Nicholas - I would not mind at all having a MFSL copy of Songs From the Big Chair. Just a stunning album sonically and musically. I think it’s one of the first 10-20 albums I bought on CD. I’m due for an upgrade.

Bongwater | Double Bummer
United Waters | Sunburner
Bongwater | The Big Sell-Out
United Waters | The Narrows
Big Dipper | Supercluster: The Big Dipper Anthology

Steve, while I've never been a huge ELO fan, I'm really enjoying my review of all of them. Even the poppier stuff. I think with ELO and bands like Styx, rather than holding them to proggy standards, I like to embrace them for what they are. Good art rock bands with pop leanings.  For this reason, I really like the ones like Discovery and Cornerstone that are unapologetically accessible and catchy.

I just read that the dude on the back of the Discovery album is Robert, Raymond's brother from Everybody Loves Raymond LOL   Paying his dues lol

Stones - Tattoo You
Stones - Undercover
Stones - Dirty Work
Annea Lockwood - A SoundMap of the Danube

The Lockwood piece is just fascinating. Unlike typical environmental recordings with static mics, she continues moving locations for 1800 miles, capturing birds, church bells, human conversation, and of course lots of water of the Danube.

My Stones review continues to be one of the most fun reviews I've done. I expected to loathe the 80s stuff but i really don't. Oddly enjoyable. In fact, Tattoo is just killer classic rock right up there with Some Girls. Undercover was the biggest slog for me so far and may require more effort than it's worth.

Dirty Work was a first play and a shocker. There's an album I've never heard because the album cover always made me cringe, as bad at the Shaken n Stirred cover. But the guitars on Dirty Work as really bold, and Mick sounds almost possessed, as it he could front a metal band at times. Certainly the 80s stuff is more formulaic and produced and, if you like, forgetable, but i'm finding the Stones 80s output, so far, more fun/doable than, say, late period Billy Joel.

Re: Tattoo You - the song Heaven is gold. And I’ve always liked Harlem Shuffle from Dirty Work.
Black and Blue has a loose, jammy feel to it, but the cover photo is lame.

I like that cover although it works better on gatefold where you can see all of them.  Then there's the banned original cover...

Had a rough week (my car was totaled in an accident, though I was fine), but I had time for some listening.

Rolling Stones - Goats Head Soup: Very raunchy filthy guitar sound at times, especially "Dancing with Mr. D". I found this to be a really cool album, decadent and lowdown. Sure it has "Angie", but it somehow fits right in, and of course "Heartbreaker" is classic.

Lush - Gala: Proof that odd time signatures doesn't always mean "prog", "Thoughtforms" alternates between 3/4 and 9/4 and is just so catchy and brilliant. And man, the first three songs are so gorgeous. The band puts on quite a racket at the same time.

Loona Odd Eye Circle - Max & Match: Popped up on my Spotify recommendations thanks to my week-long Kpop charade a few months ago. This was one of the only ones I thought was interesting, so I revisited it. Yeah, I have to admit, I like this release...especially "Loonatic".

Tancred - Nightstand: Indie girl rock. If Snail Mail is the popular standard typical for the current scene, I prefer this artist and album. It's musically more adventurous and held my attention throughout. I can get behind this woman.

Tanaya Harper - Some Kinds: Starts out promising, as she does have a good voice, but soon enough it became a chore. An EP shouldn't have fillers, and this felt like most of the songs were. The last three songs just went by while I thought of how I missed my old wheels.

Stella Donnelly - Thrush Metal: The title was promising, but in the end it turned out to be another somewhat letdown. Her singing is sometimes flat on this, very "indie", and the swearing feels a bit forced at times, though otherwise I guess it's okay as background indie folk rock for ambiance purposes.

Faye Webster - s/t: This was pretty enjoyable. Lots of pedal-steel guitar gives the album a lot of twang to go along with the indie rock, plus she has a good voice and lots of attitude. If nothing else, it sounded different than the usual indie girl jive.

The Beatles - The Esher Demos: Got the White Album vinyl box set for Christmas, thus finally checked this whole thing out. It's basically folk versions of their stuff. Honestly, they just made me interested in hearing the superior regular versions.

It's weird, for a while now I've had little interest in listening to prog. Maybe some cog will start spinning in me again. Hell, maybe I should listen to that new Dream Theater album. I haven't listened to them since Octavarium.

Dave...glad you're okay man!  Sorry to hear about the wheels.

Goats Head is great isn't it? I was really surprised how much I'm enjoying this review of RS.

Sounds jarring, thank goodness you're alright -

Like everyone else, glad you are ok!  Totaled....dam*

Also, glad Goats Head is getting some love, I have always loved that LP.  Need to delve more into the RS catalog.

Today:
The Neal Morse Band - The Great Adventure
The Claypool Lennon Delirium - Monolith of Phobos (just discovered this band today...they are not listed here in PA.  I believe I will submit them to the site, sort of Pysch, fusion, progressive?  Anyone else hear of them?

Hey Michael...any idea what happened to John Mellotron Storm?
He's been missing in action for a while.

Hey Jim, hope you're well, mate. No idea about John Mello, I'm sorry to say. Although I'm probably not the best person to ask, as I haven't been around much for the last month. Just problems with my Dad back in hospital, the unbearably hot weather here in Melbourne and just general Archives fatigue that rears up once in a while.

From what I recall, it's not unusual for him to go through periods of tons of activity and momentum, then vanishes, then pops back up again. Sadly I'm not in touch with him away from the Archives either, so I can't check there.

I notice Jon comes and goes as he pleases. He should be fine, he’ll always be back, he can never leave

True enough, but he doesn't answer via email either, so I'd gotten a bit worried.

Sorry to hear about your dad, my friend. I do hope he will be okay.

I can't give you much sympathy on the heat though, I'm afraid, since we're buried under 80 feet of snow here and below zero temps.

Thank guys for the kind words concerning my car accident. The car's front just crumpled when it slid into the car in front of it, which had slid into the front of another car. Just a freak accident, no police report required and thankfully no one injured. My old Lexus was designed to crumple for safety purposes I guess. Still, a total loss, only compulsory insurance and I had put $2000 into fixing it just a couple months ago.
I was listening to "Star Star" off of Goats Head Soup at the time, which brings it to the unhallowed pairing with Skid Row's "18 and Life", which I was listening to back in 1990 when my car slid on ice into a telephone pole. Hearing either is tough without flashbacks of a banging noise and my car hood suddenly rising dramatically.

Only a few:

Tancred - Nightstand: Again. Nice stuff, been in the mood for this sort of thing lately.
The Who - Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy: One of my old LPs that didn't get sold for beer money once I became legal. I always thought Pinball Wizard and The Seeker stuck out like sore thumbs, especially the former, but hey, the whole album is filled with classic buggers.
Emma Ruth Rundle - Some Heavy Ocean: I used to think this was kind of dark, but not anymore. This album just takes me to a place I want to be when I put it on.
