I think I'm going to stick with the first one of my choices. I typically have kind of stuck with the "original" idea, of a main nomination with 2 alternates, and an option to change my mind by time to advise on final nomination and voting, although I added Carol Tatum later, as so many were posting metal covers. I also like bring lesser-knowns to the table, although RT is probably kind of famous for being a known-not-known performer. Also, tried to stick with well-known songs being covered. That all being said, Sileas with "Ain't No Sunshine," will be my choice to nominate. I think they really made this their own in a completely different way than the original, not just a remake, but gave it another layer.

Can't really understand your rant here. Manfred Mann is a great interpreter of other people's songs, so why should he not record them, put them on a record and sell them? If they do sell, good for him and good for the original, because some people may revisit the original because of him and also I assume that original composers are properly (meaning "as the law requires") paid for his sales. He has made me pretty happy with some of his cover versions and I actually respect him for saying, I'm good at some things but some other people are better at composing, so I use their songs to do my band's magic on them.

I was lucky and found most of Manfred Mann's discography on vinyl recently, but I am not yet completely familiar with all of the albums yet, admittedly. I must say that I really have enjoyed all of their albums that I have heard, even their later stuff. It's a band that I have wanted to learn more about, but for some reason, I had a hard time locating excellent copies until now. Anyway, I listed it because I am not as familiar with it yet, but I still think it is great. I'm embarrassed I don't know it as well as I should, but there are so many bands demanding my attention, and I'm elated that I was finally able to collect most of their albums.

I'm not sure which one to nominate of the ones I've posted either. Other than the wonderful reviews by Nicki, I haven't seen any feedback, so I'll probably screw up again and nominate something that no one will like
I also apologize for not giving my opinions more openly and not participating in the thread more, but my time is limited here for the time being as I explained a few weeks ago. Right now it's a toss up between Jeff Buckley "Lilac Wine", Foghat "Take Me to the River" and Ulver "Solitude" but that might even change.

Mike, I apologize for the lack of feedback. I find these days it's hard for me to write about music, and I don't comment as much as I used to do because I only seem to come up with platitudes. In any case, I liked all of your suggestions very much. In particular, I found Chris Cornell's cover of "Billie Jean" very moving, and so different from the original. I also loved the Jeff Buckley and Suzanne Vega songs. The thing is, there was so much music this time, and most of it excellent, that it was easy to lose track of things.

Yes there was a lot of music posted this time, and I'm one of the guilty ones, thus making it tougher to decide which one of the many postings I used. But there are so many covers I have been wanting to share, and I keep remembering others that I have heard. We definitely need another covers poll (or maybe more). Maybe themed cover polls would help all of us from over-posting? As far as the Chris Cornell cover....I remember when he did that cover a few years back that so many artists were impressed by it that they covered his version of the cover, until it got to the point that everyone forgot who started that slow version in the first place. So, if it seems to some that they may have heard that version by other artists too many time already, as far as I know, he was the first to do it like that, and he not only made the song his own, but he brought out more meaning in that song and highlighted MJ's lyrics like never before.

I decided I won't listen to a song before I have heard the original versions. Meaning that I had to check out "So You Want To Be A Rock'n Roll Star" by the Byrds and "Never Let Me Down" by Depeche Mode. The other songs I knew in advance.

I am going with the first languorous one I posted: The Unthanks - Sea Song (Robert Wyatt)
My first video is almost always my pick. Although I suspect that that version of ELP’s “Trilogy” would be more popular and in that case I actually prefer it to the original — I also would expect that quite a few would know it already; I know I’ve posted it many times over the years. By the way, I should have also thought of that the Cardigans BS cover as I posted it a topic of mine recently. I’ve also been very into The Cardigans of late, and a lot of 90s indie/ art/ chamber pop music. Edited by Logan - August 20 2020 at 13:41 |

More entries added! We're up to 8 poll choices so far. Hope we'll get at least 15. These polls are really like a fresh breath of air in a forum dominated by Yes and Genesis threads .

It has become a very long list indeed, but I listened to all of them these last days. For the diversity of the short list I nominate: Kat Onoma - Radioactivity (Kraftwerk)

I am down to choosing one of three for my nominee (Akasha (feat. Neneh Cherry) "Sweet Child of Mine", Placebo "Running Up That Hill", Charles Bradley "Changes") for a number of different reasons. I'll think about it some more and have a decision tonight.
In the meantime, with Friday coming up, here is this cover of The Cure's "Friday I'm In Love" by Puddles Pity Party done in the style of Springsteen. Puddles is literally a clown and sings with a voice made for Broadway. |

Speaking of Friday, this Bob Dylanesque cover of Rebecca Blacks’s “Friday” is I think a great improvement on the original.
The original in case anyone somehow never heard it: |

So here are my thoughts about the first nominations: Living Colour - Memories Can't Wait Fear of Music by Talking Heads is one of my all time favourite albums (actually just above Remain in Light), and as such it is almost holy to me. What was originally a dark piece of art rock fuelled with Eno-elegance is here more of an extroverted across-the-stage rock song a la the 90's (even though the cover is from the late 80's). I must admit I am not intrigued by it the same way as with the original version, but tastes differ. Patti Smith - So You Want To Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star Unlike the one above, I think this one is closer to my taste than the original version. Not so much to say about except perhaps I prefer Patti Smith a little more unpolished (a few notes have to be off-key to give it the edge I somehow miss here). The Smashing Pumpkins - Never Let Me Down This is definitely different from the original. Music like Depeche Mode is not really for me (cold and synthetic), so it is nice to hear the song with a little more warmth. I like it much better than the original. Live - I Walk the Line Interestingly, this one changes the original Johnny Cash song which is in a major key and turns it into minor. The question is if one should read anything into it, but I guess the purpose is to make it darker. Really like both the original Johnny Cash recording and this version. Ozzy Osbourne - 21st Century Schizoid Man Of course Ozzy would have to do a version of this song, even if I am kind of sad it was not with Black Sabbath. It doesn't sound that different from King Crimson actually. It largely sounds like the same arrangement until after the second verse. Production-wise I like the more dry and analog sound of the original recording better, but overall it's pretty much on par with it. Sileas - Ain't No Sunshine I had already heard several versions of this song, but this one definitely stands out. It's very moody and laid back, and I like the simplicity a lot. It should be a strong candidate for one of my three votes. The Unthanks - Sea Song Again I really like the simple set up of this version. Wouldn't choose between the two versions in this case. Kat Onoma - Radioactivity It's quite bold to do a non-electronic version of a Kraftwerk song. But I guess I should listen to it some times to really appreciate it. I like that it builds slowly.

A definite improvement. I think the first and only time I heard Rebecca Black's Friday was actually on PA in a worst pop songs of all time (or something like that) thread a couple of years back.

Sorry, none of yours seem to have come up when I went randomly through the playlist. It's hard to differentiate. I'm a Suzanne Vega fan and love that Jeff Buckley album; both of these are very good; the Ulver one may compete with these (I hadn't heard it before, which gives it some kind of voting advantage). The Foghat one is not bad but not really my cup of tea. Surely you don't need to feel embarrassed by your lack of knowledge of a Manfred Mann's Earth Band album... you'd be surprised how many things I don't know that people here talk about all the time. Or even how big a percentage of Peter Hammill's discography I don't know even though I consider myself a fan of that man and have seen him live four times. But I distract...

I think I stick with Senor Coconuts' Robots, which had most positive mentions. Visionary Mountains may be less known than I thought, but it doesn't feel like a cover to me, knowing it so much better than the original. John Cale, Mona Mur, and Domonique Horwitz would all have been worthy selections but ultimately it has to boil down to one...

If it helps to eliminate a choice, you posted that Ulver wasn't eligible because Sabbath is on PA. I do like it, but I own the Ulver album. The Buckley one is good, and I really liked Cornell's cover of Billie Jean. It really is haunting and emotional. I think I had heard it before but can't recall for sure. Foghat's cover of "Take Me to the River" but it's hard when the Talking Head's version is IMO one of the best covers. And the Resident's were fun. Also, thanks for posting Duo de Twang, it's one of the albums with Les Claypool that I haven't gotten around to. I enjoyed that cover of "Battle for New Orleans".
