What albums did you listen to today?...continued

Tangerine Dream - Paradiso. Completed the first listen to the 3 Dante concept albums over 5 CDs but this was a struggle, getting very close to classical opera and in large doses and foreign languages too. Purgatorio immediately strikes me as the best but I’ve bought a Kindle prose translation of Dante’s book with the 19th century engravings to get the story behind the tunes.

honestly, I have never heard of Point Blank, and did not recognize “Nicole” either... but a few clips do sound promising. I got a little bit of a Bloodrock vibe on the early stuff.

Kevin Harrison | Inscrutably Obvious — Impulse vinyl purchase from the Superior Viaduct label (always quality), this is an obscure 1981 analog synth-based electronic record. Think late 70s Residents without the vocals.

Earth & Fire | Andromeda Girl — pure Europop (a la ABBA) but don’t hold that against it. Remember that ABBA had some pretty clever chord changes too.

BBC Symphony | 200 Motels Suites — a Youtube discovery, this has become a more frequent listen lately than 200 Motels itself. Just love the flow of the program.

White Noise | An Electric Storm — been a while. Much more riveting than I remember. Other that The United States of America, I don’t know of anything in the late 60s that sounds remotely like this.

The Turtles | Turtle Soup — their last. I was hoping for something a bit more progressive for 1969, but still typically solid Turtles

Sfinx | Zalmoxe — first listen to this late 70s Czech prog album (I think it’s Czech anyway). A Youtube digression took me there. Worth a listen. Quite surprising in spots.

Chicago | Chicago VI — I love Chicago but I always blew this one off. Big mistake. This one’s hot all the way through. Very commercial but in the best possible way. The cheese hadn’t quite set in yet. “What’s This World Comin’ To” is a total homage to Sly and the Family Stone! That was fun.

DQE | But Me, I Fell Down — local ATL band’s first album, kinda no-wave freak folk. I recently discovered that the folks in this band work at one of my local record stores I’ve been frequenting for years. Weird how I never made the connection!

Gazeuse! | Pet Anxieties — Weird, creepy stuff. Jazzy jam vamps with a moaning vocalist (also on keyboards) sing/speaking psychotic, manic depressive poetry. I got it long ago but it really hit me in the gut today.

R. Stevie Moore | World War Four — the godfather of home recording (hundreds of self-released albums since 1968), and I’m proud not only to call him an acquaintance, but I also contributed to a tribute album of his songs, and soon thereafter I learned of one of his disciples, Ariel Pink, who has since become my favorite artist (8 years and counting). I also donated some money for an R.Stevie Moore documentary that’s nearly done.

Weather Report | s/t — first listen. The next step after late 60s Miles. Nice.
