I think I saw a quick mention in the Dolly thread of Audeze LCD-XC headphones. But yeah, would love to hear his impressions of it. That PFM was my first exposure into the RPI world and led me down the RPI rabbit hole which I have loved!

Jad’s great and all but I’d really like to hear this group on their own. Singer/guitarist Grace Braun has a great instinct for raw oldtime styles) Jad Fair | Greater Expectations (which, to my amusement when I bought it in ‘92, had a post-it note inside theCD booklet that had a handwritten note: “Help! MrJim! You are indeed correct, my friend. The XC's are ruling my sonic universe right now. i really couldn't be happier.  The XC's are completely laid back and very musical headphones .nothing strident or overbaringly analytical like my HD 800's . I am so happy to say that I can be more about the music and less analytical about the actual music recording itself . I can finally have a High end headphone that doesn't crush me or overload me with detail . My music never sounded warmer and I don't think I have ever been happier. Of course I listen with the XC's when I can get a moments chance, but my life is not what it used to me...have way way more responsibility and having a Newborn child is a ton of work....however so worth it!! Enjoy the music Jim . I definitely recommend you try the Xc's. You'll notice that they aren't a very deep headphone but for a closed back they have a very wide soundstage with killer bass extension .something planar magnetic headphones can only do .:) Oh and like you .RPI. Yeah .It was PFM for me .:)

Awesome...that beats the fortune cookie I got one time..."THEY WILL FIND YOU" Thanks to you guys, I went on a complete week-long binge of Billy Joel. Here's how it went down... Cold Spring Harbor: 1st listen. He sounds young, and bummed a lot. Some of it reminds me of McCartney's solo debut. Liked "Everybody Loves You Now" the most, although "Falling of the Rain" had some great piano melodies. It was just okay overall. Piano Man: 1st listen. The drab cover always turned me off, as I expected it to be mellow and mushy. I was wrong...I love this one! Hell, "Travellin' Prayer" reminded me of Nesmith's contributions to The Monkees (that's not an insult). Lots of really good songs, and it has the best closer for any of his albums. I'm going to buy this (despite that cover). Streetlife Serenade: 1st listen. "Streetlife Serenader" would have been great but his vocals sound so annoying on it. Yeesh. During "Root Beer Rag" I thought my player had switched to ELP's Works Vol 2. Funny enough, I like the two instrumentals the most on this, though "The Entertainer" is kind of fun if a bit forced. Turnstiles: 1st listen. Whoa...lots of biggies. Always wondered where that 'crazy piano song' was...it's "Prelude/Angry Young Man". That was great! A couple of duds like "James" and that awful reggae attempt song don't really ruin the album since there's some serious gems as well. The Stranger: Well, I've heard this one a million times for good reason. "Only the Good Die Young" is a personal fav, but man this thing is loaded with classics. I was never huge on "Just the Way You Are" though, like he heard "I'm Not in Love" and thought, "I wanna do that...with sax!" 52nd Street: I've always had a hard time getting into side 2, but I'm starting to warm up to it. Overall this continues the feel of The Stranger, finishing off that style with style. "Zanzibar" is another personal fav...love the jazzy break. Glass Houses: The one I grew up with. Channeling some Elvis Costello to keep up with the times, and it works! "Don't Ask me Why" is gorgeous, and unlike a lot of folk, I dig the hell out of "Closer to the Borderline". Pretty ace, except maybe that song with the French thrown in, too timid. Songs in the Attic: Pretty much an improvement on most of the originals, especially "Streetlife Serenader" and that early ballad "She's Got a Way" (the original was pretty cringe). Man, if you replaced a few of the lesser tracks with "Piano Man", "Angry Young Man" and "New York State of Mind", it would be monstrous...though not really "songs in the attic" anymore. The Nylon Curtain: 1st listen: WOW. This was the other big surprise besides Piano Man. Bitter, and I think Lennon's murder had an effect...he channels two eras of the guy ("Laura" is 1970-72, "Scandinavian Skies" is 1967), and they're cool! Hell, I enjoyed this whole thing. I'm buying this one too. An Innocent Man: Going for the 50's-early 60's flashback without covers. My mother loved this album, but I could never get into it, as doo-wop wasn't my thing, especially doo-wop through an 80's production. "Tell Her About It" doesbring a smile to my face for some reason and the title track kind of harkens back to the late 70's glory days, but that's about it for me. The next few had the misfortune of coming out after Greatest Hits Vol. 1 and 2, which seems like the only Joel album bought through much of the 90's until the internet made getting his whole discog a lot easier... The Bridge: 1st listen. Joel embraces the 80's and it swallows him up. I forgot about "Modern Woman", not a nostalgia trip I wanted to hear. Very much Miami Vice and Beverly Hills Cop style pop going on here (Ruthless People as well I suppose). There's some California Raisins R&B going on too. It's not a good album, but pretty funny. Storm Front: 1st listen. Stadium groin-swinging rock with big sterile drums. "We didn't Start the Fire" was like REM's "ITEOTWAWKI", but for the parents of REM fans. Corporate junk overall, though the ballad at the end was nice..they use to pipe that song in the party good store I worked in among other 80's ballads. Not proper music for that kind of place...no wonder it went out of business. River of Dreams: Probably a good idea he stopped after this, since a lot of the writing is like Storm Front with a less glossy, plastic production. His writing was stuck in the 80's. I'm sure I've heard the title track; sounds like something for a commercial or a Disney soundtrack in a way. Even Storm Front was better than this.

^ a fun overview! There’s a few more I’ll be buying as well. Agree with you 100% on The Nylon Curtain. Almost every track has something cool and different to offer. I remember when it came out, the radio chose “A Room of our Own” to play on the air, and I remember liking it a lot. Funny, as it’s one of the more obscure Billy Joel songs from that period.
“Laura” is one I discovered late. What a sharp edged song that is. Not just because he-sings the f-word either

Dave, really happy to see you enjoying the Billy Joel. I've always loved his mid-late 70s era, when he had the Stranger-era band behind him. If anyone is going to buy the Stranger, check out the 40th anniversary edition. It comes with a bonus live DVD from 78 I believe, a great show.

Yeah, this was a fun week of listening (except maybe Friday...those last two albums were a bit of a chore). He seems to have trilogies going on, the early first three (CSH to SS), the 3 NY albums (T to 52st), the three inspiration albums being new wave, Beatles and 50's rock (GH to AIM), and the three 80's stuff (TB to RoD). River of Dreams came out in the 90's but man it sounds 80's song-wise. I've seen others go with the first 4 being the early stuff, the late 70's being the big stuff, and everything else is the also-ran stuff, even though An Innocent Man was a monstrous smash with as many hits as The Stranger.

Wow. I played Innocent Man today for the first time since it came out, when I didn't like it. It's just awesome. I love it. Funny how time can altar one's taste, sometimes. I wish I could say the same for Nylon. I likes a couple of those, but it leaves me cold overall. I'll have to try it again sometime. The last track was the most moving to me.
