What I mean by this is, whats your unconventional favorite album from a given artist that generally may not be regarded to as their best or maybe low-mid tier. For example you may say Drama is your favorite yes album.
So ill start, I know its one of their highest rated, but people rarely say its their favorite from the band: Rajaz by Camel

From Pink Floyd one of my favourites (though not my very favourite) is The Division Bell. From Gentle Giant, my two favourites are the debut and Acquiring the Taste, from Rick Wakeman my very favourite is the Arthur one (not sure how unconventional it is supposed to be, it should be considered among his best, I guess, but many people seem to dismiss it, or even frown upon it), also, among my favourites from him is Out There. From Steven Wilson / Porcupine Tree my favourites are Coma Divine and The Raven that refused to sing (yeah, I know, both of them are rather loved, but I don't think many rate them over the more conventional Porcupine Tree studio albums). And from Nightwish my very favourite is Imaginaerum.

That's a really good question, because it depends on the concept most people have of a certain band - which is not always easy to tell. I might start with Pink Floyd's The Wall. The main reason: it is more of a Roger Waters than a Pink Floyd project, and as such it doesn't really fit into the "classic" conception of Pink Floyd based on more collective and proggy albums like Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here (on the other hand there is also the early pychedelic stuff which is a different story). Nevertheless I think The Wall is a really good album with some of their best songs (f.e. "Comfortably Numb"). From the point of view of more traditional rock music the music is probably more conventional that their previous work, whereas from a Pink Floyd point of view it is unconventional. I would however not regard it as one of their best albums overall. Despite some of the great songs, not all tracks are equally strong ("The Show Must Go On" is a mediocre filler for instance), and it is clearly not one of their most cohesive works.

Kind of a tricky question. By most peoples standards King Crimson or Zappa would be considered unconventional, but here they are mainstream ( Like the Beatles or Stones)
I guess it depends on your definition of unconventional is.

King Crimson-Lizard Alcest-Les Voyages De L'Āme Anathama-Distant Satelites (joint favourite with We're Here Because We're Here) Devin Townsend-Deconstruction (although the new album Empath is giving it a run for its money) I can't think of anything else off the top of my head. I seem to usually prefer the highest rated or one of the higher rated albums from most artists. I will edit my list if I think of anything else...

ELP - Either their first album or Trilogy. Tarkus and Brain Salad Surgery just don't do it for me.
Pink Floyd - Not my favorite, but I think The Final Cut is a fabulous album. Spock's Beard - X

Hawkwind their mid-'80s albums Chronicle of the Black Sword and The Xenon Codex. For most, it seems, they're not "essential" Hawkwind. For me, they most definitely ARE.

Haha well when you put it that way it sounds dumb. Again, it's just which is the absolute favorite, whereas the majority of people would pick Metropolis Pt 2 or Images and Words (love those too). My tastes are usually much more predictable, like my favorite Yes album is CTTE and favorite Rush is Moving Pictures etc.

There are number of albums that others have mentioned that are my favourite or amongst my very favourite albums by the artist/ band.
One that hasn't been mentioned is Caution Radiation Area by Area. At ProgArchives and rateyourmusic it has the lowest average rating of the first four Area albums. Arbeit macht frei is the most popular Area album at both sites (I think that's an excellent album, but CRA remains my favourite). |
