For this weeks installment of Lorenzo's Grill and Micky's Bar we flip the movie script and go to the small screen.

SO FRICKIN many one can choose from..

good luck.  No real rules on this. Can be a full song..  or just a snipet opening theme.

I probably have 10 I could post.. but won't.. in case some of my favs are favs of others.

So I"ll start with 3...

The Sopranos

Barney Miller

and my guilty pleasure...

Keeping Up Appearances (one of the funniest damn shows ever haha)

So no theme this time?

TV show theme music... like the last we did.. just not movies haha...

unless it is a real clunker of an idea...

which I hope it is not. It shouldn't be at least. There was some great music out there used as themes.

However if so... I've got another poll idea in the holster...

There are a ton of these....At first I was thinking of gems some might not remember, like "77 Sunset Strip," with its fingersnaps years ahead of "The Addams Family," (also another huge fave), or "The Mod Squad," for it's very 60's motif.  However, I decided on a different theme.  Animals.  These were all favourite tv shows of mine as a little girl.

First choice is this melancholy theme from "Lassie."

Alternates for fun are short and sweet but evocative theme from "My Friend, Flicka"

and from the delightfully 1960's "Daktari"

Great idea, Micky!  And much shorter to listen to, most likely, so having a lot may not be as time-consuming.  This goes from classics everyone may know that are phenomenal for so many reasons to forgotten (or perhaps should be forgotten) gems.  Looking forward to hearing what everyone else brings to the living room.

Indeed. Though I haven't watched TV for quite a few years, I did watch a lot of it when I was younger. Believe it or not, I learned to read through a TV programme for adults that was shown on the Italian TV in the 1960. I have selected a few theme songs from TV shows I used to like back in the day. This one, I believe, is relatively well-known:

Don McLean's "Vincent" became famous in Italy as the opening theme of Lungo il fiume e sull'acqua, a detective series based on the novel The Other Man by British author Francis Durbridge. Here is the full version of the song:

Irmin Schmidt is well known in the prog world as keyboarder of Can, and I've tried for ages to get him listed here. But currently, as far as I can see, I haven't succeeded yet, meaning that he qualifies for the poll. He actually has done truck loads of TV soundtracks, and the one I'm playing here isn't exactly an application for PA, but I love this melody to pieces. It's the title track of a TV series, a coal miner saga  set in the densely populated and a bit scruffy working class German Ruhr area (I lived there for 1 1/2 years and loved it for the people there), and the music perfectly combines the coal and steel atmosphere with the romanticism that many who call it their home feel for the region.

Hahaha, I've watched Daktari as a child but didn't have any memories of what the music was like. This is much more fun than I'd have thought! If you're not yet sure what you nominate... I'd pick that one.

So many great TV themes to choose from. Mike Post did a bunch of iconic TV themes throughout the decades. Quite a few charted as singles.

One of my favorites: The Rockford Files (first choice)

Hill Street Blues (feat. Larry Carlton)

Magnum PI (also feat. Larry Carlton)

And out of competition, just for fun, a cover of a well-known TV theme done in the style of another well-known song:

Posted By: The Anders
Date Posted: July 14 2020 at 17:45
The theme from Matador (1978-81), composed by Bent Fabricius-Bjerre.

Matador is a TV series in 24 episodes about the life of the fictional Danish provincial town Korsbæk between 1929 and 1947. It is an institution in Denmark and highly regarded for its artistic level. More info can be found on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matador_%28Danish_TV_series%29" rel="nofollow - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matador_(Danish_TV_series)

All episodes are introduced by the main theme which sometimes reappears within the episodes in different variations.

Here is the theme (as the introduction to the first episode which takes place in 1929):

Videos removed for space:  Because these are all short and sweet, and first impressions last, as they say, I may alter my usual approach and just first reply to these as they come up.  Hadn't heard The Sopranos theme (in a time of not a lot of tv watching for me)...but from what I know of the show, seems quite fitting.  Barney Miller, I know, and a great show it was, as well as Keeping Up Appearances!  Love when the caterpillar comes crawling out of the flower.  I will share a future Mr TJeans here, as I also keep a copy of The Complete Book of Etiquette by Amy Vanderbilt in my bathroom as well as this gem, where Mr TJeans meets Lumina, The Lamp Lady (sorry the photo is so large, but at least you will have no trouble reading the title.LOL

Three of my favorite theme of TV series.

1) HAPPY DAYS

2) THE JEFFERSONS THEME SONG

3) MONK THEME SONG (IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE, BY RANDY NEWMANN)

here the complete song:

-------------
Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

My nominated choice, at least unless it is said that it isn't, and I won't now, so to be absolutely clear, this Utopia one is my official nomination (it's listed as Utopia 2 in the video because it's from the second series/ season):

Cristobal Tapia de Veer - "Lucidity Gone" - from Utopia

If you are only listing the show name, then you might want to list it as Utopia 2 in the poll options.

---------------------------------------------------------

Some alternates:

If soundtracks from artists in PA are allowed:

Mogwai - "Fridge Magic" off Les Revenants

Murray Gold - "Heaven Sent - The Shepherd's Boy" Doctor Who

Angelo Badalamenti - "Laura Palmer's Theme" - Twin Peaks

Was also considering this Zbigniew Preisner from the superb Dekalog.

Also considered Inspector Morse theme, Chocky and The Prisoner theme.

Videos removed for space.  Utopia 2….very very eerie!  And strangely compelling.  And unknown to me.  Also unfamiliar with the Mogwai piece. More “classical,” in feel to me than the Utopia 2 one.  Makes me interested in the series, with the photo.  The Doctor Who one, I know I should know.  For some reason I have missed all incarnations of Doctor Who, have a ton of friends who love it, know I would probably like it as well.  Some time I will have to make room for some bingeing.  Another classical-feeling one, which form I quite enjoy.  The Badalamenti is lovely, as I’ve said before, loved the series and the music.

Here's my first:

The Jones Sisters - "Comet" - Theme from "Perpetual Grace Ltd."

The Jones Sisters did all of the music for the TV series and the album that resulted is pretty great.

This is another song from that series, however, since it isn't the theme song, I guess it doesn't qualify, but it's a great song nevertheless if you are interested.

Videos removed for space.  Alt-country feel to The Jones Sisters.  I like this, great energy.  Love the slidy fiddle sounds.  Resonate, like the jangly guitars and such.  Will probably check this band out more.  Thanks!

#2. Iris De Ment - "Let the Mystery Be" - Theme from "The Leftovers"

Exclamation#3. The Brian Jonestown Massacre - "Straight Up and Down" (excerpt) - Theme from "Boardwalk Empire"

EDIT:  This is the one I'm going to post for everyone to vote on.  I think it best captures the real feel of the series.  So, vote for this!

Here's the full version of The Brain Jonestown Massacre "Straight Up and Down" if anyone wants to hear it all.

Videos removed for space (I feel like I need to say that, so I don't seem rude).  Iris De Ment, was very popular around Nashville, of course.  She reminds me of someone else I like from that ouevre, but not recalling who yet.Did not know this song, nor have I watched Boardwalk Empire (which I really liked this twangy and very bright, forward kind of song, with a wash of sound….so fitting for the water), so will consider all three until your final selection.

Thanks for the comments, Nickie.

By the way, none of mine are the "main" (opening themes) themes, and I know Twin Peaks "main theme" was mentioned already.

Utopia music will probably be my choice (dark show) because it's rather unusual for one thing. The soundtrack works well in the series, and I find it interesting outside of it. Les revenants (The Returned) is one of my very favourite shows of the last decade (it has two seasons of eight episodes each). Many loved the first season but not the second, I loved both. It's a supernatural-themed sort of French drama, and I found it very moving, atmospheric, and compelling. As for Doctor Who, I haven't watched it for quite a while, and getting into it does require an investment of time. I grew up with the show. Of New Who, the revival that begun in 2005, Heaven Sent (from which the music I chose) is my favourite episode. That episode is mostly a one man show and is one I found powerful, moving and beautiful. It's the kind of thing that I had been hoping for from Doctor Who for some time (I wouldn't call it kiddie fare). I do love Peter Capaldi's Doctor -- has gravitas.

Speaking of kiddie fare, just remembered another favouritie of mine (wonderful British serial for kids, and adults, based on a John Wyndham novel).

John Hyde - "Chocky's Theme - Chocky

Micky, if you prefer going with the main title theme (opening music), then my choice for Utopia could be this. EDIT: I would rather go with the one that I marked with Nukes (my first video choice), so this from season/series one is NOT my Utopia nomination.

Micky: The Sopranos, Barney Miller, and Keeping Up Appearances I know. I never got that much into KUA, but my parents loved the show. I got a friend into it accidentally by videotaping a show (maybe an episode of Black Adder or Red Dwarf) and accidentally not turning off record. By the way, the Keeping Up Appearances video as an embed is not working for me, but it works when you click to see it at the youtube site.

Snicolette: Seen that lassie show on TV in reruns before, but not in ages. I very much enjoyed the music. I certainly know the name "My Friend, Flicka” and think I have seen it. That music is so evocative of its time and culture to me (and that's a plus for classics), Daktari I don't think I've seen – fun.

Raff:  Lungo il fiume e sull'acqua 's Vincent. Love it. I love Vincent. My wife would often song that song to me and say that I remind her of Vincent. Those were more innocent days,

Lewian: Your video is not working for me either as an embed or on youtube. It shows the picture but it says that the video is not available.

Not sure if it's exactly the same, but this works for me and I love it (very much my style).

Nogbad: the Twin Peaks theme. I had Twin Peaks lined up for this series too, but thinking that Laura Palmer's Theme would likely be my top choice. I love that and adore Twin Peaks, which I only just finished watching completely not that long ago. The series just blew-me-away. Better late than never.

Nothing substantive to say and stopping there for now, at least based on what has been posted so far.

EDIT -- continuing:

Mathman, I know your three choices very well, and The Rockford Files one is my favourite. Also, that Stairway to Gilligan's Island is neat-o.

The Anders: Somehow missed commenting on the Matador one before. That is quite simple, elegant, traditional and evocative.

jamesbaldwin: Know Happy Days and The Jeffersons really well. Like the Monk one.

Logan: (me talking to myself). I am tempted to go with the Chocky one that I didn't mention in my first post in this thread, but probably will go with Utopia even if I suspect most here would not appreciate it, and some would actively dislike it. I do love the Mogwai soundtrack for Les revenants, but we usually exclude artists listed in PA for such things.

rushfan4: Knew both of those even though I never watched much of either show. I hadn't known that Barenaked Ladies did the Big Bang Theory theme song even though I had been into that band (especially in the 90s). Their "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" cover first got me interested in the band.

TCat: From The Jones Sisters the second one resonated more with me. Haven't seen the show. I don't know if the second doesn't qualify. Enjoyed "The Leftovers" and Boardwalk Empire" ones too.
They are very compelling.  I am not necessarily a big fan of country-ish music, but I also don't let that stop me from admiring what is outstanding, to my ears.  You have a good tap onto this kind of thing.  Love getting to know what everyone hears outside of prog, and I also don't mind hearing what is in that sort of groove, either.  The discovery of something that grabs you and moves you, no matter the genre, is what drives me.

I like to think that it's because I'm melancholic AND beautiful.    Or at least my ears are attractive in their own peculiar miserable way. Melancholic music I often find satisfyingly beautiful -- it resonates with me. A lot of cheery music feels superficial because it doesn't touch me.

Hey Mick, guys and ladies  Beer

I'm gonna indulge heavily and travel straight to my childhood in the 80's...

"Verano Azul", ("Blue Summer") - is a beyond beautiful Spanish series from the early 80's that aired here in Latin America and a few other places as well. It narrates the adventures of a gang of friends on the coastal town of Nerja in Andalucía, South Spain, and how they go about growing up with each experience they have. The music I find it beautifully upbringing.. something, I think, difficult to attain, and don't know.. maybe reminiscent of Spanish music, Chabrier's 'España' suite, zarzuela, etc.?

Captain Future - Main Theme (Latin version). Absolutely love the series and the music! I mean not only the main theme;  I find it truely progressive.. if somehow a bit Disco.. (progressive disco? LOL Stern Smile)  The main track in particular is different to the english one, and the singer happens to be Chilean, nicknamed 'Capitán Memo'. He not only did Captain Future's but many of the animated series back then.

For nostalgics my age, or if you want to peek inside the (for me, superb) incidental music into the series, that are mainly instrumental songs (it is not detached from the screenplay though, but I find it great that way!), I found this https://mp3.pm/song/96810198/Ziv_International_-_Captain_Future/" rel="nofollow - site's mp3 with much effort!

Robotech. This one would only be the main theme, that is 'till 1:36 (but if you like it/didn't know it, the battle/bad guys themes are awesome too..  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dduwy5we7dM&t=2m50s" rel="nofollow - 2:50 , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dduwy5we7dM&t=7m38s" rel="nofollow - 7:38 )

And..   maybe something a bit more conventional...  and/or recent.

Band of Brothers

Did a long-awaited rerun recently, this time with my wife..  (I don't know how I managed to convince her) ...what an experience. Crying guaranteed. And the music totally captivated us.

(Note: just in case, please take it for what it is..  a beautiful soundtrack of a tv series that is in turn an ode to soldiers, sacrifice, courage and heroism. I recall some threads around 3 or 4 years ago here on PA about war movies so.. I'd think is not a problem).

I'd like to suggest naming the entries by the show's name, for clarity and easy remembering..  and maybe mentioning the details as a side note, somewhere.. 1st. post or so.

On that point, it would be great also afterwards creating an index with all the links on the first post to the exact posts for each nomination.

I like to think that it's because I'm melancholic AND beautiful.    Or at least my ears are attractive in their own peculiar miserable way. Melancholic music I often find satisfyingly beautiful -- it resonates with me. A lot of cheery music feels superficial because it doesn't touch me.

MachineMessiah: Had a listen, the Verano Azul is quite delightful. The Captain Futuro and Robotech 2014 (I had seen Robotech) remind me of the mid 1970s Japanese Space Battleship Yamato, which leads me to be reminded of my favourite music from that (I am a sucker for such vocals and it has an air of pathos):

EDIT: Forgot to comment on Band of Brothers. That I know and like.

I like that this can be a trip down memory lane both for the poster, and in various cases, for the listener. I expected to feel nostalgic due to this thread, and to discover new and pleasing, poignant, and/or interesting and surprising stuff to me along the way.

I somehow naively expected to surprise a bit with Robotech.. (a difficult task having you and the other guys in the poll). Here it aired every year for some time. The "2014" thing I don't fully grasp it yet.. Wikipedia says it was a crowdfunding project for a pilot episode that remains abandoned. Anyway, the video is just amazing.. it is basically the same that I saw back then but the graphics are totally enhanced and have new awesome scenes..  Shocked

Space Battleship Yamato I'm sure I saw it.. it just I think here didn't aired as regularly as others. But sure I liked it too!

Glad you commented on 'Band of Brothers' too, and glad you like it  (I'll do my listenings soon).

And yes, memory lane, I don't miss opportunity to go there!  LOL   EDIT: ...in part also because 'objectively' (as much as I can) I think past things, music in particular, were awesome.

Three more and I stop it. The 80's here in Chile, before cable television, were like a golden era for 'kids' in terms of cartoons and animated series.

"Sankuokai"

He-Man "Snake Mountain Theme".  This one I love..  it played everytime a panoramic of the Snake Mountain showed before passing to the bad guys machinations (I would love to find a video that showed just that, but this one sounds great! I absolutely love this kind of stark incidental music!). Hmm, I think this one could well creep into nomination…  Evil Smile LOL   (Recommend to play the video and scroll down to watch the image while listening to the music).

Thanks!  I believe they only have the one album which contains all of the songs they did for the series.  Not a bad song on the entire album.  I've been wanting to post one of their songs for quite some time and this was a good excuse to do it.
As I've said in the past, except for a select few artists, I hate country music, mostly because it is all just assembly line, corporate music.  However, I do like the artists that capture the indie vibe and fit under an alternative-style country or indie-folk.  It has become my second favorite genre next to progressive music, and has been for a lot of years now.  There are many bands out there that can fit under that category and there are a lot that are ignored while others are quite popular.  I'm glad you like what I have presented and I'll hopefully post more of the same, but since I like quite a wide variety of styles, these threads have been quite valuable to me with all of the suggestions from the people on this thread.  Clap

The Leftovers was one of the best series in this decade.  There was also a lot of great music from that show that really captured it's feel and this is a perfect example of it.  The one I posted was the theme for the last season, and was interestingly cheery compared to the overall feel of the series, but the lyrics by Iris De Ment were a perfect fit.

Micky - Love the Sopranos theme, in fact, it got me to look into the band more and now I'm a big fan of their's - Alabama 3.  Even though it is not as noticeable on the Soprano's theme, they normally do this country-hip-hop-electronic style that I find quite enjoyable in some cases (but not always).  If you are interested, here is their version of "Peace in the Valley" like you've never heard it before:

I also love the Barney Miller theme for it's cool jazziness and the great bass run.  Unfortunately, I couldn't get your last video to play (not available in my country).

Snicolette - Lassie and Daktari were both childhood favorites of mine.  My Friend Flicka, for some reason, I mostly ignored.  I had to be home every Sunday afternoon to watch Lassie, though I didn't care for the Timmy and Lassie episodes so much.  I had forgotten about Daktari until I accidentally ran into to it flipping through the channels a few weeks ago, and I exclaimed, wow I had forgotten about this one.  My favorite out of your three would have to be My Friend Flika, though, as listening to the old themes now, they seem a bit contrived even if they were childhood favorites.  Shame on me for losing that childhood wonder!

Raffi - I'm also, strangely enough, a big fan of Don McLean and had no idea "Vincent" was used for a TV theme in any country.  But count on Italy to use such a passionate song for a TV theme.  Italy is amazing for utilizing passion in their music and other media and art.  I live the way he expresses himself when he sings, almost like he is improvising the lyrics as he sings, giving even more expression and meaning to his own original songs and even the covers that he does.  Excellent choice!

Nogbad_the_bad - I love the retro sound of the Twin Peaks theme.  I always thought it fit the odd yet atmospheric feel of the series which is what Lynch is well known for.  As far as one of the most fit themes for a series, this would be it.  Funny how I always think of wood paneling when I think of this series.

mathman - Mike Post - the king of the TV theme song.  Out of these three I would have to also go with your favorite, The Rockford Files.  Post had this way of creating a memorable hook and then developing an entire theme song around it, and the TV producers loved it.  But so did the audiences.  BTW, that Gilligan's Island spoof was silly, but I'm surprised they didn't use the closing theme verse during the heavier section.

The Anders - The Matador Theme is one I haven't heard before, but that shouldn't be surprising as most of my knowledge of TV themes come from North America and a few Italian ones.  This one is quite tastefully done in a nice classical style, simple and comforting, which seems to match the tone of the clip we see in your video.  Very nice.

I was a horse nut...Still love them, though I can't ride anymore, we have three beauties where I am living now.  Daktari theme was so fun....different and fit the series, the visuals are so very 60's tv show.  I am also a huge fan of all of the canids (all animals, really, and have had my share of a variety of pets, including some wonderful felines as well), and thought the theme for Lassie is very pretty.  I also loved Fury, another horse tale (pun!), but the theme wasn't much to speak of...and of course, Mr Ed.  Smile  Pretty much watched all animal shows, including Flipper, which has a very 60's theme tune also.  We lived not far from Marineland and as teenagers would ride our bikes out after hours and climb under the fence to pet the killer whales.  I'm glad they have shut down most of these kinds of theme parks now, but it was quite the experience.

jamesbaldwin - Was hoping for some Italian themes here.  But these are definately iconic theme songs, two of my favorites back in the day with The Jeffersons and Happy Days.  I took Monk a bit more serious though, even though the humor there was always spot on yet a little more tongue-in-cheek.  I'm a fan of Randy Newman's music and would have to pick that one for the best of the three.

I'm back with some more suggestions! They are all from non-English TV shows, none of them very recent. Lorenzo is probably too young to remember themSmile.

This one is by a band included on PA, New Trolls. The song - titled "Black Hand" - was released in 1972 only as a single, and appeared as the opening theme of a mini-series called Petrosino, about an Italian-American policeman who fought the Mafia in turn-of-the-20th-century New York:

The next one is almost legendary. Though musically the song is not exactly my cup of tea, the TV based on one of my favourite book series - the cycle of the Tigers of Malaysia (I pirati della Malesia) by Emilio Salgari. If you love adventure fiction, these books (also written at the turn of the 20th century) are highly recommended. The TV series is named after the books' hero, the pirate prince Sandokan - interpreted by Kabir Bedi, a very charismatic Indian actor who also appeared in a James Bond movie:

And then, last but not least, something not from Italy, but from Brazil - the theme song of the first Brazilian telenovela shown on Italian TV, back in the late 1970s. La schiava Isaura (Escrava Isaura) was based on a novel that was for the cause of the abolition of slavery in Brazil what Uncle Tom's Cabin was for the same cause in the US. The song, titled "Retirantes", was written by Brazilian singer Dorival Caymmi together with famous author Jorge Amado. This is the original version, with lyrics in some African language:

Verano Azul, not what I expected!  But seems like it goes well with the description you gave, young people having fun adventures in a coastal town, I can certainly relate to that.  Capitan Futuro, reminds me somewhat of the Speedracer cartoons, although not quite the same music of course.  Looks like it was a fun show for kids.  Robotech, another Speedracer-y look to it, the music goes well with the theme of the show, a bit on the more upbeat side, which I tend to not be as fond of.  Band of Brothers, was this a tv show they made from the film?  The music is beautiful, much more in my enjoyment zone.  Lancelot Link, we had that here in the US also….Totally forgot about this one!  Sankuokai, very disco-y!  did not expect that from the opening picture, looks like it would have been fun to watch.  He-Man, thinking this is a film also?  Either way, very inventive and sounds to go well with the imagery you’ve shown.

Having posted themes from the ubiquitous Mike Post, I now want to post something that may not be as well known, although should be. This show just ended with it's sixth and final season in January and was brilliant. One of my favorite animated shows all time---BoJack Horseman. Cool theme song by Patrick Carney of the Black Keys featuring his uncle Ralph on sax. Posting the full version of the theme song. It usually runs about a minute at the beginning of the show.

I wasn't going for something emotional, it's Micky's poll after all Big smile I'd pick this one in that case (and it's on PA):

Video blah blah blah

David Sylvian….Yep, you said it, emotional.  He’s got such a great voice.  😊

Logan - My favorite out of all of your great selections was the Utopia 2 theme.  I love the tense sound of the music and the modern electronic feel that hints at avant-garde style.  I'm not familiar with the series, but this music has got my interest going in checking it out.  Already being a fan of Mogwai, I am already familiar and love the Les Revenants soundtrack, excellent choice also.  I'm not that familiar with the Doctor Who series, though I know a lot of people who are really into it, the music was great featuring a slow build that I really like.  Again, I love the Twin Peaks soundtrack, this selection is a bit more laidback than the previous posting, but still effective.  Dekalog is another series I'm not familiar with, but the music is very poignant and lovely, almost reminiscent of "Pie Jesu" from Andrew Lloyd Weber's Requiem, and that's a great thing.  The one that didn't quite resonate (yes I caught that earlier pun) so much was The Prisoner theme.  But the Utopia 2 theme will be a contender for me if you choose it.

First impressions..   (I think I'll be editing this post.. if there are too many entries I'll maybe split it in two or three).

Micky - never been a fan of the 'Sopranos'. Didn't know the music nor the intro. I liked it!  'Barney Miller' great vibe..  Good bass and sax, upbeat. 'Keeping up appearances'..  symphonic/orchestral stuff.. I'm much into that kind, extra points.

Snicolette - Like 'em all. 60's and 70's things and music I love. Daktari wins extra points for the lion-mounting bit  LOL  that took me by surprise... cool!  Cool  It brought me memories.. I was too young, but I remember having seen 'Tarzan' and 'Cheetah', in black and white, with that impressive scream of his!

Raff - beautiful voice.. the first one beautiful and relaxing black & white vid. Great music. In the second is more prominent the voice. It reminds me of 'Nights in White satin', 'Simon and Garfunkel'.. that kind of stuff, that I know not 'firsthand'.

Lewian - as always something interesting, obscure (for me!) and good looking cover art! It has reminiscences of a western, but with a mystery halo thrown in..  adding the miner plot, kind of an unusual mix. Will require more listens.

Nogbad - 'Twin Peaks', not sure if I ever saw it..  I believe yes, but not sure if the same version that you guys. It reminded me of an extraordinary game, 'Thimbleweed Park' about solving a mystery in an ultra strange and bizarre town.. and the (superb) music drew from TP..  that low (guitar?) string..  superb! LOL

mathman - 'Rockford files' sort of cowboy stuff ...with great synthesizers! points. Like the guitar sound.. more points ...and the precussion. 'Hill Street Blues' more interesting synthesizers.. I like that! nice guitar too. 'Magnum PI' like that kind of stuff 70's - 80's  Thumbs Up

The Anders - 'Matador' liked very much your presentation of the theme. I wonder why it has a Spanish name... I like very much those series ambiented in past times. Very sentimental, I like that. Good to know it! would like to watch it. When I read your presentation about this Danish provincial man I remembered that Netflix movie about an engineer, 'A Fortunate Man'..  I liked it (not many Netflix movies can say that), very well set in the time and liked the casting too (something I'm very picky about).

jamesbaldwin - 'Happy Days' seems like a fun and upbringing series; I like that. 'The Jeffersons', yeah the piano perhaps a little too simple.. her voice doesn't suit me though. 'Monk theme song', yeah nice, has a swing to it, like it.

Logan - 'Utopia 2', different, interesting, will require more listens upfront  Thumbs Up.  'Les Reventants'  another that seems interesting and inviting more listens, I like those reverberating chimes or bells. 'Doctor Who' have to revist also, but liked better the two previous ones, specially 'Reventants' 'till now. I'm illiterate on the 'Twin Peaks' series. The music though as I noted with Nogbad's makes me remember this video game, that draws from it and the music rocks.. that tragic touch of mystery, sentimentalism, etc...  'Dekalog' beautiful piano.. good one! 'The Prisoner', 60's stuff.. trumpets.. points  Beer

rushfan4: 'Big Bang Theory' like the series; the intro is funny, but not particularly fond of it. 'Home improvement' sort of 90's.. not my favorite decade, but nice flute.

TCat: 'Perpetual Grace', dynamic song.. slightly country.. maybe a bit too popish. 'Resonate' perhaps a bit too singing-intensive at first; like the violin afterwards though, the guitar also. 'The Leftovers'.. fair voice, beautiful country singing. 'Boardwalk Empire' love that fiery guitar..! points.

I'll stop there for now.  (was not aware it were only 2 to go).

Meltdowner: dynamic, jazzy, orchestrated.. made me remember the Flintstones'one I posted later. I like it. Like that raw acoustic bass and the percussion.. with the added bronzes it resembles the Spider man intro that I loved. (I keep on the past :D ). Like it very much.

Gentle and Giant: Wow.. very sad. Hard to listen for me because of that, though good music. Haven't seen the series nor have heard of it.. I'm gonna check it out.

Matador Almost missed this, my apologies.  Love this, the melody reminds me of my grandmother or great aunt sitting at the piano and playing.  So pretty with the strings and flute.

Yeah, I might have to go with Daktari, despite it's not being beautiful, it's got novelty appeal, as you noted.  We watched all of the Tarzan tv shows and movies, too....and of course, ended up reading Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars novels like mad during the 70's.  Glad you enjoyed all of them.  Smile

Just curious what you had expected with 'Verano Azul'. Tongue

Band of Brothers is a TV series Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg made (I think) with all the material they got and maybe did not use for the film 'Saving Private Ryan'..  is a TV series, each episode at the beginning has interviews with the veterans from the same and legendary 'Easy Company' whose track the series depicts.

Sankuokai, yeah! it was funny to watch.. it got the space thing (love that sort of stop-motion animation) and the martial arts.. plus very dark bad guys..  we went nuts with that! I wonder, the cartoons we as a generation got to see were pretty special.. some were very sci-fi ish and I think with good music and all..  great art.

He-Man was a TV show..  (also we went nuts with that..  with my brother we had a bunch of the action figures). I love those well crafted shows that had also great and interesting music..  main theme and above all the incidental pieces! I was impressed finding that great sounding video.

I was thinking the music would be more moody, more what I think of as Spanish music.  But it fits the joy of youth.  On the other, definitely saw the first stop motion animation with Speedracer (which I mentioned more than once).  I was not watching a lot of cartoonage by then, when it came out.  But it came back in spades when my son was young and Pokemon was de rigueur, so I appreciate how ahead of it's time it was, in retrospect.

Beginning where I left off ....

Rushfan – Big Band Theory – I never really watched this series that much, but I wasn’t aware that Bare Naked Ladies sung the theme.  It’s funny, as some of there music is, and I have many favorites from them, but others I don’t like as much.  This was a good one.  Mike Post-Home Improvement – Watched this one a bit more back in the day, but the music never really seemed to stand out which was strange for a Mike Post composition.

Logan – It seems you always have interesting and intriguing music that I find enjoyable.  No exception with Chocky’s Theme which has an intriguing atmospheric and spacious feel to it.  The Utopia Theme I find as excellent as the original Utopia track you posted, I really like that music a lot and this one even manages to throw in a reggae vibe as well.  Blackadder is hilarious and satirical and so is Toast of London, which I found humorous (love the black humor as it effectively speaks of society).

Lewian – I was finally able to hear this with Logan’s repost.  Rote Erde has a nice European vibe to it and I’m always a sucker for that sound.  I really like how it turns quite uneasy in the last section of the track.

Machinemessiah – Wow a lot of posts here.  All three of the first songs were nice, bright and cheerful especially with the Robotech theme which effectively plays off the pomp of Star Wars and other space oriented theme music.  However, Band of Brothers is a sentimental favorite of mine, I absolutely love that series and the music for it is perfect, heroic, yet not over indulgent.  Lancelot Link for me was a forgotten gem and thanks for the reminder.  “Sankuokai” is a lot of fun, it’s not familiar to me, but it’s still cool.  The He-man theme is definitely sparse and scary.

Meltdowner – “Cowboy Bebop” – For me, this track is excellent and a definite favorite.  I love the retro spy sound with the cool jazz hooks.  The David Sylvian track is also lovely and emotional.  Nice contrast between the two tracks.

Gentle & Giant – I consider the music from The Leftovers, especially the theme that comes from this suite, to be some of the most lovely and heartwrenching music for TV in modern history.  Definitely the best of the decade, as you say.  Amazing series and amazing music.

Cristi – Riz Ortolani “La Pavra”.  Very nice music, melancholic, yet suspenseful.

Raff – New Trolls “Black Hand”  I am quite familiar with the band’s musical output from the time this was put out, but I don’t know this one.  I always loved their over-the-top harmonies that weren’t quite as kooky as Queen’s but very similar to Sweet’s (did you ever hear their cover of “Let It Be Me” or their song “Bella Come Mai”?).  I also love the Italian campiness of “Sandokan” and the use of African rhythms in “la Schiva Isaura”

Mathman – I had no idea that Patrick Carney did the Bojack Horseman theme.  Nice expansive vibe for a less-than-legendary character.  Also, there is some great sax work in there.  I would never guess that there is a Black Keys relationship there.

Scooby Doo really fun, we even enjoyed watching that one as teenagers.  Their theme song was kind of like a lot of cartoon theme songs of the day, kind of Monkees-ish.  Night of the Witch Switch was cute, kind of a trying to be metal-ish song.

As I was re-listening to the Scooby theme, the Monkees is exactly who came to mind for me.  I think that maybe it was their episode music soundtracks that I remember being quite psychedelic.  It has been a long time since I've watched them.

Here's the last thing that Mark Hollis (Talk Talk) ever published. A very short thing for a TV series, but the magic is there. RIP! (I'm going to nominate Irmin Schmidt anyway, but I like to have this here.)

Unfortunately this week I don't have the time to listen and write something before the actual voting starts.

Boss, definitely got the sinister thing going on there, almost an effect as though you’re missing pieces of conversation, like someone is perhaps trying to eavesdrop on whatever the boss is saying.  There should be no stress for people to listen, I think once voting is open, the poll is open and commenting is fine before or after.

Thank you for your comments

I would have thought you would be at home with that bit from He-Man  LOL  (because of the 'metal team' part in your profile; though, I know, not necessarily). I like some dark stuff but definitely not all, and it has to be sort of sci-fi -ish also for me to like it. Funnily, I've never been into metal though, not even prog metal.. (though I like a few things). In the case of He-Man there were many other themes during the chapters also and obviously not all were dark (and the one I posted, "Snake Mountain", was only an extract what played while one watched the show and the camera focused on that perspective of the Snake M.). But I love it..  Anyway, I don't believe I'll nominate it, in part for being sparse, incidental, etc., and I think, considering your comment and that of Snicolette, maybe Band of Brothers would be a better option.

Like 'em both.  Tongue

Lost in Space..  never really a fan (maybe too young?), but I remember having seen it set on the TV at my grandparents' living room, (that was where we were on weekends). And..  good music!  ..and intro.

It made me remember this one:

St. Elsewhere, love the 80's sound!  Clap  (and the haircuts, soberness, etc.)  don't think that I ever saw it; though I remember here it aired on weekends, in the afternoon, a series about hospitals that was similar, though don't think it is the same. I was too young to be interested in that kind at the time (no cartoons LOL ..and hospitals!).  It brought me memories..  on weekends we were at my grandparents', they had a house on a large terrain (still there) near the Mountains (Santiago is also at the mountains's feet), so after lunch, when the TV was dull (for kids) you could always go play outside with the cousins  Big smile.

You somehow made me remember this one, that I used to absolutely love. Heart

This time, a beautiful ending..  'Tour of Duty':

(Don't remember if it was always so, but the video starts with the sound of a shot, (this was the better sounding I found), so if you wanna skip it, go https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2B0xpqosps&t=4s" rel="nofollow - here instead).

Someone once lent me an electro-acoustic guitar, with an amp that had a chorus effect; one of the first things I tried to play was this. Not exactly, but it sounded beautifully!

Land of the Giants…I remember watching (and enjoying) the show, did not remember the theme music, however.  More very 60’s theme music.  Tour of Duty, this, I very much enjoyed.  Had never heard it, very contemplative.  Airwolf, very 80’s sound to it.  Bewitched…of course I remember this one, was also a fave of mine as a child.  I still refer to Mrs. Kravitz and Aunt Clara.  😊  Also of course, the Flintstones.  We watched it, but it was not a top show for me, I was more of a Jetsons fan (of the same cartoon creators).  The theme music is very iconic, however (as was The Jetsons) and very 60’s.

So I guess it's about time to name which posting we are going to put up for the vote.  I really feel strongly about the "Boardwalk Empire" theme, one that I always thought captured the essence of the series yet is also an intriguing track, so after much deliberation, that is the one I'll put up for voting.  I'll put up one of those fancy little exclamation marks next to the original posting.
