SmileHow do you like it? It was first time to me, I think it was suprisingly good. Maybe not as great as those earlier albums, but really good when knowing it has made 30 years after their latest release.

Oooh, 13:13 is super cool in a weird sort of way. The music for "Suicide Ocean" is trippin', like the guitar melody during the chorus (overshadowing Lydia's atonal musings).

Voivod - War and Pain: Just got a really cool looking vinyl reissue of this (sold my original back in the late 80's for beer money...such a shame). Those looking for prog qualities won't find much here, but this thing cooks. Fast and thrashy with equal parts Slayer and Corrosion of Conformity, but with some bizarre guitar chord progressions already making their way into the band's sound.

Dimmu Borgir - Enthrone Darkness Triumphant: 18 years ago I was really into this album, so I snagged the dark green vinyl reissue (already worth 4 times the amount I paid for it). Thing is, this symphonic black metal stuff hasn't aged well for my tastes. Their best vocally and a few songs are cool, but overall I'm not sure why I was such a fan. Some songs are drawn out too much, and the keys can get goofy.

Ai Otsuka - Love Cook: Trying to branch out from Mika Nakashima in my J-queen listening. Ai was big in the 00's and composed her own stuff. Half of this is really good, especially the song about miso soup, but then she throws in sappy ballads that don't suit her cutesy voice. They sound like bland lullabies disrupting the fun rock-based stuff.

Ai Otsuka - Love Jam: The title and CD cover (or CD+DVD cover) provide the ultimate in innuendo. Songs like "Happy Days" and "Ponponpon" are terrific, like Shonen Knife on crack and Redbull, plus there's a couple of songs reminding me of old Pizzicato 5 stuff. But, like all of her other albums I'm finding, there'ssaccharine ballads that ruin the momentum (but sold well as singles). Incidentally, back in the days of these two albums, she was voted "most desirable for marriage" amongst college/university males in Japan.

As comeback albums go, it has a lot of class. It has the same restless spirit as the other albums, but doesn’t sound like a copy.
