Let's do top 5:
Kubrick Bergman Fellini Welles Chaplin
Not far behind are Luis Bunuel, Andrei Tarkovsky, Akira Kurosawa, Terrence Malick and David Lean.
Wes Anderson and Bela Tarr have been quickly hiking up my list lately.

Did you see "Noon Wine"? They just uploaded it on YouTube.. I can see why it's Sam's favorite. It's not long, but it's really well paced, with some fine writing and situations.

I will give a list with my favourite movie of each; film titles in the original language.
Fritz Lang ("M") François Truffaut ("Une belle fille comme moi") Jean-Luc Godard ("Week End") Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau ("Nosferatu") Alfred Hitchcock ("Frenzy" for the extreme black humor in it) Akira Kurosawa ("Rashomon") Billy Wilder ("Some Like it Hot"; best comedic movie ever) Frank Capra ("Arsenic and Old Lace") Werner Herzog ("Aguirre - Der Zorn Gottes") Volker Schlöndorff ("Die Blechtrommel") John Houston ("African Queen") Roman Polanski ("Repulsion") Alejandro Jodorowsky ("La montaña sagrada") Alain Resnais ("L'Année dernière à Marienbad") Eric Rohmer ("Les Nuits de la pleine lune") Federico Fellini ("La Dolce Vita") Pier Pablo Pasolini ("Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma") Claude Chabrol ("Le Boucher") John Cassavetes ("The Killing of a Chinese Bookie") Jane Campion ("The Piano") Ingmar Bergman ("Det sjunde inseglet") François Girod ("Le trio infernal") Luis Buñuel ("Le fantôme de la liberté")
I could extend this list endlessly.

Would you please extend your list whenever you get a chance? I love basically the same stuff and can't stop smiling in anticipation for some movies.. By the way, thanks for the Grace Slick "Dreams" mention - I liked the entire album. Speaking of Herzog, I love "Stroszek" so much. Easily my favorite of his.
