Subject: Whats Your Unconventional Favorite Album

What I mean by this is, whats your unconventional favorite album from a given artist that generally may not be regarded to as their best or maybe low-mid tier. For example you may say Drama is your favorite yes album.

So ill start, I know its one of their highest rated, but people rarely say its their favorite from the band:

Rajaz by Camel

From Pink Floyd one of my favourites (though not my very favourite) is The Division Bell. From Gentle Giant, my two favourites are the debut and Acquiring the Taste, from Rick Wakeman my very favourite is the Arthur one (not sure how unconventional it is supposed to be, it should be considered among his best, I guess, but many people seem to dismiss it, or even frown upon it), also, among my favourites from him is Out There. From Steven Wilson / Porcupine Tree my favourites are Coma Divine and The Raven that refused to sing (yeah, I know, both of them are rather loved, but I don't think many rate them over the more conventional Porcupine Tree studio albums). And from Nightwish my very favourite is Imaginaerum.

ELO - Time
Residents - Mark of the Mole
Magma - Kobaïa (maybe not unconventional enough)
Miles Davis - Big Fun

That's a really good question, because it depends on the concept most people have of a certain band - which is not always easy to tell.

I might start with Pink Floyd's The Wall. The main reason: it is more of a Roger Waters than a Pink Floyd project, and as such it doesn't really fit into the "classic" conception of Pink Floyd based on more collective and proggy albums like Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here (on the other hand there is also the early pychedelic stuff which is a different story). Nevertheless I think The Wall is a really good album with some of their best songs (f.e. "Comfortably Numb"). From the point of view of more traditional rock music the music is probably more conventional that their previous work, whereas from a Pink Floyd point of view it is unconventional.

I would however not regard it as one of their best albums overall. Despite some of the great songs, not all tracks are equally strong ("The Show Must Go On" is a mediocre filler for instance), and it is clearly not one of their most cohesive works.

Kind of a tricky question. By most peoples standards King Crimson or Zappa would be considered unconventional, but here they are mainstream ( Like the Beatles or Stones)
I guess it depends on your definition of unconventional is.

Genesis - and then there were three
ELP-first album
Porcupine Tree- Lightbulb Sun (most say either Deadwing or In Absentia)
Pink Floyd- Atom Heart Mother
The Moody Blues- long distance voyager(not sure it's my very favorite but I like it better than EGBDF and SS)

King Crimson-Lizard
Alcest-Les Voyages De L'Âme
Anathama-Distant Satelites (joint favourite with We're Here Because We're Here)
Devin Townsend-Deconstruction (although the new album Empath is giving it a run for its money)

I can't think of anything else off the top of my head. I seem to usually prefer the highest rated or one of the higher rated albums from most artists. I will edit my list if I think of anything else...

Hawkwind – their mid-'80s albums Chronicle of the Black Sword and The Xenon Codex. For most, it seems, they're not "essential" Hawkwind. For me, they most definitely ARE.

Haha well when you put it that way it sounds dumb. Again, it's just which is the absolute favorite, whereas the majority of people would pick Metropolis Pt 2 or Images and Words (love those too). My tastes are usually much more predictable, like my favorite Yes album is CTTE and favorite Rush is Moving Pictures etc.

There are number of albums that others have mentioned that are my favourite or amongst my very favourite albums by the artist/ band.

One that hasn't been mentioned is Caution Radiation Area by Area. At ProgArchives and rateyourmusic it has the lowest average rating of the first four Area albums. Arbeit macht frei is the most popular Area album at both sites (I think that's an excellent album, but CRA remains my favourite).

Well with ELP you can't pick any of their first six albums as 'unconventional' favourite choices I believe. However Works is another story so TCat is on the money with those. Even many ELP fans didn't like those albums and it was a major reason for the band going downhill in popularity so quickly (that and the massively expensive orchestral tour plus punk was a perfect storm)

For me probably Kansas - Somewhere To Elsewhere is the obvious one.

King Crimson is an 'almost' as Power To Believe is my second favourite but its still a long way behind the mighty Red.

Genesis have made so many great albums but a lot of people write them off after Wind and Wuthering. However And Then There Were Three is one of my favourites by them although it still only gets 3rd spot after Trick and Foxtrot.

Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons . I love the title track (my favourite prog metal track) and the tribute medley stuff hits the spot nicely! According to this site though it was 'fan club/promo' release which surprises me. Can I count it??!

Rush - Test For Echo

I'll try to stick with more "well-known" acts. Some of these might be debatable as "unconventional," but they are generally not ranked as high as other albums in their respective discographies.

David Bowie -- Scary Monsters
Scott Walker -- Bish Bosch
Vangelis -- Albedo 0.39
Triumvirat -- Old Loves Die Hard
The Tangent -- Not as Good as the Book
Talking Heads -- Fear of Music
Spock's Beard -- The Kindness of Strangers
Saga -- Generation 13
Porcupine Tree -- Up the Downstair
Pink Floyd -- Ummagumma
Le Orme -- Elementi
The Moody Blues -- On the Threshold of a Dream
Magenta -- Revolutions
Little Atlas -- Surface Serene
Led Zeppelin -- Presence
IZZ -- Everlasting Instant
Steve Howe -- Turbulence
Hawkwind -- Levitation
Glass Hammer -- Shadowlands
David Gilmour -- About Face
The Flower Kings -- Flower Power
Fish -- Yin
Eloy -- Chronicles I
Electric Light Orchestra -- On the Third Day
Dream Theater -- Systematic Chaos
Citizen Cain -- Raising the Stones
Atoll -- Tertio
Arena -- Pride

I'll actually say it, Drama is my favorite from Yes. Also:

Rush - Signals
Spock's Beard - either of the Ted Leonard records
Led Zeppelin - In Through the Out Door

above, progaardvark listed Saga's Generation 13. I want this to be a favorite, but I just can't. I like the concept, and love the instrumentals, but find the vocals incredibly grating.

The first 4 ELP studio albums are all great (obviously I'm a fan!) . The only 'wildcard' entry in their first 6 albums is Pictures At An Exhibition. It was originally only released in the USA and the band originally were thinking of only putting it out in Europe as a bonus live album to be packaged with Tarkus. It's rating on PA is a bit below those other albums but it certainly stands out from the crowd.

Generally fans of symphonic prog but not ELP specifically prefer the debut or Tarkus.
ELP fans and also those that like a lot of electronics in their prog go for BSS. Trilogy seems to sit somewhere else to my ears.
The way I see it Trilogy is weighted more to lyrics and they damped down the sci-fi approach . Greg Lake admitted that he was never totally onboard with Tarkus ('' You can record that on a solo album'' was his response to Emerson when he first heard it!) so I guess for the sake of keeping the band together , Emerson had to relax a little bit of artistic control and that enabled a more 'integrated' vision to emerge. It's certainly an excellent and well regarded album and definitely one of their best but in terms of live performing it caused some issues ( The title track was dumped from the tour that ensued very quickly and Abaddons Bolero was nearly impossible although they tried doing it with Lake playing an extra set of keyboards!). After Trilogy and importantly the formation of their record company Manticore,  they returned to the more expansive symphonic prog style for BSS that went down so well in the live arena. This was also what the fans really wanted.

I hypothesize these albums appeal to my female ears and perhaps that's why I like them more than most men folk.

Works- ELP - I listen to Works more than any ELP album.  Hallowed be Thy Name is one of my favorite songs ever.
Big Generator- Yes  -   Flawless album to my ears.  Every song is special.  Several of my women friends love this album.
Islands- King Crimson  -  The soaring, melancholy beauty appeals to me.
A Momentary Lapse of Reason- Pink Floyd  -  My #4 favorite  PF album.
A Dramatic Turn of Events- Dream Theater -  Fascinating secret concept album, chronicling a multi-decade breakup between Portnoy and the band.  Raw emotions laid bare, riddle the album.  Cuts to the bone and the last nerve.

Minstrel in the Gallery- Jethro Tull -  recorded in the aftermath of Ian's divorce, the beauty is breathtaking. The string quartet and Barres electric guitar are to die for!  Baker St Muse is my favorite Tull song.

Space Oddity- David Bowie -  Songs like "Cygnet Committee" and "Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed" lay bare the genius of a sexy young Bowie catching fire.   Lyrically genius album.  Wakeman's mellotron and harpsichord shine.
13- Black Sabbath-  Listen to 13 all the time!  The bonus disc is as necessary as the main album.  13 is a masterpiece in my world.

"It is the Business of the Future to be Dangerous"- Hawkwind -    Tied with "Electric Teepee", another early 90's album,  for my #1 Hawkwind album.

Hmmm.  Breakups seem to be a common theme to almost half the above albums.   Minstrel, Momentary Lapse of Reason, and Dramatic Turn of Events mark the post breakups of Ian Anderson's marriage, and band breakups for Gilmore and Dream Theater.  Maybe that's what attracts me so?

If we make it "which not totally conventional albums are among our favourites of a band", we can have a very long thread...

I find Nightcap by Jethro Tull good good good:

It is the (prog) rockier version of Jethro Tull (the one I like most Tongue), full of ideas; and the flute sounds somehow different at times, and I believe there are other instruments as well.

And this one live by ELP:
Welcome back my Friends to the show that never ends (~ ladies and gentlemen):

I believe it sounds great (maybe for a live album) and have (IMO) excellent renditions of Brain salad songs… Jerusalem (superb), Toccata, Karn Evil 9... on the other hand, a fun, crazy, fast-paced Hoedown, Take a Pebble, Piano improvisations (love this), etc.

Ha ha ha LOL you got me!

I changed my avatar now so that it doesn't confuse with the albums on the post...

Well certainly I find Machine Messiah a heavy, progressive and unique song (big fan of Howe and Yes), and I also like White Car very much though short as it is! I listen to Drama often and I'm fond of it… (I bought it in the US while on holydays with my dads… around '95 I think…) but still I find it too much 80's... and not Jon Anderson... In my scale not as good/unconventional as the ones I posted, as an album, but yeah.

In that sense, this is another unconventional I like:

I think I bought it on the same trip… Tongue

Another one I remembered by Jethro; pleasant, mainly acoustic, live and fun:

A Little light music

Sometimes these were presents back then… LOL (this from my Dad) perhaps not the ones one'd choose but… unconventional, and sometimes, good!

I remember having fun learning some passages on guitar of this take of Bourée.

Yes, Fly From Here. Not at the level of Close to the Edge, Relayer, or Yessongs, but in the same league as Fragile, Drama, and The Yes Album. I assume this view is unconventional...

By far my favorite Tull. I thought about mentioning this one, but really, its not unconventional. Its got a 4+ star rating here. What it is, is divisive. The people who hate it, REALLY CensoredING HATE IT.

The one that really stands out is maybe not my favorite, but right up there in the top 3, is Black Sabbath - Never Say Die. Air Dance to me is their most proggy song.

Others:

Pain of Salvation - Road Salt One is my 2nd favorite of their albums right behind Be, which I suppose is unconventional in itself.

Opeth - Watershed is easily my favorite of the death era albums. And I absolutely love Heritage as well.

Metallica - RtL and MoP will always be their best best and most important. But I find St. Anger the only enjoyable one of the remainder of their studio discography.

The Residents - In general, I love the part of their discography that people tend to hate. The synthy storyteller late 80's - early 90's. Particularly God in 3 Persons and Freak Show.

Renaissance's Novella has always been my favorite by them.

It took me quite a long time to get into both VDGG/Hammill and Gentle Giant, and my favorite albums by each artist is not their most highly acclaimed:  H to He, Who Am The Only One and Free Hand, respectively.

My favorite Klaus Schulze album is 2007's Kontinuum.

I've always loved Focus' Mother Focus.

I find Roye Albrighton's six "Nektar" albums of the 21st Century quite satisfying.

John McLaughlin's Belo Horizonte is another secret favorite of mine.

I've always enjoyed Chick Corea's The Mad Hatter and RTF's MusicMagic as much as anything else they've done.

I would rather listen to almost any of the solo albums that Robert Wyatt has done in the last 23 years than Rock Bottom.

King Crimson - Island, classical album disliked by any. Melancholic theme with breathtaking compositions is utterly beautiful.
Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother, not a single bad song on it in my opinion. + the live perfomance of Alan's psychedelic breafast is crazy (eating cereals and cooking steaks).
Genesis - We can't dance, yup I also like the pop era a bit.
Kingston Wall - III, many people think that this is the worst album from them. I strongly disagee, The Real Thing is as epic as neo-prog can get.
VDGG - The Aerosol Grey Machine - Into a game!
Mike Oldfield - Incantations - BIG album with four pieces. Love every single minute of it.

I like certain Yes albums that most seem to not care for (and sometimes even hate)such as Tormato, Big Generator and Union. Union is my least favorite of those but even with that one there's nothing really bad on it imo. People's criticism of it usually seems to be more about the way it was made than the actual music itself.

Oh boy. Yeah ... there are a number of unconventional ones that I listen to on occasion - sometimes out of nostalgia that few would relate to (Barnabas - Approaching Light Speed and its sequel) or to get a good laugh (Primus - Tales from the Punchbowl) or when I want something less edgy, with thoughtful lyrics, and with good production (Rush's Hold Your Fire), or when I want to hear sheer madness (Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates of Dawn).

Yeah, their run was from '80 to '87, concluding with Little Foxes. That album's killer, too. More synth. It's different from the previous albums. Barnabas was anything BUT cookie cutter, and that's why they couldn't get any traction in the scene like, say, Petra.

REZ Band has some phenomenal albums, too. I'm a sucker for a great female vocalist.

I couldn't get into Little Foxes. At that time they'd moved to OK and things just fell apart. Before they were in Illinois and Gary Mann had access to an amazing studio, and everyone seemed to be firing on all cylinders. It is a shame because for the 2 albums I mentioned, they were doing some cutting edge work. I like some Rez, some not so much. Colours is my fave, with Autograph, Colours, and the incredibly raw and catchy American Dream.

I have noticed some albums that others have listed that I also consider my favorites including Yes "Drama" and I also love "The Ladder".  Another unconventional album I love is Rush "Caress of Steel".

One I played yesterday that not many have heard of, and they are not progressive, but I still find that it is a favorite is Glassmoon's "Sympathetic Vibrations".  I also love Steve Miller Band's really early albums (before "Fly Like an Eagle") like "Children of the Future", "Sailor" and "Number 5".  These are not progressive but they are definitely unconventional.

Yeah, Barnabas had technically called it a day. Little Foxes was their "contractual obligation" album. The money was already there, but they had to furnish a record before they could vamoose. It's different, but they certainly weren't coasting. "Destroy After Use" is one of their best songs, IMO.

For REZ, I love Mommy Don't Love Daddy Anymore and DMZ. I'm now delving into their later albums, and there's lots to love.

Cranking "Breathless Wonderment"...Brian makes those guys in Judas Priest sound like hacks! LOL

Not familiar with Kingston Wall, but yeah agree with what you say about the others. Just to personally throw in some others:
Renaissance - Song For All Seasons
Marillion - This Strange Engine
Rick Wakeman - Journey to the Centre of the Earth
Yes - Magnification
Steve Hackett - To Watch the Storms
10cc - Deceptive Bends
Camel - Breathless

Yes, that's unconventional I've always enjoyed Fly From Here. It's a good solid album with some memorable songs. They've recorded weaker albums IMO. That said, it would probably be just outside my top 5 Yes albums.

I enjoy both Fly From Here and Heaven and Earth, but I have to be in the right mood

Posted By: Fischman

Having little in the way of expectations at that point, I found Fly From Here to be a very pleasant surprise and an album I really enjoy under any circumstance.

After that, I was excited to anticipate the release of Heaven & Earth.  However, that one left me completely flat. I can't really articulate why because the two albums, at least on the surface, really seem quite similar.  But for some reason, one reaches me an the other doesn't.

Interestingly, I had the exact same experience with Asia in the same time frame. I absolutely love XXX, and actually think it is far and away their best album.  But then I have about zero interest in Gravitas; it does nothing for me.
