I'm pretty sure they took it very seriously - just with a lot of humour, as f.e. in the "Rock Around the Clock" cover and their Eurovision song. In general I think they are seen as an important name in the history of electronic music, at least that's what my rock encyclopedia says.

I'm not that much into their music, but this one was a big hit. Very cool actually:

Well known non-prog artist (although BS is prog related) playing one of the most famous prog songs:

And then there is my favorite band who did the Feedback album that could provide a number of songs for this category, but I am going to add a lesser known early release of a Buddy Holly song.

And this one doesn't qualify, but it is one of my all-time favorite covers...that I didn't know was a cover until many years later.

Scott, "Green Manalishi" definitely qualifies! Neither band is on PA, which makes it fair gameSmile. I actually thought about nominating "Diamonds and Rust", which is another excellent cover (and one that Joan Baez herself endorsed).

The Rush covers are also outstanding. My personal favourite from the Feedback album is "Summertime Blues".

Judas Priest qualifies. It's ok for both to not be on PA. Their cover of Diamonds and Rust is also very good. I almost posted it.

Edit: Haha. I posted nearly what Raff posted at the same time.

I have to work on my reading comprehension skills.  Embarrassed  I missed the 3rd option.  I debated between Green Manalishi and Diamonds and Rust.  I think that Green Manalishi has been on the brain since the death of Peter Green.  I am trying to think of something that is less likely to be familiar to people as my actual nominee, but for now these are good placeholders.

I've exceeded my quota on suggestions, but if someone else wants to suggest a metal band with some excellent covers, Anthrax would be a good one, though I would be familiar with most of the covers they've done.

I wasn't familiar with the KC cover by Ozzy, but found it very much to my taste. Well doneClap!

Another outstanding metal cover of a hard rock classic:

And a song that not even Slayer could make any heavier:

I could probably post hundreds of these covers as well.  This is one of my favorite Rolling Stones' songs from one of my favorite guitarists.

And since I posted a Stones' cover, I might as well post this one too.

We'll probably need to have another covers poll, as I said in an earlier post. There's just so much great stuff to choose from!

No doubt. I have thought of so many more since this started. Could even do one of the "worst" covers. Some that are so bad, they have a certain appeal. I am thinking of William Shatner in particular.

One more harp one, out of competition, but all of the metal covers made me remember this one.  Carol Tatum (Angels of Venice), with Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters"

Of the various covers of Sympathy for the Devil, I like the Motorhead one. Actually don't care for the GnR version. One of their best covers is Knockin' On Heaven's Door but not the studio version on Use Your Illusion. Their live versions are he best.

Big Brother and the Holding Company's "Summertime," is also one of the best covers ever, imho.  Not posting it here, as I'm sure everyone knows it.

I agree.

I did not know Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City by Whitesnake is actually a cover, originally by a guy named Bobby Bland.

Agreed. Janis's interpretation makes the song even more poignant than it already is Heart.

Some more metal for the enjoyment of the headbangers among usWink. This cover of a Diamond Head song may be better known than the original:

Metallica play some great covers on their Garage Days album too.  I had never heard Breadfan until I heard the Metallica version.  Same with their cover of Stone Cold Crazy from Queen.

I believe everyone here knows that my beloved Blue Oyster Cult have recorded a number of excellent covers. "Born to be Wild" would be a shoe-in here, but this time around I'll pick this cover by one of the best American metal bands of the late Seventies-early Eighties - the great (and very unlucky) Riot:

If you don't know anything about this band, their original singer, Guy Speranza (whom you can hear here) died of cancer in 2003. The guy who replaced him, Rhett Forrester, was shot in an attempted car hijack in 1994. To top everything off, the band's founder and main songwriter, Mark Reale, also passed away in 2012. For the metal-inclined among you, their third album, Fire Down Under, is very highly recommended.
