^ that is a bit of a sore spot for some... like my firebrandish wife hahaha.. but I can only speak for myself and I will though I don't think Christian got me wrong here I'll be clear in my observation was not a criticism.  I loved the theme he did here...  outside the German broad and the Cat..this was ALL new to me.. and that is why I first came here.. and stayed here.. it is all about finding stuff you haven't heard that hits a nerve.

I mean... isn't that why we are digging these polls..

and also why I still think a prog version of the polls we are doing here would go over well... I meant to try doing it but got caught up in trying to make right the utter DC-10 crash that was my attempt to do one of these a couple of weeks ago.

It doesn't take long here.. it just takes reading some of the comments on this forum to realize that most really don't know prog... they know only what they like and have been exposed to. ie very VERY UK centered .. and might really get into the spirit of digging some new stuff as we have with this non PA's polls.

makes me also lament the days when we had audio samples on the site... made it very easy to check out musiic outside the well known and bigger names.

I wouldn't mind a prog version either, but I think it would be difficult to decide what is elegible and what is not. Clearly, such a poll would make little sense to me if we end up with songs by Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson and so on, but where do we draw the line? There will be a lot of discusssions about why this and not that...

We may be limited to put songs that have 10.000 Youtube views or less, for instance.

I wrote before, one possibility is max. 10 ratings on PA, or be it 20... another possibility is just to say everybody try to propose something unknown to as many as possible of the others, and everybody is only allowed to vote for things they hadn't known before, unless they know n-2 or more.

actually..  I think it can be quite simple in concept and execution.

What have we been doing here.. did we need all kinds of rules.. no we didn't. Most of us caught the implied jist Lorenzo had with his first poll.. we picked up on it and didn't flood his polll or subsequent ones with stuff that probably everyone know.  We generally understood that we were here to try to find stuff we may not have heard.. AND we would offer suggestions that we thought perhaps that others may not have heard.

so we simply do that regarding stuff on here.

What it would need to work.. is not a bunch of rules or stipulations.. it is YOU all who have been participating to start the ball rolling with the suggestions in the spirit we have generally had here.

so guys (and dear ladies) start thinking them up..  I will make clear in the opening post what we are doing.  Any suggestions that are deemed 'too mainsream'  will.. emmm..  be ignored.  I have no idea how many outside our little group here will participate... I meant what I implied earlier. This forum is a shadow of what it once was for once we had a lot of people here who really knew prog... knew the stuff outside the usual suspects.. many of those left over the years and been replaced with not fans of the music.. but fanboys of particular groups.

so start thinking up some prog songs you know implicitely without haveing to have restrictions imposed upon you.. I'll start the poll once I've heard back from you all that you are on board with this.

Sure we've always been sensible here, and no strict rules are needed, as is obvious. But a single rule wouldn't harm, if you ask me, Micky. Smile

What you suggest is also OK.

single rules are in themselves the themes we have gone into.. what drew us in originally were the free form nature of the polls.

those rules/themes can come later.. like the obvious one..  modern? classic? Specific genres?  For now.. f**k it..free form.. free dope, booze and free love.. and free music...

whatever we want man.

What is needed though to start are not rules ..but you all to set the tone via the suggestions you make.  Someone is going to look mighty silly suggesting a goddmaned Genesis song in the midst of what we might be suggesting. For that perhaps it be best I take the first poll or two..  I do have a talent for dealing politely with those who miss the boat...  'ummm..  hey Bobblehead.. try again... read my f**king post and try suggesting something you think others might like that they may not know'

I've learned a good life lesson first in the service.. then later running crews of workers on jobsites.  It is easier to get a point across with a 2x4 ..blunt trauma ...  rather than trying to us reason'. It is how I got things done here as well as a collab leading teams. LOL It works...

I am game for whatever the rules or lack of may be.  Smile

I enjoy the discovery and the discussion, both.

It's also given me some more insight into some of you that I see within the forums....kind of like looking at someone's music and/or book collection when you visit their home (or could before the digital age).  So, yes, please.

Haha, my own outlook and experience as on- and offline game master and boardgame development test player is certainly different... rules shouldn't be complicated and there shouldn't be many if it can be avoided... but precision surely helps because there will always be the odd person who interprets whatever is imprecise in a surprising... if not dodgy and spirit defying way.

oh really...  I have experience in that myself and helped design one of the most complex games out there in a game notorious in the boardgaming community as overly complicated. Suppose you know it.. the with a fanatical base of fans and the one whose rules are a in a large 3 ring binder that read no better than the f**king electrical codebook LOL

I'm game for whatever rules. I do have an idea for a future theme that could be fun or an outright disaster.

This has been enjoyable for me. I'm basically a rock music fan as is reflected in most of my choices. I do enjoy and appreciate other music but not always looking for it. So, getting some suggestions outside of that has been great. I've really enjoyed the Africa-based music (Rokia Traore here and Seckou Keita from the 3rd one).

I have an Amazon Music Unlimited streaming subscription and added the Beautiful Africa and a few of her other albums to my cloud, as well as the limited amount of Seckou Keita. I've surprisingly been able to find a good number of the suggested songs on Amazon, and that has lead to a rabbit hole of other music. The Amazon music player has a feature of "You might like" based on what I recently played. I currently have recommendations for Celtic and Nordic folk music and some East European rock music as a result of this poll.

It looks like we've settled  in on having 'regulars' but I hope other people drop. Even just listen. I didn't contribute to the first poll and enjoyed it. I think there is that time commitment to want to listen to something different for an hour or so that probably holds people back. (Just had a thought - a prog poll in which everyone recommends a 15+ minute epic could be trouble.)

Anyway, looking forward to the next couple of themes. I have some ideas for instrumentals, and will probably pick one based on what others suggest first as to provide variety. Latin America based music, on the other hand, I'll need to dig deep into my music collection. Outside of prog, Santana, and a Los Lobos compilation, not sure what else I have.

I'm on board for whatever you rules or themes are done.  I agree that the pleasure of this poll is sharing and discovering new music.  So, have at it guys, do what you must, I'm along for the ride.

I did test gaming and rules discussion for games that are meant to sell... meaning low to medium complexity. I have played my fair deal of freak games, although I've got to say, if it can't be done in 4h including explanation, or max 5, it isn't for me. Online and postal gaming is a different issue, but I've never done anything of the kind people sink all their free time into and then some.

I can wait it out. I am looking forward to instrumentals and Latin American music. I might want to run my idea by someone to see if it is good or bad.

I'll see what I do with every theme: if I find something that fits, I'll bring it in; if not, I might still listen and vote, or just pass...

np!!!  You do have me curious... so yeah.. you can run it by me in a PM and I'll give you an honest feedback. The thumbs up or down. Hah..  I do have a head for bread and circus's man.. it is probably what allowed me to keep my head attached with the classic admin team when I wasn't exactly a model citizen here.. but was never a dull one either. i think they got as much of a kick out of it as i did when we went Roman on the DT fans here and fed them to the hungry masses

I got the Big Mick Seal of Approval(TM), so I am calling dibs after Lorenzo's Latin American music poll.

Yes, Los Lobos play latin rock, I love Kiko and the Lavender Moon, but, with "music with Latin American Influences" I mean every song that draws on the music of Central America and South America, so we are talkin about songs with rhythms or arrangements related to samba, bossanova, tango, caribbean folk, latin jazz, latin American folk, raggae, rock steady, ska, mambo etc. So there is a lot of freedom of choice. For example, with reggae you can post both a Bob Marley song and some Police song.

I think it would be a nice idea, later on, to open an interactive poll also in the "prog polls" section, dedicated to prog songs included in albums not present in the Top 100 of PA.

Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.
