It was mostly a `background listen' at work, so I couldn't pay too close attention. It's still good, but I think the stronger stuff is in the first half. Will listen closer properly again soon.

Last night, didn’t mean it to be, but an all-Italian day!

After a bit of unnecessary genre tribal infighting elsewhere on the forum of late, I thought I'd step out of my comfort zone today.....

Magma - M.D.K.
Univers Zero - 1313
Amon Duul II - Tanz Der Lemminge
Can - Tago Mago

While I imagine I'm never going to be listening to a lot of RIO, Krautrock etc. in the near future, it was a refreshing experience still. I do quite like Can's groove, and have to say that Magma's sound is strangely hypnotic and very immersive (reminded me of Carmina Burana in places). All are challenging listens compared to my usual symphonic prog, neo-prog, cross-over prog preferences, but nice to know it's out there still. Let's be thankful prog offers so much choice and not get hung up on genres.

Finishing off with some albums I used to find challenging, but which I've warmed to considerably over recent months or years ... (it's all comparative, I suppose)

Gentle Giant - The Power and the Glory/In the Glass House
Jethro Tull - A Passion Play
VdGG - Pawn Hearts
Gryphon - Midnight Mushrumps (although this has been a favourite for a while now)

....we're all individuals.............I'm not

Lots of Gentle Giant talk all over the forums lately, Squonk and FZ!

Ha, it's a bit tragic, but with the exception of `Three Friends', I can never remember what particular pieces are on what Gentle Giant albums! I just know I love them all, so whenever I play one of their discs (with the exception of the above), I never know what tracks I'll discover! I'll be like `Oh, right, this one!'...and so on!

^Something to do with age? I have noticed I can´t remember the songs from the albums I have started listen after I become over 40 so good as before. Maybe also I listened earlier lesser albums and much more times.

In this instance I don't think it's to do with age, I'm only 41! I just never paid too much attention! I remember going through a phase where I ripped their first six or seven albums and put them in the car, and was swapping back and forth between them obviously without seeing the cover art, so maybe that's part of it!

Well, I am "only" 45. Somewhere I read our brains start to degenerate after 26 or 27, I believe it fully when thinking myself...

Goo was my dear first SY-album, Creedence was one of my first bands and Green River is just so great! Why just second side of that great McDonald/Giles album? I think I can´t ever listen that album only partly.
Good question. I have a playlist I use for exercise, and both “Flight of the Ibis” and “Is She Waiting” are on that playlist, so I hear those 2 songs a lot. So I just decided to skip side A (usually my preferred side) and play the relatively underappreciated Birdman suite instead.

Love the Minutemen and that early Merc Rev!
What Makes a Man Start Fires? is my favourite, but Double Nickels is also really great!
Pretty much everything they did is great. One of my all-time favorites. I think those 2 are most likely their best 2.

Letters to Cleo - Up!: Ever in the mood for some competent yet unremarkable power pop with cute female vocals? Me neither, but I checked this out anyways for some reason. It's not bad actually...the kind of stuff Josie and the Pussycats would jam on.

King Diamond - Voodoo: I've never given the King's 90's and later stuff much of a chance, as my tastes changed with the times. This was okay, but I wasn't sucked into the storyline like Abigail, and some of the songs went in and out of my ears. The song where he's going "You used to be so beautiful, but now you're gonna die!" is super catchy though. Fun and creepy to sing along to.

Tracy Bonham - The Burdens of Being Upright: One of the best of the mid-late 90's Lilith Faire gang, this album is very grungy, like STP style, but with angry girly vocals. Kind of sad how she and others were swept aside by the industry as they focused on meathead nu-metal bros. Storys like this make me glad the music labels have much less control these days over music in general.

Miami Sound Machine - Primitive Love: Most people have heard the hits, so lets focus on other things, like "Mucho Money!" Hexagon drums meet all kinds of percussive madness and horns to go along with the goofy "greed" lyrics. It's like Miami Vice meets Taco Bell, what could be better? There's also "Surrender Paradise", which could work as a commercial advertising any random Carribean island.

Genesis - Wind and Wuthering: I actually don't mind "Your Own Special Way", it's got that nice strumming waltzy lilt to it. Yeah the chorus is kinda cheeseball, but I'm not turned off by cheese all that easily these days. Anyways, "Blood on the Rooftops" is also on this, and I love that song. Prog ballad heaven.

The Monkees - Head: I always wanted to hear an album featuring Frank Zappa, Bela Lugosi and Teri Garr. Also, the last time I could say aloud "What is the purpose of the porpoise?" was while watching GnR's hilariously egocentric video for "Estranged". Can't really say it here since "The Porpoise Song" is quite trippy and cool. Man if Carole King dumped songs like this on Tapestry...
