In term of music, could they be labeled as a progressive rap band?

Honestly I don't know and was just asking, but listening to them recently, I thought there was some progressive element in their music

This kind of reminds me of the kind of question the 16 year olds would ask on reddit. Tongue It's a legitimate question though. Those who only know their "hits" might not understand why someone would ask in the same way someone who only knows the hits of Kansas or Genesis might not understand the question and think it's silly. I'm not overly familiar with the Beatie Boys but I do know they brought in some outside influences to their music and so I think it makes sense. I'll let others give a more formal answer here though.

I know where you're coming from, The Beastie Boys were a very unique band, incorporating all kinds of musical styles to their music with a big emphasis on playing (they even have an all instrumental album). Check Your Head is a masterpiece imo and a great example of their varied influences, going from jazz to funk to punk and a lot more. I don't know about labeling it as progressive but it's definitely diverse and unique, for me they are a lot more interesting than a lot of prog bands.

^I think their instrumental album is just a compilation album featuring instrumental tracks from previous albums though.

If I have to say Yes or No.......I say "Yeaaaaaa!!" Big smile. Early on they took a lot of influence from rock, not that only rock can be progressive (that's dumb!), but they were an influence to bands like Korn, Linkin Park and how they mix rapping/talk vocals and rock music, Disturbed did this a lot also.

They began in late 70's, 3 white dudes from NYC doing massive justice to rap beginnings....At times they were not taken serious but they proved themselves with time.

Progressive rap sure, not sure discussions here are needed but I am sure other general music sites yes.

For the time period in question, I think Public Enemy would be the group that really took rap to all new places and new innovations.

In a broad sense, perhaps.

As the term relates to this website and community - I'd say no.

Diverse? Can't really argue against that. But it doesn't really have any elements I would qualify as progressive.

Sabotage is a song by the Beastie Boys, for those who don’t know their work. My crude attempt at humor. Anyone remember when Rush tried rap on Roll the Bones? Ugh! Give me Intergalactic Planetary any day over that!

Are you asking if they belong to category called progressive rap? If so, depends on how that category is defined. I don't think it exists. If it does, how is it defined.

I guess I would categorize them as alternative hip hop/rap.

If you are asking whether are progressive within rap, by expanding the boundaries of rap by incorporating other forms of music, ideas, and innovations, then perhaps. It depends on how you want to differentiate between being progressive or alternative.
