Subject: Interactive poll#5 - This sounds Greek to me!
Date Posted: June 10 2020 at 08:01
OK, here we are for the fifth issue of Lorenzo's wonderful interactive poll idea.
This time it comes with a theme, and this is "This sounds Greek to me". Meaning that the rule is, propose something that
1) isn't listed on PA,
2) has some singing,
3) is not in English, and
4) is not in your native language.
That shouldn't be too difficult because there are lots and lots and lots of languages... however even my own collection is so strongly dominated by English and then German that I had to look around a bit. I hope it'll be fun and you have something good to show. (Obviously English native speakers have a bit of an advantage here because for them only one language is excluded, but as there are so many languages, this shouldn't make much of a difference, or does it?)
PS: mathman made the valuable point that the following should also be included in the opening posting: General rules: Choose a song you enjoy and want to share with others. Don't vote until
nominations are deemed final by OP and you have listened to all songs
posted, and then vote for your favorite 3 songs, but not your own.
Here's my entry (I didn't go for something Italian, sorry Lorenzo, it doesn't sound Greek enough to me; actually this song is called Tuit Tuit, not Tui Tuit as indicated in the video):
PS: Fantasy languages are allowed (but Magma isn't ).

Okay, here comes one of my favourites. The singer is the vocal prodigy Dimash, from Kazakhstan.
The composer is Igor Krutoy from Russia and the song is in Italian.
Also, it should be considered that this part is from a very long concert, longer than 2 hours (2 hours and 40 minutes or something, as far as I remember). Dimash sings from pop to ethnic, jazz to classical throughout.

Not too difficult indeed, and I'm not a native Gáidhlig speaker. Neither do I want to waste too much of your time now.
This one meets all requirements: The Bothy Band - Fionnghuala

@Lewian: The composer's surname is "Krutoy". Not a big deal, but better if corrected.
I wrote the full name -Dimash Kudaibergen & Igor Krutoy - Olimpico (Ogni Pietra)- for you to copy-paste easily, but something went wrong while posting. When I reposted, I forgot to include that part.

This brings back amazing memories for me. During my time in Italy, I had a friend from Palermo recommend Pino Daniele to me as his excellent album "Vai mò" had just been released. Daniele is an amazing singer with impeccable timing, a knack for crossing all genres, and a perfect voice. I had a hard time choosing which song to post off of this album as every song is great, but I went with the opening track "Che te ne fotte" as it is quite funky and very likeable instantly. Yes, I understand Italian, but he sings with a deep Neapolitan dialect which I don't understand, yet this only proves that excellent music transcends all language barriers. Enjoy!

Wagakki Band - Senbonzakura
I'm Japanese-American. I studied some in college, but outside of some words and phrases, my comprehension is limited. Probably good for this song as I read a translation and it's a bit dark. The title means "A Thousand Cherry Trees" and it's a cover of a song that was originally sung by Vocaloid (voice synthesizer software). The band mixes traditional Japanese instruments with rock instrumentation. The traditional instruments are shakuhachi (bamboo flute), koto, shamisen, and Japanese percussion.

It's a great song! It's not on PA and it's neither in English nor Polish. Hopefully it counts. BTW, I'm not a huge Dimash fan. I think the type of music he does is a huge waste of talent. I wish he would do some Iron Maiden type stuff.

I am admittedly not really a fan of music with non-English lyrics mainly due to my own linguistic limitations. This is a "me" problem not a "them" problem. I've found a few prog bands over the years like Nemo and Cast that I do like quite a bit and from time to time I do listen to the some of the better know Italian prog bands although none of them are really the classics for me like the English singing bands. Anyhow, I suppose I will have a bit of fun with y'all and suggest this classic pop hit from my youth that I would sometime hear the English version and sometime the German version. I don't expect too many votes for it here on this site, but my library of non-prog, non-English music is extremely limited and this is what came to mind for me.

I was shocked to find out what a large percentage of my own (non prog) collection is either instrumental or English or German. And I'm not even much interested in lyrics normally (which of course makes it easier to appreciate "Greek" stuff), and I see myself as quite internationally oriented, living in Italy and having lived in the UK and Switzerland apart from my native Germany. Anyway, you're still welcome to contribute if you come up with an idea, and of course to vote!

well so much for my dreams of wining the thread
did a first round of listenings to what we have so far..
A nice change of pace. Musically for the most parts.. not the most inspiring.. my own choice included but wasn't that the point of the theme. It is the singing.. the voice.. even the musicality of the languages and that is how will approach my votes
suspect I am going to need multiple listens to find votes 2 and 3 Much as last poll.. the winner had already been found and like last time knew it before I heard all of them.

Actually, I looked up the meaning to the title a few years back, because I kind of suspected that, but the rest of it is still a mystery to me for the most part. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2015 from a heart attack, but he put out quite a large discography in his time.

I messaged James Baldwin yesterday to tell him I'd found a song for his fifth interactive poll and he didn't have a problem with it. "I Remember" isn't my favourite Demis Roussos song, but it's the only song he sings in his native Greek language. If I was to choose a favourite Demis Roussos song overall, that would be "Forever and Ever" sung in English, although that wouldn't be eligible for this thread. I guess I could choose the Spanish version of "Forever and Ever" instead though. Then again, I could choose a song by Aphrodite's Child to keep it proggy.

Okay, I've just read Lewian's intro. I'm guessing Lorenzo is James Baldwin's real name. This is what it says in the introduction:-
1) isn't listed on PA,
2) has some singing,
3) is not in English, and
4) is not in your native language.
So how come my choice of song by Demis Roussos is unacceptable to you when Lorenzo (James Baldwin) said yesterday in a private message to me that it was a "wonderful" choice?

You can either go with my original choice of Demis Roussos song sung in Greek, or "Forever and Ever" sung in Spanish. I don't mind which. I'm beginning to wish I never took part in this poll now though with the Land of Confusion I'm currently in. You may not like the Demis Roussos song I've chosen, but that happens to be my choice, so take it or leave it. I don't understand why the song is unacceptable for this poll though, when it conforms with Lewian's four points listed above?

As said, no one thought it was unacceptable. And the more participants,, the better.
But, in looking at the original post, as a reminder for future polls, include the full rules for newcomers. That is, include: choose a song you enjoy and want to share with others. Don't vote until nominations are deemed final by OP and you have listened to all songs posted, and you can vote for your favorite 3 songs, but not your own.

Your first posting suggested that you don't really know what this is about, but now you do. So tell me in a straight sentence what your entry is (no two alternatives please, just tell me what your *one* entry is), and I'll include it.
PS: OK, I got it, Demis Roussos is your choice.
PPS: Can you please write the title of the song down in proper Latin letters? I tried to copy the Greek title in the poll, but the system didn't like that.

Don't vote until nominations are deemed final by OP and you have listened to all songs posted, and you can vote for your favorite 3 songs, but not your own.
I noticed that there is already one vote up.
Good point, I added this to the original post. (PS: In fact I'm a mathman like you, so I like precise definitions. )

@Psychedelic Paul: OK, so I'm assuming now that you will not take part. If you change your mind once more, please give me a title in Latin letters that I can copy and paste in the poll.

If Paul decides to participate, the English translated title of that Demis Roussos is, as he said, "I Remember", but if you also want the Greek word in the Latin alphabet, google translate shows it as "Thymamai", so you might put it as Demis Roussos - Thymamai (I Remember).
EDIT: By the way, some might have noticed, and probably no one cared, that I changed my youtube video embed (exact same music) thinking that some seeing Serge Gainsbourg walking and smoking around Paris might find the images distracting -- other than concert videos, mostly, and various music videos actually, I play music in the background, including off youtube, as I do other things, like most I expect. If this is distracting at all, for some it might be in a preferable way.
Not including my own choice, of course, I already have a top three, or between four, of those already listed that I'm reasonably confident with. I hope we do get some more participants. I regret missing a few of these interactive polls (been off-site), as I had a number of potential choices lined up to go. Just three more to go, or two more if Paul opts to play and in-time, for a full poll option house. Good going even if no one else participates in the nominations process. Of course the nominations bit is the easy part for participants, it's the listening to/ checking out everyone else's choices and choosing three from those that can take some time and patience, which I would think a significant reason why more of the forum membership don't participate (and I guess it can be disheartening or intimidating thinking no one, or hardly anyone might like your choice). Not sure what percentage of regular forum users have participated in this series so far, but I would expect that it's significantly repeat "customers". I'd like to host one of these down the road with my own special conditions (temporal conditions, say all 60s, and/or all instrumental, or...).

did a first round of listenings to what we have so far..
Don't hurry! There's still a day of potential additions!
if you stay to form.. Saturday morning has been been the window has closed but we haven't yet had all the slots claimed. To be honest I would have thought the free form style would have got more suggestions and participation but seeing is believing with a theme based... more pre-voting pages of .. discussion.. and I think already we have more actual choices than we have in any other poll. You did pick a winner though.. and see you and I are on the same coin.. me just on the other half for what I was thinking for a theme. If Lorenzo has no problem with it I'd like to do the next to complement what you are doing this week.
and obviously I won't vote until I've heard them all.. but it will mighty hard to beat #1 of the options posted so far

I love that existential angst cat. :) I also like to be feline groovy (not quite Simon and Garfunkel).
I liked the historical aspect of that Serge Gainsbourg video, I love Paris, and I like the cool cachet of it all. It evokes another time and place. I tend to enjoy such slices of life. I have changed the video back as I certainly had liked it but had second-guessed myself and I too often do misjudge the expectations and reactions of others.

He’s almost like a feline Serge Gainsbourg, just without the singing, or the alcoholism, or the public scandal. Or maybe he’s not like that at all. Maybe Henri, is, as he so eloquently states in his latest film, his “own cat.”

Here are my notes so far, going to go back and listen to a few again.
Knew Nena and Cat Stevens, knew of and may have heard before, The Bothy Band, Eartha
Kitt & Charo
Rokia
Traore - Tuit TuitNice modern African music with
also tribal touches.Very enjoyable.Contender for Top 3
Dimash
Kudaibergen & Igor Krutoy - Olimpico (Ogni Pietra)Woah, there were some high notes there!Very dramatic, esp listening with no videoListening some more
The
Bothy Band - FionnghualaReally fun,
made me think of GG with the dissonance.Love the call and response stuff
that you hear in so much Celtic (and Breton) music. Listening some more
Pino
Daniele - Che te ne fotteNice mellow jazzy vibe here.
Wagakki
Band - SenbonzakuraLots of young energy there.Love how they used traditional instruments to
create a rock sound (I’ve heard this a lot more with Middle Eastern, so fun to
hear a Japanese twist).Costuming, esp lead singer, just gorgeous and
also liked how they blended that traditional costuming into modern clothing)Don’t like the music as much as the idea and
the look, however.
Héroes
del Silencio - Entre Dos TierrasEnjoyed
the rock, it was perhaps a bit longer than needed for video purposes?Good energetic, straight-ahead rock.
Connie
Dover - Ubi CaritasMy choice,
so no comments now, excluding voting for my own.
P-Model
- The Great BrainKind of
quirky, punky.
Nationalteatern
- Barn av vår tidLike the
sound and the tempo changes.Kind of
reminiscent of some alt rock types, but also proggy with the changes, like the
70’s.Maybe?
Nena -
99 LuftballonsToo familiar with this
one, sorry!
Serge
Gainsbourg - Cargo CulteEnjoyable for
the sadness and hopelessness with the twinges of the guitar and percussion punctuating
it all., and then the heavenly chorus. So
very French!Another contender for Top
3.
Eartha
Kitt - C'est Si BonSo fun!Not sure if I’ve heard this one before, but I have certainly heard other
songs of hers.Strong contendress for Top
3.
Värttinä
- SeelinnikoiLOVE this band,
too.So fun, love the dissonance and the
folkiness.Another possible Top 3.
The Boy
& Despoinis Trixromi: Glykeia Mou AgapiTragic
feeling, whatever she is singing about.Listening some more
Cat
Stevens - O'CaritasToo familiar with
this, also, but it’s quite enjoyable.
FFN -
ChemareaSounded 70’s to me again, interesting combination of sounds and vocals,
experimenting with new ideas of the time?Stand Up era Tull-ish and not just because of
the flute, thinking the production takes me there.
Charo -
La CucarachaGrowing up in California,
definitely know both of these songs that she did and probably even saw her do
this show on TV, back in the day.Lotsa
energy and she can actually play the guitar.I always liked her sense of humour about herself.

Some nice contributions here. Let me be a bit vocal about it this time, but not in my native language.
Rokia Traore - Tuit Tuit: The beautiful side of Africa. Not in my top three here, but not far below.
Dimash Kudaibergen & Igor Krutoy - Olimpico: Vocal prowess in a setting strongly reminiscent of a Eurovision Song Contest, presumably for make benefit glorious nation of Kazakhstan. A powerful voice with a very wide range, but not exactly my cup of tea.
The Bothy Band - Fionnghuala: Sorry, no comment. My own contribution to this thread.
Pino Daniele - Che te ne fotte: Jazzy, nice to hear at the right moment, but it does not give me goosebumps.
Wagakki Band - Senbonzakura: A nice one: I like this blend of powerful rock with shamisen and bamboo flute.
Héroes del Silencio - Entre Dos Tierras: Another rocker; the music is allright, but I did not like the vid.
Connie Dover - Ubi Caritas: A nice resting point with sacral and Celtic elements after the previous songs.
P-Model - The Great Brain: My #3 here. The first 20 seconds were an OMG experience, but it has quite a lot of time signature changes and it made me think of KoenjiHyakkei.
Nationalteatern - Barn av vår tid: Research reveals that this one dates from 1978, but it sounds rather retro, almost an attempt to make early prog.
Nena - 99 Luftballons: Hit the top of the charts here back in 1983. Not easy to forget, but a refreshing listen after all these years.
Serge Gainsbourg - Cargo Culte: My #1 from this list. I love the vibe and the choir.
Eartha Kitt - C'est Si Bon: I know the name of this lady from the days when she jumped the disco bandwagon at an overripe age. A good chansonnière, the more given the fact that she's American.
Värttinä - Seelinnikoi: My #2 here. Very uplifting. They remind me of... No, I don't want to go ahead to one of my future contribution, who also had a song in Finnish.
The Boy & Despoinis Trichromi: Glykeia Mou Agapi: I expected something more hyperglycaemic (sounds Greek, I know), so I am not disappointed. Maybe the title (something like "My Sweet Love" if my Greek does not fail me) invoked this suggestion.
Cat Stevens - O'Caritas: A surprise to hear him sing in Latin (I expected Greek, but why?), but not one of the man's best efforts.
FFN - Chemarea: An increasingly interesting listen as this track evolves.
Charo - La Cucaracha: A well-known classic which lacks the potential to dethrone Haken.
Note: I have already voted in this poll. Apparently this is not a multiple voting poll.

This time the songs were generally quite short, which makes the listening and voting process easier and faster.
On the other hand, I enjoyed most of the songs, so choosing is not easy.
My instant winner is Connie Dover - Ubi Caritas.
Second one is, well... Värttinä - Seelinnikoi is very uplifting, so I choose this. Very tasty vocals.
Third, well... ummm... ahh... so hard. I think Rokia Traore - Tuit Tuit is better musically, especially its instrumental passages in the second half is like prog rock, but I'll vote for Wagakki Band - Senbonzakura, as it is more fun and fits my mood. Another day I might have voted for Tuit Tuit.
As I said, it was really a hard one for me...

The Bothy Band - Fionnghuala
Serge Gainsbourg - Cargo Culte

This one was soooooooooo hard.
1. Varrtina Just loved the exuberance the and dissonance.
OK the others are difficult.
2. Rokia Traore I liked the spareness of this one. Really grew on me as I listened more.
3. Eartha Kitt Just for the fun of it all. She carried both sweet and sexy so perfectly in her vocals and in such a tres 50's way.
Honourable mention to Serge Gainsbourg and Dimash K. Serge because of the starkness and that gorgeous chorus of angels. Dimash for such a freaking large vocal range.
And same on being able to vote for only one.

correctamondo!!! I plan on a round of relistens this evening... for me this round of songs followed the path of many of the others polls. The first listens are with half an ear ..looking for the one that grabs you hard and makes you say .. hell yeah!! Every poll for me has had that one. This one was no different. One immediately caught my ear.. and umm.. eyes..
but to seperate the rest.... which is the real fun..and reward.. I really need to listen closer.
