In term of music, could they be labeled as a progressive rap band?

Honestly I don't know and was just asking, but listening to them recently, I thought there was some progressive element in their music

This kind of reminds me of the kind of question the 16 year olds would ask on reddit. It's a legitimate question though. Those who only know their "hits" might not understand why someone would ask in the same way someone who only knows the hits of Kansas or Genesis might not understand the question and think it's silly. I'm not overly familiar with the Beatie Boys but I do know they brought in some outside influences to their music and so I think it makes sense. I'll let others give a more formal answer here though.

I know where you're coming from, The Beastie Boys were a very unique band, incorporating all kinds of musical styles to their music with a big emphasis on playing (they even have an all instrumental album). Check Your Head is a masterpiece imo and a great example of their varied influences, going from jazz to funk to punk and a lot more. I don't know about labeling it as progressive but it's definitely diverse and unique, for me they are a lot more interesting than a lot of prog bands.

If I have to say Yes or No.......I say "Yeaaaaaa!!" . Early on they took a lot of influence from rock, not that only rock can be progressive (that's dumb!), but they were an influence to bands like Korn, Linkin Park and how they mix rapping/talk vocals and rock music, Disturbed did this a lot also.
They began in late 70's, 3 white dudes from NYC doing massive justice to rap beginnings....At times they were not taken serious but they proved themselves with time.
Progressive rap sure, not sure discussions here are needed but I am sure other general music sites yes.

For the time period in question, I think Public Enemy would be the group that really took rap to all new places and new innovations.

Diverse? Can't really argue against that. But it doesn't really have any elements I would qualify as progressive.

Sabotage is a song by the Beastie Boys, for those who don’t know their work. My crude attempt at humor. Anyone remember when Rush tried rap on Roll the Bones? Ugh! Give me Intergalactic Planetary any day over that!

Are you asking if they belong to category called progressive rap? If so, depends on how that category is defined. I don't think it exists. If it does, how is it defined.
I guess I would categorize them as alternative hip hop/rap.
If you are asking whether are progressive within rap, by expanding the boundaries of rap by incorporating other forms of music, ideas, and innovations, then perhaps. It depends on how you want to differentiate between being progressive or alternative.

This is funny because someone added Beastie Boys to MMA (MetalMusicArchives) and i was like OMG, really?
Turns out they have a couple hardcore punk EPs which qualifies them.
This all goes back to the age old question what is prog and what is progressive in a general sense.
I actually love the Beastie Boys. Have all their albums. Blast the bass and beats.
Never considered them progressive, just very clever and artistic.

And Red Hot Chili Peppers. They blended rock and rap, too, no?
The person who posted this is bringing up a point that probably should not be dismissed so lightly. Is it possible for Prog to incorporate rap?

Imo, RHCP were probably the first band to do so.
Anyway, I say it is possible and it's likely it has been done to some degree or another.

I would tend to agree. Certainly artists have blended Prog and funk. For example, Jazz-rock fusion. I think it could be something along those lines. It is a progressive thing to do, but it’s not Starship Trooper.

Well, if we want to be a bit lazy in our definition of prog and rap we can say that Rush already did it with the title track to roll the bones.

Are the Beastie Boys progressive? - are greenfly good for gardening tips? Why do you conflate what we both might like with something that is clearly incompatible with even the broadest interpretation of the PA genre definitions? Never was a poster so aptly named. Get in the sea.

I think a nerve has been struck. We must drill down further! We have to get to the bottom of this. So where were we? Ah, yes: Rush (Roll the Bones), Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthrax ... who else would you consider to be in a newly minted Prog Rap genre? I’m curious to see where you’re going with this, since we all clearly respect each other’s opinions here. We are just brainstorming at this point.

This expresses my sentiments well. While I do love and appreciate the Beastie Boys for their fresh innovative music--which, is, in my opinion, "progressive"--they don't really belong on PA (even though a couple of their albums make me stop and consider.)

Imagine The Sugar Hill Gang being a forerunner to this potentially new category. And who can forget M’s Pop Muzik, which obviously inspired Rush’s Vital Signs lyrics with all the “-ate” rhymes. What about Blondie, who blended New Wave, Disco, Funk, and Hip Hop? That was quite a progressive thing to do. Are you thinking to put Blondie in there with Anthrax and company, or would she be in a sub genre? I see a lot of interesting possibilities here. The mind wanders. Comedy and Rap ... Weird Al’s White and Nerdy ... progressive “in the extreme” but different from that of Beastie Boys. What about all the rap like sounds in ELP’s Toccata Ginastera? I think it shouldn’t just be written off. I’m no expert on rap, though. Probably there are others here who are who could provide some thoughtful insights over my blatherings. Prog rap. Anyone?

No. No prog rap on this site. Or would that be "rap-rock fusion" like we have jazz-rock fusion (which I don't think should necessarily be a sub-genre of prog rock but that's another discussion).

1986 may have been the first LP. But they had hardcore EP's dating back to 1982. First Def jam EP was 84. No RHCP material pre-dates that.

The consensus is this is a rock site not a rap site, the dimension of discussions like this thread is probably the extent of it.

Love the Beastie Boys ever since I bought Paul’s Boutique..although it’s been a while since I last span anything by them. I remember them fondly from the Intergalactic tour and a wild gig at the Roskilde Festival. Prog rock? Nope. Experimental hip hop? Some times Great act? Oh yes!

The reason Beastie Boys gets thrown into the rock category is because they did indeed have some rock releases.
