennio Morricone - Magic and Ecstasy. That was the original to the following cover, which I nominate:

Snakefinger - Magic and Ecstasy

I suppose I ought to post what is arguably the best cover ever:

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along The Watchtower

I know, I just want people to listen to it because it's awesome EmbarrassedLOL

I'l post a couple more covers really soon.

I made a list of covers on metal site, got to 48 songs. LOL Very few were exclusively metal though.

I have lot to choose from. In general, the original song being covered has to be good to begin with as all of the songs posted so far show. Sometimes a cover succeeds by being a better version of the original. I also like covers that are in style different from the original, or incorporate unique/different instruments.

So, starting off, are some covers of Guns N' Roses "Sweet Child O' Mine" and I am going plural.

First up is my nominee by Akasha (featuring Neneh Cherry). This is an electro-pop take on the song.

The rest are some different takes on the song that I enjoy. This next one I like for the video as much as the Indian-fusion instrumental take. The video offers a window into another part of the world that I am not familiar with and I really enjoyed watching. And, there's no sitar.

This one is an instrumental version by acoustic guitar virtuoso Luca Stricagnoli.

On the novelty side of things, here are the Heimatdamisch with their Oberkreiner version.

I'll conclude from the movie "Captain Fantastic" starring Vigo Mortensen.

I'll post my alternates next.

Some alternates.

Making a second appearance in this poll. The Heimatdamisch's cover of AC/DC's "Highway to Hell":

Placebo's cover of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill":

For Nickie: harps and horses. Camille and Kennerly's (aka The Harp Twins) cover of Iron Maiden's Run to the Hills:

Hannah Williams and the Affirmations's cover of Led Zeppelin's "Dazed and Confused":

Of course, is Led Zeppelin the original artist? Page played the song with the Yardbirds, but there are only live recordings. Until 2010, Page had sole songwriting credit. An out of court settled lawsuit has resulted in the credit going to Page, inspired by Jake Holmes. Here's the 1967 Holmes 'inspiration':

Plant did write his own lyrics but he couldn't get songwriting credit because of some prior recording contract.

All the Pink Floyd covers by Voivod are outstanding, and even if they cannot be nominated it's always good to remember them. I would also agree with "All Along the Watchtower" being the best cover everHeart, or at the very least one of the best.

Now that we are just throwing ideas around, and getting to know music we probably didn't know before, here's another couple of great covers for you. As Greg posted something by Siouxsie and the Banshees, here's another song by them - arguably one of the very best Beatles covers ever:

And another of my favourite women singers, Annie Lennox with an excellent Neil Young cover:

I know once I post this, I'll come up with a dozen.  But these are the first that came to my mind.  For covers, I kind of like the artist to "make it their own."

First choice, Sileas with Bill Wither's "Aint' No Sunshine (When She's Gone).  Not one but two harps and haunting vocals.

Second up is Richard Thompson with Britney Spears' smash hit, "Oops! I Did It Again:"

Third is Mary Fahl's cover of Joni Mitchell's "Urge For Going."  Tom Rush also did an excellent cover of this one.

And just because it is so good and she delivers it so perfectly chillingly, here is Tori Amos covering Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit."  I figured most would have known this one, so am not entering it, just in case anyone hasn't heard it, you should.

Nickie, I used to have the Tori Amos album of covers, Strange Little Girls. Unfortunately, it got lost (together with another few CDs) during the move from Italy. Everything else I'd had shipped got here safely, with the exception of that handful of CDs. One of the great mysteries of life LOL! Anyway, that album is a bit of a mixed bag, including some excellent covers and others that are a bit meh.

Anyway, a last song from me for today, which maybe Christian will appreciate, seen as the original version is in German ("Seeräuber Jenny", or "Pirate Jenny", from The Threepenny Opera by Brecht/Weill):

So many that I could post here too.  I'm sure I'll come back and post more later, but one of the best tribute albums is "Deadicated" which, of course, has covers of songs by The Grateful Dead, most of which are surprisingly good.  Take, for example, this medley of "China Doll/Cassidy" from Suzanne Vega (apologies for the misspelling of her name on the video):

And then also from that album is Elvis Costello's cover of "Ship of Fools":

Great choice here with Steeleye Span!

I'm a big Tori fan.  We also carried her on the buses many tours and I have a couple of signed and framed posters from her.  She always made sure I had good seating when she came through wherever we happened to be living at the time over the several years. I thought her cover of this was the best one she did (outside of her own songs).

Pomplamoose - I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing (originally by Aerosmith).

The original is a rather ordinary mainstream rock ballad, but Pomplamoose turned it into a really interesting song.

Oh nice! Actually I had missed that you wanted to do covers and I was already toying around with the idea of doing that myself in my next turn. Now I can leave that and come up with something else, which I'll happily do.

How much you can post while I was just out for a few hours is amazing. Probably the next week is covers listening only. Wink

For the beginning this is not only hilarious but also good to listen to. I'll post more later.

By the way, according to the rules Manfred Mann's Earthband's amazing Bruce Springsteen (and other) covers qualify, but I guess I don't need to play or nominate them because most prog fans will know them! (I'll do one on request though.)

I think there's going to be so many suggestions (even if the actual nominations are going to be fewer) that we will have to consider at least another cover-based poll, if not more. It would be great if we could think of a theme within a theme - i.e. covers with something in common, like novelty songs, women singers, and whatever else we might like.

Indeed! There are lots of great versions of Brecht/Weill songs and this inspires me to post two or three (the third is Brecht/Eisler).
Here's that very same song, in German, totally different. This is actually one of the very rare occasions when my father dug out some seriously good music for me.
I had already posted this one in another poll, but here it fits better - I may even nominate it:
Here's a Brecht/Eisler cover. You may wonder why I play this because it's sung by an obvious non-singer and you won't understand the German lyrics. Actually the lyrics just describe a scenario in the life of some people, nothing too important. It's only 1:21 long, but the melody is so iconic and melancholic that it never went out of my head after having heard it once. Also Grubenklangorchester are a jazzy German band of whom I know three great and very special albums, good to have an opportunity to play them here.

Les Claypool's Duo de Twang - "Battle of New Orleans" as only Mr. Claypool could cover it.  Kooky, quirky and catchy.  If there is only one Les Claypool cover you have heard in your life, hopefully this is it.

"Soulshine" is a song written by Warren Haynes (from the Allman Brothers Band), but was recorded by Larry McCray originally.  A year later, The Allman Brothers Band recorded it on their album and it became a fan favorite.  Fast forward some years and Haynes formed the band Gov't Mule along with fellow Allman Brothers Band bassist Allen Woody, and Haynes took his song along with him.  My favorite version of this song is this one by Gov't Mule, a case where the original writer covered his own song and gave it the soul it always cried out for.

And the very emotional, powerful and beautiful "Lilac Wine" by Jeff Buckley

Those two bring tears to my eyes each time I hear them.

This is a great poll theme! And already so many good suggestions...
Mine are maybe a bit of the eclectic kind, but I hope you will like them:

First, the sheer fun with Van Halen's rendition of Roy Orbison's Oh, Pretty Woman (with a tremendously silly funny clip! and unfortunately too much treble in the sound):

Second, a wonderful cover of Kraftwerk's Radioactivity by one of my favourite French bands: Kat Onoma (PLAY IT LOUD, through a good headset or hifi!):

And third, a brilliant cover of Jacques Dutronc's Il est cinq heures, Paris s'éveille by Belgium singer/songwriter An Pierlé:

(she is also a great performer, so if you want to see a live version - with a snippet of an other cover inserted - go https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1UWPvSl1-4" rel="nofollow - here Bad sound quality, though)

Enjoy!

The Danish musician Sebastian released a whole album with his own melodies to several Brecht lyrics. Among them, Seeräuber-Jenny (Sørøver-Jenny), Surabaya Johnny, Das Lied von der Moldau (Sangen om Vltava) and Die Ballade vom Wasserrad (Sangen om vandhjulet), Die Liebenden (De elskende).

Had some listening time today.  First notes on the first few entrants, will pick up later on with more, as time permits.  This one is harder for me, as of course I’ve heard most of the originals and also plenty of the covers.  I will likely go for something where I’ve not heard the cover before.

Raff:      In Living Colour “Memories Can’t Wait”  Blistering guitar, as would be expected from In Living Colour.  Definitely very much in their style as opposed to Talking Heads.  Patti Smith “Gloria”  Also made an iconic song completely her own.  Love both this and the original. RHCP “Higher Ground”  And here, also a classic done in another style than the original.  People seem to love ‘em, or hate ‘em.  Pretty infectious presentation.  Souixsie & the Banshees “Dear Prudence”  Another great 80’s act, this time taking on a 60’s classic.  Keeping the psych, yet updating the sound.  Annie Lennox “Don’t Let It Bring You Down”  Absolute classic Neil Young song, done with class by Annie.  Love her whispery vocal here, with the way-back vocal chorus effect.  Steeleye Span “The Black Freighter”  Love Maddy Prior and was lucky enough to see them play live.  Great pirate-y song.

I prophesy disaster:        Snakefinger “Magic and Ecstacy”  That was a wild romp.  Not quite sure what I think of it, yet.  Jimi Hendrix “All Along the Watchtower”  Arguably one of the BEST covers ever, hands down.  Zoot “Eleanor Rigby”  Another Beatles classic, this time done in a metal style.  Lots of pretty guitars in the video!  I kinda like the way they did this.  We’ll see if it sticks with me.

Cristi:    Johnny Cash “Hurt”  Another arguably one of the BEST covers ever.  He completely owned this song, his voice just took it to another place than the original, which also was very moving.  Talisman “Crazy”  Never heard this band before, quite a good cover of the song, which was also a great song in it’s original form.  WASP “Easy Living”  Done in a very WASP-y way, I still prefer the original.   Voivod “Astronomy Domine”  Also prefer the original here, that is one of my favourite PF LPs, so it would be hard to win me over with this one.  Heathen “Death on Two Legs”  They certainly did it differently, but it’s pretty hard to cover a Queen song and carry it off, at least for my ears.  The Wounded “Smalltown Boy” I really liked the original of this. This person does a biting off of lyrics kind of effect, I like the music the way they did it, but don’t care as much for the vocals, although I like the undertone vocal happening.  Smashing Pumpkins “Never Let Me Down Again” They did this well, it’s not a Depeche Mode song, the way that they’ve covered it.

Logan:   The Unthanks “Sea Song”  Beautiful cover of a beautiful, wistful song.  Rachel Unthank & The Winterset “Sea Song” I’m not sure which one I like better of these two.  Will have to return to them to see.  Benjamin Clementine “Riverman”  I definitely prefer the original to this one.  I just love Nick Drake’s voice and the production of the original, it just has more depth and body for me.  Galixis “I Want More”  I love the cover (the galactic jumping horse).  Kind of a sugary, poppy feel to this one.  Souixsie & The Banshees “Venus In Furs”  Pretty bombastic, like the original certainly was.  I like Souixsie, but I prefer the original, when I’m in a Velvet Underground kind of mood.  Sid Vicious “My Way”  Excellent novelty piece.  😊 Jad&Den Quintet “Trilogy”  Very enjoyable.  I think I’ve seen them cover something else before.  Kind of fell apart in the scat part (for me), but in general, a very good cover, and obviously accomplished musicians.   180 Gs “Dirty Boy” Not a Cardiacs fan, this one just wasn’t for me.  Boofy Flat

"Hortz Fur Dehn Stekehn West"  Interesting, kind of a dark march feeling to this.  Not sure I like it, but it’s got an earworm sort of appeal even if it doesn’t appeal to me on some level.

A long time favourite of mine:

Live he did it in many ways, here are two (first one ends 4:40, then a second one):

I think if I nominate one of these, it would be the first version in the live video; actually Rockpalast 1983 on German TV was the first time I heard this.

I have started to listen to these. It occurs to me that actually in all cases the original would also be of interest to hear what was done with it. Now chances are there are so many nominations that there is no way to listen to all of the suggestions plus originals... anyway, I just wanted to mention that.

Snakefinger - Magic and Ecstasy is an early favourite by the way.

There was an Australian project "The Money of the Gun" where they produced many versions of Stairway to Heaven in the style of various bands, which is lots of fun.

@The Anders: Nice! I remember that at the time I still watched Grand Prix Eurovision song contest, and Telex once were the entry for Belgium. They were fun really, I heard that they wanted to lose, and they were certainly taking the piss. I really don't remember that many of the Eurovision entries I've seen, so they were quite special in a way.  You know more of them? Did they actually do some serious music at some point? Cool

More notes continuing my first run-through of listening (I saw there are additions past this, will catch up with them, also, later on).

George:               The Sweet Child O’ Mine Suite of Entrants:  I have to say up front, I do not care for this song.  Don’t give up on me, George.  You’ll see, you won me over a bit.   But it’s a weird combination of things that makes me say that, personal things that the song represents to me, that I am not going to go into here.  However, I will listen to see what others have done with it.  Akasha “Sweet Child O’ Mine”  I like the take on it here.  It’s definitely a different song than the original, in terms of them making it their own.  Best Indian Fusion Instrumental Version “Sweet Child O’ Mine”  I REALLY liked this.  Makes me view the song from another viewpoint.  Luca Stricagnoli “Sweet Child O’ Mine”  This is also very nice. It’s a great melody, no argument on how it became such a smash hit.  Heimatdamisch “Sweet Child O’ Mine”  Definitely a novelty version of it, kind of funny, but also engaging.  Captain Fantastic “Sweet Child O’ Mine”  Huge Viggo fan here.  What a lovely, moving bit of film here.  A celebration of life and death.  Thank you for giving me a replacement for my original feelings about this song in a few ways.

And on to the other covers:  Heimatdamisch “Highway To Hell”  Again, wonderful novelty piece, this.  Gave me a big smile.  😊  Placebo “Running Up That Hill”  Wow.  This is a very chilling version of this song.  It’s very spare and gave me chills.   Not easy to do.  The Harp Twins “Run to the Hills”  Can’t lose with harps and horses!  At least not in my world.  And I love it when there are these surprise covers from a corner least expected.  Beautifully done!  Hannah Williams & the Affirmations “Dazed and Confused”  Nice to hear, from a woman’s perspective.  Made me wonder how Janis would have covered it, Hannah did a great job of it.  Jake Holmes “Dazed and Confused”  Thinking about your mention of Page’s *ahem* odd track record with credits.  Yeah.  Nice version.  Primus “The Devil Went Down To Georgia”  Scary video!  Well done in Primus mode.  Dinosaur Jr “Just Like Heaven”  Nice!  I love the original and also this wonky, warpy version!  Really inspired.  😊  Charles Bradley “Changes”  Gorgeous version of a great song.  The voice of experience here.  Lots of great material, George.

Mike:    Suzanne Vega “China Doll/Cassidy”  Suzanne Vega has done some really haunting material in her time.  This is one of those.  Elvis Costello “Ship of Fools”  My soul goes more to Suzanne, so far…but you’ve got some great stuff ahead, I can see.   Les Claypool “Battle of New Orleans”  Really interesting to me to hear this, I am not very familiar with Claypool outside Primus and of his collaboration with Sean Lennon, which I really enjoy.  Gov’t Mule “Soulshine”  This band always makes me think of someone I worked with, who had a great love of music and was a wonderful young man.  He died unexpectedly a few years ago, way, way too young to go.  I like to think his soul shines on, so thank you for this.  Chris Cornell “Billie Jean”  Really moving version of this.  Turned it completely into his own.  He was a real star.  Chills here, too. Jeff Buckley “Lilac Wine”  Another real star, born of another real star (at least in my universe, his father is one of my musical heroes).  He does a gorgeous version of this classic song.

The Anders:       Pomplamoose “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing”  I agree, turned a mainstream rock song into something different.  A little more depth than the original.

The Dark Elf:      David Bowie “Let’s Spend the Night Together”  I remember this one, of course.  Bowie was a pretty good rocker.  😉  Definitely the same song, definitely Bowie performing it. Gillian Welch “The Weight”  Classic song of course.  Nice rendering of it, it was made for this kind of presentation.  Punch Brothers “Brandenburg Concerto”  And now we have a classic-al song done in a bluegrass setting.  Wonderful!  Can’t help but wonder if Gabe Witcher (violinist here) is any relation to the harp builder, Jay Witcher.

Lewian:                 Senor Coconut  “The Robots” Done in a very robotic style, not familiar with the original, but this is fun to listen to.  Dominique Horwitz “Die Seerauber-Jen”  More Brecht covers…popular guy to cover, apparently, I remember hearing some in the 60’s.  This one, I don’t like as much.  Mona Mur “Surabaya Johnny”  Very dark sounding, as is fitting.  Grubenklangorchester “Bal sur Seine”  Cabaret style song, not being familiar with the original and also not being able to find a translation, can’t remark much on it, does sound interesting from your description.

Suitkees:             Van Halen “(Oh) Pretty Woman”  I really love the original of this song and am not a big VH fan, so not for me.  Kat Onoma “Radioactivity”  Like the broody music, kind of talk-y vocals, will this one return to my mind?  We’ll see.  An Pierle: “Paris s’eveille”  Another kind of talk-y vocalist, but she is much more engaging to my ear than the Kat Onoma vocalist.

I'm pretty sure they took it very seriously - just with a lot of humour, as f.e. in the "Rock Around the Clock" cover and their Eurovision song. In general I think they are seen as an important name in the history of electronic music, at least that's what my rock encyclopedia says.

I'm not that much into their music, but this one was a big hit. Very cool actually:

Well known non-prog artist (although BS is prog related) playing one of the most famous prog songs:

And then there is my favorite band who did the Feedback album that could provide a number of songs for this category, but I am going to add a lesser known early release of a Buddy Holly song.

And this one doesn't qualify, but it is one of my all-time favorite covers...that I didn't know was a cover until many years later.

Scott, "Green Manalishi" definitely qualifies! Neither band is on PA, which makes it fair gameSmile. I actually thought about nominating "Diamonds and Rust", which is another excellent cover (and one that Joan Baez herself endorsed).

The Rush covers are also outstanding. My personal favourite from the Feedback album is "Summertime Blues".

Judas Priest qualifies. It's ok for both to not be on PA. Their cover of Diamonds and Rust is also very good. I almost posted it.

I have to work on my reading comprehension skills.  Embarrassed  I missed the 3rd option.  I debated between Green Manalishi and Diamonds and Rust.  I think that Green Manalishi has been on the brain since the death of Peter Green.  I am trying to think of something that is less likely to be familiar to people as my actual nominee, but for now these are good placeholders.

Of the various covers of Sympathy for the Devil, I like the Motorhead one. Actually don't care for the GnR version. One of their best covers is Knockin' On Heaven's Door but not the studio version on Use Your Illusion. Their live versions are he best.

Agreed. Janis's interpretation makes the song even more poignant than it already is Heart.

Some more metal for the enjoyment of the headbangers among usWink. This cover of a Diamond Head song may be better known than the original:

I believe everyone here knows that my beloved Blue Oyster Cult have recorded a number of excellent covers. "Born to be Wild" would be a shoe-in here, but this time around I'll pick this cover by one of the best American metal bands of the late Seventies-early Eighties - the great (and very unlucky) Riot:

If you don't know anything about this band, their original singer, Guy Speranza (whom you can hear here) died of cancer in 2003. The guy who replaced him, Rhett Forrester, was shot in an attempted car hijack in 1994. To top everything off, the band's founder and main songwriter, Mark Reale, also passed away in 2012. For the metal-inclined among you, their third album, Fire Down Under, is very highly recommended.

This is probably my favourite of all cover versions - Manfred Mann's Earth Band got me into (prog) music, Nightingales & Bombers was the second album of them I heard. I loved this song at the age of 12 when it came to me, and I still love it now. Wonderful guitar solo by Mick Rogers.
It qualifies, but I'm currently thinking I won't nominate this because a) chances are most people know it here, b) it's mainstream prog which we normally don't have in these polls, and c) you will laugh at my ignorance but I have only bothered to listen to the original TODAY - it's actually totally different but also freakin' great. Dunno, the MMEB version seemed always enough to me.

I will nominate this if I get requests, otherwise it's gonna be John Cale or Senor Coconut (the Brecht things were not posted for nomination, rather because this was talked about).

Original is here, if you don't know it, you're in for a surprise.

DLR has some good original songs, and I love Van Halen, but he really had his best success with cover songs like that one and (Oh) Pretty Woman, and Dancing in the Streets and of course, You Really Got Me (which I once sat through a countdown of the top songs of all time and they listed this as #1, which kind of ticked me off since it was a cover song.  But it is a fine version of it).

OK, take 3 of take 1.  Initial thoughts on Scott's entries and a few more from some others:

Scott:  Ozzy “21st Century Schizoid Man”  definitely shows who has better vocals.  Good cover though, and I do like Ozzy (not so much his wife), and it’s decidedly Ozzy style.  Rush “Not Fade Away”  Another classic of a bygone era…his voice is so freaking high!  Fun to hear this.  Judas Priest “The Green Manalishi”  I loved Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, good cover, but I prefer the original here.  Glenn Tipton “Paint It Black”  More metal taking on a classic rock song, one of my favourite RS songs.  Loved that Brian Jones era the best.  They do a good job, but the original is more subtle and ominous, so more in my wheelhouse.  Guns N Roses “Sympathy for the Devil”  Again, not my favourite band and I do think the original was so original and clever.  King’s X “Manic Depression”  Pretty good cover of that.  My late husband and his son both enjoyed King’s X together, and introduced me to them.  😊  Yngwie Malmsteen “Spanish Castle Magic”  This one is typical Yngwie style, lotsa lotsa notes, I prefer theKing’s X cover of the two.  Alanis Morissette “King of Pain”  I agree, I like songs that are totally stripped down like this.  And she gives it her own sound.  Quiet Riot “Cum  On Feel The Noize”  I remember Slade very well, from back in the day.  Followed by “Mama Weer All Crazee Now”  and Britny Fox with “Gudbuy T Jane”…I haven’t heard so much hard rock and heavy metal since my bus days. The Lovemongers “Battle of Evermore” Probably my favourite Zeppelin song, esp because of Sandy Denny’s appearance on it.  Interesting take on it.   I think my vote would go to King’s X of your selections at this point, anyway.  I quite enjoyed that.

Raff:  .  Metal Church “Highway Star”  Crazy fast with those metal vocals…still, I prefer the original.  Slayer “Dissident Aggressor”  Very heavy cover of a very heavy song. Metallica “Am I Evil”  More metal, well done.  Not really my thing (you’ve probably figured that out, I like some metal, but burn out on it after a point).  Riot “Born To Be Wild”  Yeah, these guys did have a rough ride.  Steppenwolf’s classic song, done with a higher voice and a bit faster. I kind of like my metal to have that heavy slow feel, more like Blue Cheer (which was actually a psych band, as is the way Steppenwolf began)  than pyrotechnics like this.  But that’s just me, sales tell a completely different story.  David Lee Roth “California Girls”  DLR at his hammiest.   Huge hit for the Beach Boys and for him.  He had quite the good sense of humour about himself, I think.

The Anders…. Sort Sol “Ode To Billie Joe”  definitely a most original cover, in a style unexpected from the original.  😊

Lewian.  John Cale “Heartbreak Hotel”  Ah, something I know for comparison.  A day after the anniversary of Elvis’ death, too. I like this!  Done in a completely different way and still suitable for the words.  The Money of the Gun “Stairway to Heaven,” done in Doors style.  Very clever!  Manfred Mann’s Earth Band “Visionary Mountains” I don’t think I ever knew this was a cover.  Nice song.

Mike:  The Residents “Hound Dog,” “Stars and Stripes Forever” and “It’s A Man’s World”  Done in true Residents fashion.  I like “It’s A Man’s World” the best, made me grin, totally forgot about this.

The Dark Elf:  The classics of Hendrix’s version of “All Along The Watchtower,” Joe & Leon’s “The Letter,” and Humble Pie “I Don’t Need No Doctor,”  each one absolute classic.  I still am sad I never got to see Hendrix live, but did see Joe Cocker many, many, many shows, also Leon Russell.  And Humble Pie played with ELP at the Hollywood Bowl when I saw them there in 1971.  😊

Cristi: Riot “Racing With The Devil On A Spanish Highway”  Definitely prefer this to their Steppenwolf cover.  Cleaner sound to me, less pyrotechnics.

You know, Nickie, I am a not-really-closet metalheadLOL. In the Eighties, I was much more into metal and hard rock than prog, and I still like a nice helping of heaviness with my music. However, I am not a big fan of modern metal, neither progressive nor other kinds.

Speaking of prog metal, our "dear friends" Dream Theater have released a bunch of cover albums/songs - some of them not bad at all (especially those without vocals Wink). Unfortunately, most of the material they covered is also here on PA, so they wouldn't be eligible.

So, we are up to 91 videos in the "all" playlist. Estimating an average of 5 minutes per song, that's well over 7 hours of music. I've been putting together "all" playlists since the Guilty Pleasures poll and that had the most at 105. It looks like this one will break that total.

I haven't listened to all but some really good stuff. I'm shuffle playing through, and it's producing some interesting sequences of music while I work.

I love that everyone here is interested in so many different kinds of music.  I didn't think there would be quite so much metal in this poll, but here it is.  I've been around a lot of it, and as you know, my second husband manages Bill Ward (who still is releasing his solo works from time to time, in his own way), who is one of the loveliest people I've ever met....and why I have strong feelings about Ozzy's other half. Confused  Second husband's best friend (now sadly no longer with us) was also Robert Plant's "personal" assistant for years, so I have heard some stories!

I do like some of the prog metal, most notably Riverside and I also enjoy Mariusz Dudek's other work and I like King's X.  For me, though, I'm more old school when listening to Sabbath and the like from the early days.

Take on Lorenzo's nomination:

Lorenzo:  Patti Smith “So You Want To Be A Rock and Roll Star”  A most excellent choice.  It keeps the slippy, slidy sound of the original, yet brings a punk edge to it.  She’s just brilliant.

You are the best, man!
  I second that!

ThirdedSmile! I've been listening for the past couple of days, and have found a lot to like. Some truly inventive reinterpretations of classic songsClap! To reassure you, I will very probably NOT nominate a metal song, because I know that metal is not everyone's cup of tea. Anyway, today is only Tuesday, so we still have plenty of time to listen and think about our own nominations.

On an unrelated note, I agree about your dislike of Mrs. Osbourne. I just found out that, on top of everything else, she was a Brexit supporter, and complained about the UK having too many immigrants - all the while being one herselfDead.

Hi everyone. I've been having a very lousy week and don't have the disposition to listen to every song but still want to participate in this poll. That "The Robots" cover made my day last Sunday though.

Since there's a cover of a Deep Purple song why not have a great cover by Deep Purple?

I've been listening to The Cardigans quite a lot lately and they have a couple of Black Sabbath. This one's my favourite:

[/QUOTE]  I am not afraid of metal!  LOL

Yeah, Sharon.  She was very sweet to us until Bill decided to stand for everyone getting the same pay for Sabbath tours (on the principal that this was how the band always did it prior to Ozzy's solo career).  This was back in the 80's and into the 90's when he certainly still could, his health won't allow the rigors of touring anymore, but that is much more recent than when I was married to 2nd husband.  Some of her emails to my husband after that were not quite so nice, to put it mildly....

Before she changed her tune, she did send us a really nice new baby basket full of goodies when my son was born.  I use it to this day for my laundry basket....and that was over 27 years ago!

My thoughts on Samuel's nominees....Nice to see you in here, sorry you are having a tough week.  Ouch
But I'm really glad you posted these!

Samuel:  Deep Purple “Hey Joe”  I do know this one, and many of the covers of it.  It’s a great song and they do it justice in their own way.  The Cardigans “Iron Man”  Wow, a really different version of this song.  I like what they did with it!

I believe you'll all be happy to know that my other half is getting his submissions ready, and is going to post them soon!Smile In the meantime, I've thought of at least another two or three songs I like, but at this point I'll keep them for a future edition, or the playlist is going to explode LOL.

Love the Black Sabbath covers even though I had heard that cool Cardigans cover of Iron Man before, it's a favorite.  Here is another one, but it doesn't qualify because both bands are in the Archives, but it's still a good one for those that are interested.

Ulver - "Solitude"

And that Judas Priest cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Green Manalishi" is from my favorite Priest album...thanks for posting that one.

Raff should enjoy this BOC rarity (I bet she's already heard it though):

Blue Oyster Cult - "Betty Lou's Got a New Pair of Shoes"

(Uh oh...I may have overloaded the postings for this thread ExclamationNukeExclamationCool

Annie Haslam's sublime version of Genesis' "Ripples" Heart

If it's Annie solo, then the song is eligible to be entered in the poll, since she's not in the databaseSmile.

And Mike, I definitely know that BOC cover! We have all of their albums, and they're always on heavy rotation hereWink. Looking forward to their new album, which should be released in October.

I had forgot about the Slayer cover of Dissident Aggressor.  It reminded me of this other JP cover...although I guess it technically isn't a cover:

I'm doing random listening now. Highlights up to now (out of about ten): Carol Tatum - Nothing else Matters, and Patti Smith - So You Want To Be a Rock'n Roll Star (the other Patti Smith one may be even better if I remember it correctly, but hasn't come up yet - that lady can do no wrong).
Edit, few tracks further in:
Tori Amos' Smells Like Teen Spirit is really great, except I know it already too well.

I didn't realise a song was only eligible for this poll if it's NOT in the PA database.

The main purpose of these polls is to explore music that, while not in the PA database, might be of interest to the participants. For this particular poll, a song is eligible if:

- the band or artist who released the original is on PA/the band or artist who did the cover is not;
- the band or artist who released the original is not on PA/the band or artist who did the cover is;
- neither the band or artist who released the original nor the band or artist who did the cover is on PA.

As I said in my introductory post, if both original and cover band/artist are on PA, the song is not eligible.
