My nominated choice, at least unless it is said that it isn't, and I won't now, so to be absolutely clear, this Utopia one is my official nomination (it's listed as Utopia 2 in the video because it's from the second series/ season):
Cristobal Tapia de Veer - "Lucidity Gone" - from Utopia If you are only listing the show name, then you might want to list it as Utopia 2 in the poll options. --------------------------------------------------------- Some alternates: If soundtracks from artists in PA are allowed: Mogwai - "Fridge Magic" off Les Revenants Murray Gold - "Heaven Sent - The Shepherd's Boy" Doctor Who Angelo Badalamenti - "Laura Palmer's Theme" - Twin Peaks Was also considering this Zbigniew Preisner from the superb Dekalog. Also considered Inspector Morse theme, Chocky and The Prisoner theme. Edited by Logan - July 17 2020 at 16:27 |

Here's my first:
The Jones Sisters - "Comet" - Theme from "Perpetual Grace Ltd." The Jones Sisters did all of the music for the TV series and the album that resulted is pretty great. This is another song from that series, however, since it isn't the theme song, I guess it doesn't qualify, but it's a great song nevertheless if you are interested. #2. Iris De Ment - "Let the Mystery Be" - Theme from "The Leftovers"
#3. The Brian Jonestown Massacre - "Straight Up and Down" (excerpt) - Theme from "Boardwalk Empire" EDIT: This is the one I'm going to post for everyone to vote on. I think it best captures the real feel of the series. So, vote for this! Here's the full version of The Brain Jonestown Massacre "Straight Up and Down" if anyone wants to hear it all. Thanks! I believe they only have the one album which contains all of the songs they did for the series. Not a bad song on the entire album. I've been wanting to post one of their songs for quite some time and this was a good excuse to do it.

Thanks for the comments, Nickie. By the way, none of mine are the "main" (opening themes) themes, and I know Twin Peaks "main theme" was mentioned already. Utopia music will probably be my choice (dark show) because it's rather unusual for one thing. The soundtrack works well in the series, and I find it interesting outside of it. Les revenants (The Returned) is one of my very favourite shows of the last decade (it has two seasons of eight episodes each). Many loved the first season but not the second, I loved both. It's a supernatural-themed sort of French drama, and I found it very moving, atmospheric, and compelling. As for Doctor Who, I haven't watched it for quite a while, and getting into it does require an investment of time. I grew up with the show. Of New Who, the revival that begun in 2005, Heaven Sent (from which the music I chose) is my favourite episode. That episode is mostly a one man show and is one I found powerful, moving and beautiful. It's the kind of thing that I had been hoping for from Doctor Who for some time (I wouldn't call it kiddie fare). I do love Peter Capaldi's Doctor -- has gravitas. Speaking of kiddie fare, just remembered another favouritie of mine (wonderful British serial for kids, and adults, based on a John Wyndham novel). John Hyde - "Chocky's Theme - Chocky Micky, if you prefer going with the main title theme (opening music), then my choice for Utopia could be this. EDIT: I would rather go with the one that I marked with Nukes (my first video choice), so this from season/series one is NOT my Utopia nomination. Edited by Logan - July 17 2020 at 23:18 |

Micky: The Sopranos, Barney Miller, and Keeping Up Appearances I know. I never got that much into KUA, but my parents loved the show. I got a friend into it accidentally by videotaping a show (maybe an episode of Black Adder or Red Dwarf) and accidentally not turning off record. By the way, the Keeping Up Appearances video as an embed is not working for me, but it works when you click to see it at the youtube site.
Snicolette: Seen that lassie show on TV in reruns before, but not in ages. I very much enjoyed the music. I certainly know the name "My Friend, Flicka” and think I have seen it. That music is so evocative of its time and culture to me (and that's a plus for classics), Daktari I don't think I've seen – fun. Raff: Lungo il fiume e sull'acqua 's Vincent. Love it. I love Vincent. My wife would often song that song to me and say that I remind her of Vincent. Those were more innocent days, Lewian: Your video is not working for me either as an embed or on youtube. It shows the picture but it says that the video is not available. Not sure if it's exactly the same, but this works for me and I love it (very much my style). Nogbad: the Twin Peaks theme. I had Twin Peaks lined up for this series too, but thinking that Laura Palmer's Theme would likely be my top choice. I love that and adore Twin Peaks, which I only just finished watching completely not that long ago. The series just blew-me-away. Better late than never. Nothing substantive to say and stopping there for now, at least based on what has been posted so far. EDIT -- continuing: Mathman, I know your three choices very well, and The Rockford Files one is my favourite. Also, that Stairway to Gilligan's Island is neat-o. The Anders: Somehow missed commenting on the Matador one before. That is quite simple, elegant, traditional and evocative. jamesbaldwin: Know Happy Days and The Jeffersons really well. Like the Monk one. Logan: (me talking to myself). I am tempted to go with the Chocky one that I didn't mention in my first post in this thread, but probably will go with Utopia even if I suspect most here would not appreciate it, and some would actively dislike it. I do love the Mogwai soundtrack for Les revenants, but we usually exclude artists listed in PA for such things. rushfan4: Knew both of those even though I never watched much of either show. I hadn't known that Barenaked Ladies did the Big Bang Theory theme song even though I had been into that band (especially in the 90s). Their "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" cover first got me interested in the band. TCat: From The Jones Sisters the second one resonated more with me. Haven't seen the show. I don't know if the second doesn't qualify. Enjoyed "The Leftovers" and Boardwalk Empire" ones too. Edited by Logan - July 15 2020 at 11:01 |

I've been wanting to post one of their songs for quite some time and this was a good excuse to do it. [/QUOTE] They are very compelling. I am not necessarily a big fan of country-ish music, but I also don't let that stop me from admiring what is outstanding, to my ears. You have a good tap onto this kind of thing. Love getting to know what everyone hears outside of prog, and I also don't mind hearing what is in that sort of groove, either. The discovery of something that grabs you and moves you, no matter the genre, is what drives me.

I like to think that it's because I'm melancholic AND beautiful. Or at least my ears are attractive in their own peculiar miserable way. Melancholic music I often find satisfyingly beautiful -- it resonates with me. A lot of cheery music feels superficial because it doesn't touch me. |

Hey Mick, guys and ladies I'm gonna indulge heavily and travel straight to my childhood in the 80's... "Verano Azul", ("Blue Summer") - is a beyond beautiful Spanish series from the early 80's that aired here in Latin America and a few other places as well. It narrates the adventures of a gang of friends on the coastal town of Nerja in Andalucía, South Spain, and how they go about growing up with each experience they have. The music I find it beautifully upbringing.. something, I think, difficult to attain, and don't know.. maybe reminiscent of Spanish music, Chabrier's 'España' suite, zarzuela, etc.? Captain Future - Main Theme (Latin version). Absolutely love the series and the music! I mean not only the main theme; I find it truely progressive.. if somehow a bit Disco.. (progressive disco? ) The main track in particular is different to the english one, and the singer happens to be Chilean, nicknamed 'Capitán Memo'. He not only did Captain Future's but many of the animated series back then. For nostalgics my age, or if you want to peek inside the (for me, superb) incidental music into the series, that are mainly instrumental songs (it is not detached from the screenplay though, but I find it great that way!), I found this site's mp3 with much effort! Robotech. This one would only be the main theme, that is 'till 1:36 (but if you like it/didn't know it, the battle/bad guys themes are awesome too.. 2:50, 7:38) And.. maybe something a bit more conventional... and/or recent. Band of Brothers Did a long-awaited rerun recently, this time with my wife.. (I don't know how I managed to convince her) ...what an experience. Crying guaranteed. And the music totally captivated us. (Note: just in case, please take it for what it is.. a beautiful soundtrack of a tv series that is in turn an ode to soldiers, sacrifice, courage and heroism. I recall some threads around 3 or 4 years ago here on PA about war movies so.. I'd think is not a problem). I'd like to suggest naming the entries by the show's name, for clarity and easy remembering.. and maybe mentioning the details as a side note, somewhere.. 1st. post or so. On that point, it would be great also afterwards creating an index with all the links on the first post to the exact posts for each nomination. Edited by Machinemessiah - July 14 2020 at 23:22 |

MachineMessiah: Had a listen, the Verano Azul is quite delightful. The Captain Futuro and Robotech 2014 (I had seen Robotech) remind me of the mid 1970s Japanese Space Battleship Yamato, which leads me to be reminded of my favourite music from that (I am a sucker for such vocals and it has an air of pathos):
EDIT: Forgot to comment on Band of Brothers. That I know and like. I like that this can be a trip down memory lane both for the poster, and in various cases, for the listener. I expected to feel nostalgic due to this thread, and to discover new and pleasing, poignant, and/or interesting and surprising stuff to me along the way. Edited by Logan - July 14 2020 at 23:35 |
