Many of these loungey '60s albums in my lists are original vinyls I inherited from my folks. My brother and I have been enjoying them during cocktail hour and remembering our parents fondly, back in the day, as they played this same music and mixed their own drinks. Mid-century was a great moment for our family, so many great memories.

Yesterday, I had my first "Old Fashioned," which is one hell of a tasty little cocktail.  I'll be back for more.

That’s a great idea, like a little trip back in time .

It is. Music and food are both very powerful emotional connectors and links to people and places we originally experienced them. It is a special and sometimes very intense way to hold on to a piece of people we loved, once we lose them.

@ Steve.

Wow, that sounds really wonderful. I think Nick is really relishing the opportunity to be in charge rather than his previous role, and also enjoying giving the first-era fans the chance to hear the stuff they won't hear at Roger's gigs.  There are many people who consider 67-71 to be "the real deal Floyd," and Nick is now their hero.LOL  What a setlist! It's a shame that Rick is gone because I would wager that he would have been included in this project.

Marty Robbins - Portrait of Marty
Point Blank - Second Season
Point Blank - On a Roll
101 Strings Orchestra - Rhapsody
The Best of the Big Band Singers - (30s/40s swing with vocals, awesome music)

Point Blank was a revelation. I knew them only for their early 80s hit, "Nicole." Remember that one, Steve? All over the radio for a month?  I didn't realize that they were a great Texas/southern boogie band in their previous 70s incarnation. Apparently, like many great 70s bands, they tried to cross over to AOR in the 80s...they scored a hit with Nicole before splitting up. But stuff like their 1977 album is far more memorable. Check it out if you like ZZ top or Skynyrd.

Tangerine Dream - Paradiso. Completed the first listen to the 3 Dante concept albums over 5 CDs but this was a struggle, getting very close to classical opera and in large doses and foreign languages too. Purgatorio immediately strikes me as the best but I’ve bought a Kindle prose translation of Dante’s book with the 19th century engravings to get the story behind the tunes.

^^ I only heard Purgatorio once but I remember it's pretty great

Thanks for the report, Steve. People can have Waters' The Wall shows, I'll take that setlist Big smile Just put Echoes in there and it's perfect. I see I'm on vacation when he will play in London, although I wouldn't venture travelling alone Embarrassed

This week so far:
Tangerine Dream - Le Parc (That reprise of "Great Gig in the Sky"...)
Dhvani - Angustium (Not essential indeed, but better than a lot of stuff I had to evaluate.)
Ash Ra Tempel - Starring Rosi (It's nice to hear Göttsching outside the usual cosmic territories.)
Ryuichi Sakamoto - 1000 Knives (The live version of the title track with YMO so much better.)
Squarepusher - Just a Souvenir (First listen to this artist. 50 different genres on a single album Shocked)
Rick Wakeman - Criminal Record (This record commited the crime of ruining my turntable's needle last year.)
Clearlight - Forever Blowing Bubbles (I should listen to Clearlight more often.)
Terpandre - Terpandre...

Phylter - Phylter (I never get tired of discovering obscure 70's Prog.)
Tangerine Dream - Shy People (... that cheap copy of "Shine On..." LOL)
Yes - Close to the Edge (I got myself an original LP, the bass sounds massive Big smile)

honestly, I have never heard of Point Blank, and did not recognize “Nicole” either... but a few clips do sound promising. I got a little bit of a Bloodrock vibe on the early stuff.

Wow, can't believe you didn't catch Nicole on your FM rock station '82 or so. Kinda like that Slade tune...it was on the radio every 20 minutes for a month or two, then gone.  I remember leaving my job at the mall and buying the 45 at the record store on the way home. Probably grabbed a slice of pizza on the way. I lived at the mall for a while. I believe there were three good record stores at the time, in the mall, along with an arcade, game and hobby stores, lots of cool stuff for teens. All of that stuff is gone now. Now, it's mostly cell phone kiosks and overpriced clothesLOL

yeah that is weird.. I definitely would have been tuned to the radio circa ‘82. On the bright side, I learned something today!

List con Commentarie:

Kevin Harrison | Inscrutably Obvious — Impulse vinyl purchase from the Superior Viaduct label (always quality), this is an obscure 1981 analog synth-based electronic record. Think late 70s Residents without the vocals.

Earth & Fire | Andromeda Girl — pure Europop (a la ABBA) but don’t hold that against it. Remember that ABBA had some pretty clever chord changes too.

BBC Symphony | 200 Motels Suites — a Youtube discovery, this has become a more frequent listen lately than 200 Motels itself. Just love the flow of the program.

White Noise | An Electric Storm — been a while. Much more riveting than I remember. Other that The United States of America, I don’t know of anything in the late 60s that sounds remotely like this.

The Turtles | Turtle Soup — their last. I was hoping for something a bit more progressive for 1969, but still typically solid Turtles

Sfinx | Zalmoxe — first listen to this late 70s Czech prog album (I think it’s Czech anyway). A Youtube digression took me there. Worth a listen. Quite surprising in spots.

Chicago | Chicago VI — I love Chicago but I always blew this one off. Big mistake. This one’s hot all the way through. Very commercial but in the best possible way. The cheese hadn’t quite set in yet. “What’s This World Comin’ To” is a total homage to Sly and the Family Stone! That was fun.

DQE | But Me, I Fell Down — local ATL band’s first album, kinda no-wave freak folk. I recently discovered that the folks in this band work at one of my local record stores I’ve been frequenting for years. Weird how I never made the connection!

Gazeuse! | Pet Anxieties — Weird, creepy stuff. Jazzy jam vamps with a moaning vocalist (also on keyboards) sing/speaking psychotic, manic depressive poetry. I got it long ago but it really hit me in the gut today.

R. Stevie Moore | World War Four — the godfather of home recording (hundreds of self-released albums since 1968), and I’m proud not only to call him an acquaintance, but I also contributed to a tribute album of his songs, and soon thereafter I learned of one of his disciples, Ariel Pink, who has since become my favorite artist (8 years and counting). I also donated some money for an R.Stevie Moore documentary that’s nearly done.

Weather Report | s/t — first listen. The next step after late 60s Miles. Nice.

Actually, no! I didn't buy a 45. It was a cassette of the album. Must have been just before switching to vinyl...I had quite a cassette collection for a spell.  I still have some downstairs in those little cassette cases.

Some interesting titles in your list there!Beer

It is certainly a very experimental album, perhaps influenced by the sounds of musique concrete and electronic works in the “classical” world, but using them to make songs in the rock and pop sense.

Moonwagon - Night Dust (I really have to delve more into Finnish Psych.)
Yukihiro Takahashi - Neuromantic
Reis da República - Fábulas
Dün - Eros
Weidorje - Weidorje (I much prefer these 70's Zheul/Avant albums. 35 minutes of intense music and no filler.)
Hostsonaten - Hostsonaten (First listen and there's a lot to process. I hope I'll get that 40+ minute epic someday Ermm)
Wishbone Ash - Argus
Sacri Monti - Sacri Monti (Second listen. I bought it after really enjoying their concert in 2016. The material is good but the production is terrible. Lots and lots of screeching guitars louder than everything else, you can barely hear the Hammond and the drums sound so tiny.)
