Rick Wakeman's scintillating Piano Vibrations and stunning keyboard wizardly have been entertaining and enthralling us now for half a century. He's almost as legendary in modern times as The Six Wives of Henry VIII were in Tudor times. Let's Journey to the Centre of the Earth with Rick and explore some of the Myths and Legends of his incredible career. Some of the myths surrounding Rick Wakeman may have No Earthly Connection with reality, but that's how prog legends are created. His symphonic masterpieces have all the magnificent majesty of the towering White Rock of the Matterhorn, and for any self-respecting YES fan not to have at least one Rick Wakeman album in their collection is *almost* as embarrassing as admitting to a past Criminal Record. As we listen again to Rick's rapturous Rhapsodies, it's as well to remember that The Burning issue in 1984 for Rock & Roll Prophet Rick Wakeman was whether he'd ever make any profit again after staging the spectacular King Arthur on Ice in 1975 at enormous expense during an increasing Cost of Living crisis.

To be, or not to be, that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take Arms against a Sea of troubles, Have a Cigar, my friend, and make it a Hamlet.

Rick Wakeman is one of progressive rock's brightest lights. I haven't watched the video of that concert, but I will, and soon!

I'm watching it right now and it's just as good as any Yes concert I've ever seen. ![]() I only discovered Rick Wakeman's "Made in Cuba" concert on YouTube today, and I thought why am I sitting here through this endless stream of YouTube ads which are ruining the concert, when I could be sharing the concert with my friends on ProgArchives and watching it totally ad-free.

Have you watched the 2001 Live in Buenos Aires concert with Rick & Adam on keyboards, and Damian Wilson on lead vocals? It was also released on DVD. So much Caped goodness! 'Boards galore!

I never knew that, although it seemed like the obvious title for a Rick Wakeman tribute thread.

Wakeman is one of my very favourite artists, and has some of my favourite albums indeed. I would actually rank more Wakeman albums with 5 stars than Yes albums. One thing I admire of his live shows is that he usually adapts the music he's choosing to be played with what he has available in the band, and won't use overdubs to fill in orchestrations or choirs or whatever (I think that Made in Cuba is one of the exceptions, though, using tapes for the choirs from Cathedral in the Sky).

I once made a 4 hour round trip by car to see his 'stand up' show on a school night . Great musician and great personality. His stories about touring in the seventies are absolutely hilarious. The man that put the 'fun' into prog for sure!

The highlight of the Cuban show for me was where Rick took his keytar out into the audience and then brought a girl back up on stage with him. It gave the Cuban security guy a bit of a scare though.

Wakeman rules...but I actually think Moraz was a better fit for Yes!

For some reason, I think Rick Wakeman's talent, contributions, personality were at the core of what made YES fantastic in the first place. It doesn't mean I don't respect Squire-Anderson-Howe LLP, of course I do and would never replace them... but Rick's shining moments elevated already great music to stratosphere. Sounds he created made YES music twice as picturesque, imo. And his no-nonsense, a bit of a jerk attitude balanced things out a bit I'm sure! I believe they made a mistake in 1973 with Topographics dominated by Jon and Steve ideas; if Rick had more say in it, we'd get more of his solos perhaps... or reduced length at least. It's great he came back for GFTO, as well as briefly in the 90s, this is the go-to keyboard wizard for Yes... and his 70s output rivals Hackett and the best in the genre (Wives, Journey, Myths, Connection and Criminal). I also have a soft spot for Wakeman With Wakeman: Romance of the Victorian Age (1994). A bit quiet and simplistic, but atmosphere is great. Feel free to recommend me his lesser known albums

Considering how many albums he's made, this should have been much longer.

I'm seen with Jon Anderson and on a solo tour, he is indeed a very funny man. His story about being mistaken for Richard Clayderman is a classic, as was his reference to the well-known Yes song "Owner of a Horse and Cart".

I know, but I didn't think anyone would bother to read it if I'd made my intro too long.

I'd love to recommend some of Rick's lesser-known albums, but so far, I only have his classic 1970's albums in a 5-CD box set. I'm hoping to discover a lot more Rick Wakeman albums though, now I've started this tribute thread.
