    Posted: August 15 2020 at 09:16
After missing the last couple of polls, I'm back in the saddle with the promised (or threatenedWink?) poll about cover songs. I've always had a thing about covers - the good ones, of courseLOL! - and am curious to see how other people tastes run regarding this particular "subgenre" of music.

First of all, no rush at all! I posted this now because I had some time, but everyone who'd like to participate can take as long as they need to think about their own nominations and post them here. As this is August, and a lot of people may be away from home, we'll let this run all week through next weekend.

There is a very wide range of music to be explored, so this time around I'll make things easy, and set only a couple of rules. Eligible songs should fall into these three categories:

- the band or artist who released the original is on PA/the band or artist who did the cover is not;
- the band or artist who released the original is not on PA/the band or artist who did the cover is;
- neither the band or artist who released the original nor the band or artist who did the cover is on PA.

This means, for instance, that a Beatles cover by Genesis would NOT be eligible, because both bands are on PA. In any case, with these rules, a whole lot of great music will be eligible to be posted in this poll. Hope this is clear enoughSmile!

To avoid cluttering the previous post, I'll post a few of my selections here.

This is one of those covers that, in my view, are even better than the already very good original (by Talking Heads). Living Colour are an incredible band:

A legendary version of Them's best-known song:

And another one that almost beats the original (by Stevie Wonder):

More to come later! In the meantime, enjoySmile!

Is it ok for the cover artist and the original both not be on PA? For example, neither RHCP nor Stevie Wonder are on PA.

This is a dangerous category for me. I could easily post a 100+ videos. I'll need to have some restraint. But I am stuck home due to rain and flood warnings.

Sorry about thatEmbarrassed! I just updated my post to clarify that "neither original nor cover artist on PA" is eligible. I should have made it clearer, rather than expecting it to be a given. In any case, two out of the three songs I posted fall into this third category (of all the bands/artists involved, only Talking Heads are on PA).

In an earlier interactive poll, I posted Ennio Morricone - Magic and Ecstasy. That was the original to the following cover, which I nominate:

Snakefinger - Magic and Ecstasy

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along The Watchtower

For my third cover, I choose one from my home country:

Zoot - Eleanor Rigby

The Voivod cover of Pink Floyd is a really good one, but both are on PA.

I have lot to choose from. In general, the original song being covered has to be good to begin with as all of the songs posted so far show. Sometimes a cover succeeds by being a better version of the original. I also like covers that are in style different from the original, or incorporate unique/different instruments.

So, starting off, are some covers of Guns N' Roses "Sweet Child O' Mine" and I am going plural.

First up is my nominee by Akasha (featuring Neneh Cherry). This is an electro-pop take on the song.

The rest are some different takes on the song that I enjoy. This next one I like for the video as much as the Indian-fusion instrumental take. The video offers a window into another part of the world that I am not familiar with and I really enjoyed watching. And, there's no sitar.

This one is an instrumental version by acoustic guitar virtuoso Luca Stricagnoli.

On the novelty side of things, here are the Heimatdamisch with their Oberkreiner version.

I'll conclude from the movie "Captain Fantastic" starring Vigo Mortensen.

I'll post my alternates next.

Some alternates.

Making a second appearance in this poll. The Heimatdamisch's cover of AC/DC's "Highway to Hell":

Placebo's cover of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill":

For Nickie: harps and horses. Camille and Kennerly's (aka The Harp Twins) cover of Iron Maiden's Run to the Hills:

Hannah Williams and the Affirmations's cover of Led Zeppelin's "Dazed and Confused":

Of course, is Led Zeppelin the original artist? Page played the song with the Yardbirds, but there are only live recordings. Until 2010, Page had sole songwriting credit. An out of court settled lawsuit has resulted in the credit going to Page, inspired by Jake Holmes. Here's the 1967 Holmes 'inspiration':

Plant did write his own lyrics but he couldn't get songwriting credit because of some prior recording contract.

All the Pink Floyd covers by Voivod are outstanding, and even if they cannot be nominated it's always good to remember them. I would also agree with "All Along the Watchtower" being the best cover everHeart, or at the very least one of the best.

Now that we are just throwing ideas around, and getting to know music we probably didn't know before, here's another couple of great covers for you. As Greg posted something by Siouxsie and the Banshees, here's another song by them - arguably one of the very best Beatles covers ever:

And another of my favourite women singers, Annie Lennox with an excellent Neil Young cover:

I know once I post this, I'll come up with a dozen.  But these are the first that came to my mind.  For covers, I kind of like the artist to "make it their own."

First choice, Sileas with Bill Wither's "Aint' No Sunshine (When She's Gone).  Not one but two harps and haunting vocals.

Second up is Richard Thompson with Britney Spears' smash hit, "Oops! I Did It Again:"

Third is Mary Fahl's cover of Joni Mitchell's "Urge For Going."  Tom Rush also did an excellent cover of this one.

And just because it is so good and she delivers it so perfectly chillingly, here is Tori Amos covering Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit."  I figured most would have known this one, so am not entering it, just in case anyone hasn't heard it, you should.

Nickie, I used to have the Tori Amos album of covers, Strange Little Girls. Unfortunately, it got lost (together with another few CDs) during the move from Italy. Everything else I'd had shipped got here safely, with the exception of that handful of CDs. One of the great mysteries of life LOL! Anyway, that album is a bit of a mixed bag, including some excellent covers and others that are a bit meh.

Anyway, a last song from me for today, which maybe Christian will appreciate, seen as the original version is in German ("Seeräuber Jenny", or "Pirate Jenny", from The Threepenny Opera by Brecht/Weill):
